It should be noted that in the previous episodes, Alicent was the one defending Rhaenyra. She told her father Rhaenyra would make a good queen in their private discussion. She tried to push Viserys into reconciling with Rhaenyra, instead of trying to further the rift between them. She believed Rhaenyra and vouched for her when Viserys was going mad about the brothel ordeal. All that led to her father getting dismissed, leading her to feeling alone at court. And then she finds out that the person she was defending and trusting did in fact lie to her despite swearing on her mother's grave. And don't say "technically Rhaenyra didn't lie" because what she swore on her mother's grave was that Daemon "never touched her", and also the semantics wouldn't really matter in Alicent's perspective. Alicent may be acting awful as an adult, but Rhaenyra is pretty awful as well. Everyone's kind of an asshole now except Viserys maybe

My issue with the initial lie is Rhaenyra never outright says I'm still a maiden. She says something along the lines of "Daemon never laid a hand on me". I remember watching and thinking she was using very loop-hole speech patterns to technically tell the truth. Which is still lying through omission but Alicent was only grilling her about Daemon.

You missed the biggest thing.. JEALOUSY.. I am surprised you left this out.. Alicent is extremely jealous of Rhanerya.. Alicent's whole Ethos is Follow the rules.. hence her speech to Rhanerya about how Rhanerya never honored Duty or Sacrifice.. Look at it from Alicent POV ( I hate doing cause I hate Alicent). Alicent followed the rules and she was sold off into a marriage she didnt want with an old man who was literally decimating before her eyes who was still in love with his first wife. he never loved Alicent and never hid it, she was a nursmaid by day and his personal whore by night.. and she endured all of this over the course of what 16 or 17 years? Alicent never got a choice, not once in her whole life. THen she sees her step daughter and former BFF going to brothels, supposedly sexing her hot older uncle, and definitly sexing her hot knight and she gets away with it... she served moon tea and nothing more happens. She is still the princess and heiress to the IRON throne, she literally has her pick of ANY MAN in the Kingdom.. She marries a man who gives her leave to do whatever she wants with whomever she likes.. She has sex with another hot guy from a powerful family and has 3 kids.. and instead of her losing her life over it like a normal person.. EVERYONE covers for her.. the Velaryons, The King, and her lover.. Again Rhanreya is doing exactly as she pleases with no repercussions.. she is still heir to the Iron throne and now her illegitimate children are ahead of Alicent's and there is nothing she can do about it.. All while Rhanerya is doing all of this and seemingly having a good time, Alicent is having more kids and get called frequently to have sex with the Crypt Keeper... The Realms delight gets to do anything she likes to Alicent who has to follow the rules and it bothers her to the core.. Alicent stated the core of her venom to Rhanerya “What have I done, but what was expected of me?” she sobbed. “Forever upholding the kingdom, the family, the law, while you flout it all to do as you please. "Where is duty? Where is honor? Where is sacrifice? It’s trampled under your pretty foot again.”

couldn’t agree more. alicent situation is understanding, rhaenyra’s is as well. but it makes me sad & upset to see everyone hating on alicent for things that are out of her control. she’s playing the game to make sure her family survives the same as rhaenyra.

Alicent main reason for hating Rhaenyra started when she said on her mother's grave she is still a maiden basically after that Alicent has been a horrible judgmental stepmother to Rhaenyra. When Tyrion said what he said to Jon in horrible season 8 he was manipulating Jon because Daenerys loved Jon more than anyone and would've never killed him she want him to rule with her.

Basically she hates her for self righteous reasons. Imposing her faith on Rhae consistently then being pissed when she's not inclined.

Let's not forget that if the king had changed his mind and named aegon king Otto would have arranged for the princess to meet an accident. As well as all of her children. Bastards or not they still have Targarean blood and a claim to the throne through thier mother. I think alicent was jealous of the princess happiness and willingness to go after what she wanted, while alicent suffered in silence and wanted someone to praise her for it, or at least care. The king loved his daughter more than any of the children she had with him and that had to hurt as well. No alicent was just a jealous whiny pitiful "karen" who wants her sacrifice to be noticed and praised by someone.... anyone.

Everyone keeps saying alicent hates rhaenyra and ignore all those years she spent defending her. Someone saying she should hate her dad too since he is the one who made her marry Vesris. Then rhaenyra should hate and blame her father. He is the one who married his daughter's friend

I thought it was obvious that Alicent liked Criston when he came to see her and told on himself. Then she saves him from killing himself and makes him her bytch.

Sadly alicent reminds me of the holyier than thou women stereotype. Married earlier married as a virgin unhappy with her choices which were not much as she likely married who daddy picked. Bedded early has kids has kids nonstop assumes to do much perfectly. Frowns upon anyone who does not follow in her steps ether she is happy or unhappy with life choices and does not like difference and also deems you need to be here friend and take their advice when all of its seems aimed at bending or belittling your character.

I've seen by far the majority of people hating on Alicent unfairly. Sure, Alicent is firmly set against Rhaenyra at this point, but Rhaneyra drove her into that corner, as well as her father Otto. Alicent was Rhaenyra's most vocal supporter for years and Rhaenyra had no appreciation for it, she lied and had (on multiple occasions) forsaken her duty for personal satisfaction, which is something you just cannot do in such a position. She proved time and again she wouldn't be a responsible ruler.

Too bad it gets FAR WORSE for Rhaynera and her sons later in the books….. the good guys always lose horribly in the GoT universe

I think alicent is hating rhaenyra basically for nothing since her kids are no better. which makes the drama so unnecessary. dont get me wrong I LOVE the series but the reason behind alicents motivation wasnt really thought trhough. rhaenyras feeling and situation on the other hand are perfectly relatable.
