Great training facilities and academies, huge scouting networks with special connections to South America (specially Brazil) and Africa, high quality coaching, a mid level league... competitive enough to develop players but forgiving enough to give them room to grow and an amazing, hospitable country with great weather which eases the transition to a lot of young talent.

I think Portuguese league is better than Ligue 1 despite there are three teams (Red Eagle; benfica, blue dragon; Porto and Green lions; Sporting CP) to dominate the league

@@samuelyee4017 well, it's more competitive, but the problem here is that besides the three teams there is very little quality. We usually have Braga which are also a decent team, and sometimes one other team, but all the other teams are way bellow that level and nowhere near the level of most french teams... That's why Ligue 1 is still higher in ranking honestly

As a Portuguese person, I would just add that we absolutely thrive on being the underdog (in most major European competitions, at least). It drives us and gives us more passion/aggression to be better and win against the Goliath’s of the world.

The part where you mentioned how the Portuguese league produces a fraction the money of other top leagues, is a direct result of the fact that Portugal is a much smaller country with less consumers. But regardless football is absolutely massive in this small 10 million population nation, which still has them compete with France’s league despite the fact that France is a much bigger country producing much more money

The answer is rather simple: the portuguese league and Eredivisie are the best leagues outside the top 5, so, they are the "producer leagues" that generate the most revenue, and the ones with the best facilities and level of competition. Players that come from Portugal or the Netherland and already prepared for the big stage.

@@PrecisionCalc LOL, no. I'm a Porto fan and its not a particularly good league. Extremely anti-football behaviour at all times and one of the lowest effective playing times in the Europe at around 50%. The talent is arguably there but there is no money to invest and its a 2 club dichotomy to the title. People always talk about sporting as one of the big three but unfortunately they haven't really shown that winning 1 league title in 2 decades. Not exactly big three numbers. In fact, it's not even in the top 3 spot now.

I think the sets Portuguese players apart is just how technically proficient they are on the ball. You can have the best academies in the world but if you don't teach your plays well it means nothing.

The reasons are many but the biggest reason why Portugal surpasses all the other when it comes to creating talent, is culture, class and intelligence above all other nations. It's called football I.Q. Don't let the size of the country fool you. Remember what happened to Golliath!

Simple answer. Portuguese teams don't have the amount of money other countries have. So they have to work very good in the academy and have a really good scouting for them to secure great talent way before big clubs even look at the players

Funny that when showing Luis Diaz he greets another Portuguese League product (Vitória Guimarães and Sporting CP): Raphinha (Leeds Utd). He was actually transferred to Rennes so Sporting could keep Bruno Fernandes one more season and have his market value shoot up.

Liga Portugal generates just over 500 million euros in revenue per season, and the bigger 3 clubs, Benfica, Porto and Sporting, get the bigger cut on it. The difference between what those 3 get from the league and what the other clubs get is huge and that gap makes our league less competitive and fair, as the first club in the league gets like 40 or 50 million a year from the league, the last one get 1 or 2 mil. If the money got better redistributed then the league should be a lot more competitive than it is

Basically, its a cultural thing.Since childhood, portuguese kids are "pushed" to love and play football and parents and adults always support that.Its easier to have great young players when you have this kind of mentality (pity that here in pt the same doesnt apply to other sports)

Portuguese players are not better than British ones. But I see one major difference, I don't think Bernardo Silva would have made it past England's youth academies. There are plenty of Brits that have the same body as Bernardo Silva, but they never make it. British academies put a lot of emphasis on speed and strength almost from the beginning, Silva would look like shite in England's youth divisions against those kids of Caribbean descent. England like France puts a lot of emphasis on physicality, Portugal and Spain do not. Iberian coaches value different things. They know from experience that African players go through puberty earlier and excel in the youth system. See, the Portuguese and Spanish coaches make this calculation whether they know it or not. They look past the speed and strength. Luis Figo was small and skinny, almost didn't make it through the youth academies. They learned from this mistake.

And the important question, Portugueses clubs are owned by pay supporters fans, it's impossible an Arab, Russian or American came here and buy a club like Sporting, Benfica or Porto, no way. The president of the clubs is elected democratic by the supporters, impossible this in Primer League for example, where the president is always the owner.

Most sales come from portuguese players, not south american. This means that there is some kind of traits in the portuguese dna pool that is somewhat optimal for football. In fact Portuguese are not too tall for european standards on average (low center of gravity) and have a mix on both northen european, north african and mediterranean in them. Spain is similar. South america is mainly composed of this mix because it was colonised by Spain and Portugal. There is something about Iberians and Iberian descendants that make them best suited for the game. (This includes Ronaldo and Messi) 😊

That's not exactly how it works. The big clubs have networks of voluntary scouts all over the country, if they see a talented 8 year old it goes up the chain. This exists since the 80's, when the guy that discovered Ronaldo at Sporting sent a letter to all club members asking them to scout talented players, thus creating the first youth scouting network, instead of just waiting for players to show up at an open training session.

The problem with the portuguese league is that most people only support three clubs, making it very uncompetitive. Also it does not attract foreign money/arab oil like the french league. If Ronaldo returns to Sporting it will most likely explode with investment.

You Forget to say that BENFICA is considered on the Top 10 biggest european clubs of all time. And The kind of structure Benfica has. Its Impossible to match or to copy. Red Bull cant, neither any big oil company. Or some magnat trying to show of. Mounting an Youth academy, having the best scouts, the top facilities . Takes time at least 15 years to get proper results. No rich man or company are willing to spent time. So they spend The only thing they have...money

it doesn't. Jota is more of a wolves product, because a) he barely played in the portuguese league, b) he didn't play at atlético madrid. Luis Diaz is the only one that truly seems to be world class, the others are just good or average. Bad training grounds, huge debts, dodgy loans...

Yes he did play in the colombian league but he was completely unknown outside the colombia when he sign for Porto. His achievements at Porto that lead to signing by Liverpool.

@@rocky1169pt Of course, but his fundamentals were learnt on Colombia not portugal. I think that adding him to this video it's, at least, a bit dodgy. Plus I must add that he was'nt known on Europe but he was displaying a great level of football in the Copa Libertadores, at a club that was'nt all that good.

@@Kinnugan you could honestly say his fundamentals were not learnt on Colombia but by himself. He did not play in any professional team until the age of 18.

@@RandomGuy-vo1mu He was'nt formed in any academy but he was part of Colombia's indigenous national team, chosen by el pibe Valderrama. Plus from age 18 to 22 he played in Colombia's first division, so I think is fair to say that his fundamentals were learnt over there. I don't think Porto would have payed 7.2 million euros for a barely developed 22 year old.

@@Kinnugan I get what you mean. He did have some years of training in Colombia. I guess what i'm saying is that you must be extremely extremely talented to get into a side like Liverpool after only 6 years of professional football and only 2 years in Europe. He has the type of talent which would flourish no matter what country he was born in/played at.
