Fasting broke my food obsession. Now food is just food. Stopped craving junk food. Calms my brain. No trouble working out fasted. I do love it.

I agree and follow the same mindset.. I break my fast and consume high protein and fiber meals. Keeps me lean and mean. I eat now just for nutritional necessity. 18/6 weekend, 20/4 work days.

Same. Not intermittent fasting and not often but it really clears my head. Every time I start a fat loss phase, and occasionally throughout if I start feeling crave-y I’ll do a 24 hour fast and remind myself that being a little hungry for a little while just isn’t a big deal.

I use fasting to recalibrate. It resets my sense of taste and I don’t crave more “flavorful” foods. It also tips the balance of power from impulse to my mind. I have fasted for up to 9 days to prove my mind is stronger than my impulses.

Exercise and resistance training does more for autophagy even than fasting. So fasting isn't bad, but its not the exclusive route to achieving autophagy.

Also people dont really understand that our body not just boosts certain states from 0-100%. Autophagy is severely overrated and the whole idea of 16 hour fasting windows is based on a study with mice, which have a way faster metabolism than us. For real autophagy benefits you probably would have to fast several days...but this comes with other problems, so IF this is a healthy approach heavily depends on every persons own situation.

Depends on what you want out of it. If you want it more for detoxing and cellular regeneration than fasting is the best. If you want it more for muscle to replace fat that working out is the best. A big dummy would just find a way to balance the two.

It's funny because Thomas was one of the main reasons I started out my weight loss or health journey with a keto diet, even though I had skimmed through the RP audiobook at that time. Now, I've based my nutrition more around RP and find it way more sustainable, approachable, and so much less restrictive. Not to bash keto, it worked for me when I was severely overweight and not at all physically active. When I started adding training and exercise, though, I just could not stick to keto for any significant amount of time. I'll take my oats, fruit, and eat my cake, too.

Mikes explanation of MRV just hit me so hard. This is what I’ve been experiencing my entire 6 years of lifting and only realized it a year or two ago. I always had great leg genetics and hit them hard because I was good at it. For years my bench would always stagnate at beginner to intermediate while my squat and deadlift have worked up to elite levels. Now I literally have to stop doing legs besides very light/cardio level to move my upper body numbers. Such a light bulb

The section about MRV definitely hit home as someone who has tried many different powerlifting and hypertrophy programs. I see all these posts talking about low volume high intensity outputs being the best without ever factoring in specificity for strength sport application or bothering to differentiate between individual muscle types. This is why there is a huge difference between juiced up lifters and naturals, naturals generally do better with higher frequency and lower intensity simply due to the amount of damage incurred to the both the muscles and joints/ligaments. My squat max stalled for a long time and what pushed me through the plateau was switching to a squat centric program where I was squatting 3 times a week of varying intensity/volume and keeping the rest of my training volume reduced for a few months. My body adapted incredibly fast and actually reduced some of the other issues I was having by trying to cram too much volume into all areas.

If you are starting out unhealthy and prediabetic, fasting is a great way to set you straight and go with Thomas’s plan. If you are mostly healthy and just wanting to lose a little weight or put on muscle, go with dr mikes plan.

mike's plan will work for either scenario. all depends on what the person prefers, and finds to be the most sustainable for their lifestyle!

@@Chris90.eh I think fasting has much more positive effects on mental discipline which will lead to better results - there’s so much more than just calories and timing. But if less calories starts to fix an overeating situation then longer periods of not eating is clearly more beneficial for a time.

@@WideAwakeHuman true, the mental discipline developed through fasting can be great, but like with anything, there are still risks and potential downsides for some people. While fasting may work well for you and many others, Ive had many clients use fasting unsuccessfully. In fact, some end up developing binge eating behavior, and end up overconsuming caloreis leading to a worse situation then they started. The individual response and nuance is key for sure.

I would pretty much agree - as long as that discipline remains when it is time to eat! but we need to distinguish whether or not we are talking about prolonged fasting, or just a routine intermittent fast (which everyone does as most of it comes through sleep, and a lot of the times people aren't hungry after first waking in the morning) having a controlled eating window can be a much easier and intuitive way for people to induce a calorie deficit. as opposed to, tracking and entering their energy intake. which pretty much leads me back to how it all comes down to the individual preference

@@SM_RD exactly. everything is a u-shaped curve. fasting is no different. I literally touched on this aspect revolving around discipline in my previous comment; the discipline has to remain intact after you BREAK the fast, as well. but generally, the longer people go without eating, the harder it is to be disciplined when it's time to eat again
