The thing about onboard camera shots or when live race broadcasts go trackside->onboard->trackside is that when cutting to and from the onboard shot it is delayed. Major instances of this are 2018 Russian Grand Prix (Lewis overtaking vettel) and most recently 2021 Abu Dhabi grand prix (max verstappen overtaking Lewis on final lap) just two that come to mind for me.

If I understand the system correctly (I use Mylaps as a national race timekeeper), the transponder is continuously and very rapidly emitting its unique ID. As it passes over the two wires of the loop, the moment it is in the middle of the two wires is calculated by combining the trailing signal with the approaching signal. The system then figures out at what time the transponder was in the center. The loops are connected each to a 'decoder', which is the gateway to the network, and they are then linked to the main timing system, either over Cat5, Wifi, Fibre, etc. The decoders all have a local GPS antenna connected for a precision timing signal, which I assume is primarily for the high precision PPS feed that you get from the GPS network.

Are these loops used for DRS as well? I had assumed they'd have to be since you can only use them a) when enabled, b) in specific parts of the track and c) when you cross the detection point within 1sec of the car in front - that's a lot of variables to track in real time. Love the work and thanks for another great video

And then there's Maldonado's jumpstart in 2012 Belgium GP, that was so blatant, that it would of been penalized even without those transponders. At least the races weren't boring with that guy in there. /s

A bit of clarification here. The timing line is not like a photocell where if the line is crossed, the time is registered. There are actually 2 parallel wires with separate recievers. If the transponder passes over them, no matter how strong the transponder's signal is, there will be 2 separate signals shifted in time. The moment the 2 signal levels meet, there you have the accurate time of crossing the timing line.
@puma15289 ай бұрын

Imagine this is the timing beacons detection zone on the grid start: 0________________1 0 to 1 is it's range. What's stopping a driver parking right on the limit of 0 giving themselves a few inches at the start whilst being in range? And we all know that it’s the little things in F1 that translates into points.
@abigailcooling660410 ай бұрын
Perhaps it's because the driver can't see the floor directly in front of them very well - there's a tech talk video on the official F1 channel about this - which means that it might be tricky to accurately attempt to use this loophole. Also, the potential marginal gains might also be outweighed by the fact that penalties are given for not parking in a place where the transponder can detect the car.
@Jimmy_Moon10 ай бұрын
@@abigailcooling6604 Yeah, this season has had quite a few drivers complaining about visibility (all areas). I believe they have extended the yellow line on the grid to aid them lining up. Listen to this one: Going to be honest here, I’m not 100% sure on the details so I’m sure someone will amend the story. I’m not sure which season it was but teams had figured out that the starting lights emitted a tone/frequency which meant they knew when the lights would go green. Eventually, the FIA found out but said nothing. So at the next race they changed the tone/frequency but kept the old one. When it came to lights out, they delayed the green but triggered the old tone/frequency. This meant anyone who were cheating y using that tone set off before the greens and the FIA identified all the cheaters. If I remember correctly, it was 3/4 of the teams.
@TjarkVerhoeven9 ай бұрын
I dont think ít works as explained in the video; Yes, there would be a cone, but, more importantly, they can measure if the field (flux) is changing or stationary. Just like at the pitstop: time 'starts' when the transponder is stationary in the field, and stops when it moves. That's also how the exact time at the passing loops are calculated: when a transponder approaches a loop, it sends out it id multiple times, with the best amplitude (quite) right over the loop. With multiple measuremenst, you get a bell curve, with the highest amplitude corresponding with the center of the antennae loop.

So... if the transponder is also allowed to be in the A or B position, how do they do that in the grid boxes then? I guess they would need to have three of these coffee-filter detectors in each grid box to account for the different possible positions of the transponders? Or is it actually nonsense that this particular transponder is allowed in positions A and B, and are those just for the GPS and other transponders and is C really the only place this transponder is allowed to be be placed?
@mattamys10 ай бұрын
I believe C is the only realistic spot they can be placed, and the regulations show the positions for ALL transponders - and although I don’t know the exact details, I can imagine the FIA show the location of the beacon in the grid box as standard, so makes sense for teams to place them in the same spot!

Mini-sectors are usually formed of a timing loop every ~200 m. This is in addition to the timing loop at the end of each sector.
