That example was most instructive, and a reminder of the warning we always got, that the forward threat never excused the need for all around awareness. [The old techniques all included some pivots or rotations, in a grappling struggle, which would often turn the first assailant into the "rear ambush" zone, an accidental protection against tunnel vision. The rear grab, as well as normal elbow position, was a major reason why the high-rise, forward-raked thumb-break holster was so popular for so long. Before that, the low-slung, side-snap holster was worn to permit easy draw while wearing a uniform jacket, since the jacket leaves protected the weapon from view or easy taking. I never liked the straight-drop holster, the modern version of which encourages a push grab for drawing, hardly as fast as the sweep draw of the high-rise days, and which encourages anticipatory draw, a major contributor to the excessive erroneous force incidents in recent years. The trigger guard merged with the front strap of the grip seriously impedes one other rear-grab retention element of a few old revolver holster models, including the clamshell: the upper rear lip partially overrode the reverse surface of the trigger guard, allowing easy clearance during the forward draw, but snagging if a party attempted a snatch from the rear.] Your point is well taken, although it also alerts the potential assailant to that trick. Normally, such attackers get focused and grab directly for the pistol, which gives the owner a slight chance of deflecting.

This video is more about the risk of open carry than the holster. If you are engaged with an attacker and then another attacker sneaks up on you, not many holsters will help. Rather have a holster with active retention like a blackhawk than one without it..

You ever see those guys that know matter what happens or how they fall down they never spill their beer, that's because they have that beer in their hand everyday, multiple times a day when they stumble and/or fall down a lot because they're always drinking and walking around and messing around, so if a cop practices enough with his gun in very Which Way scenario possible it will be automatic reflex to have that secured in his hand as he falls!

If I'm not moving my gun side is pressed into a static object like a wall, turned away from anyone in the vicinity and/or my arm is resting on it. Whether I'm moving or not I keep my head on a swivel. Very few people have ever gotten within touching distance without me noticing them. That said I don't use this particular holster so 🤷♂️

Well your demonstrating this with a retention holster that you picked. If a criminal is having to grab the cops gun he doesn’t have one of his own let alone an assortment of holsters to understand how they work and where they release is. Retention holster shouldn’t replace situational awareness especially when open carrying but kinda a flawed demonstration. Redo with somebody who hasn’t used Blackhawk holsters and a target that is at least semi aware of his surroundings and that few seconds is enough to react.
