Hazel Goddesss My scalp does the same thing when I protective style. It takes a few weeks for my scalp get back to normal after I come out of a protective style using humam or synthetic hair. Protective styles also make my strands weak and break. I am glad to see that someone else is having these same issues with protective styling, because I thought I was doing something wrong.

Cynthia Mackey Yes....finally. I was starting to wonder if I was the only one who doesn't/can't do protective style. My scalp will be a hot itchy mess by the second day. I have to wash/wet my hair and scalp frequently and it has been this way even when I was relaxed. My hair is super short in the picture but I'm growing it out now and it's growing fine without protective styles.

Ever since I went natural, I cant keep a weave in lol my scalp goes nuts after a week because it got so used to my wash schedule. & I think people use protective styling as an excuse to never wear and embrace their real hair. Ever ask a chick why she never wear her real hair and she always says she's protective styling but its been like 3 years? (different hairstyles of course) lol...just my opinion from what i've seen personally. Being natural isn't as expensive and time managing if you get the right routine.

That's true. But for me, I do it because my hair is thick as hell. Being a girl with different genes from my mother and father, my hair is very unusual. It has frizz because of my father's genes, kinky because of my mom's genes but well defined. BUT, when I'm combing it out it is soooo hard to handle with. After I finish combing and try going through my hair with my fingers, the curls twirl back to normal again. Then I rage and just put everything up in a slicked back bun. Honestly I would LOVEE to wear my hair out but I can't risk the tangles it's too much for me.

The point is to keep it on ones head. Lol Not everyone likes to have their hair out all the time. I don't need to wear my hair out for the world to see all the time to enjoy it..knowing it's there, healthy and being able to do different pinup styles is enough for me. People have very different hair philosophies. Plus, there are times in your life when wearing your hair in certain ways is just not a priority.

I get confused about the word protective style nowadays. Apparently, My idea of protective style is twist, flat twist, conrows all done with my own hair. But nowadays i realize people refer to protective style as crochet, braids, weave and other things where you add a form of extension to. It probably works for people but i have a very sensitive scalp and adding extensions never worked for my scalp.

I agree. I really don’t think that a lot of the styles with added hair are healthy for the hair. Between the friction and inevitable dryness, it seems like a recipe for breakage. I also think it’s important to learn how to care for and style your own hair. Mastering 2-3 go-to styles is liberating.

My hair could be down to my knees and I would still protective style. I think a lot people just protective style to get away from doing their own hair and to change up their look. As someone with superrrrrr dense, medium length type 4 hair, it takes A LOT of manipulation for my hair to get into any kind of style other than twist/braid outs. Buns are nonexistent with my hair density (tried every hack) and I don't care for updos or those silly mini buns, so I just be rocking my favorite bomb ass, huge fluffy braid out day after day. But I get tired of it after a while, so I get braids. I don't protective style for hair growth, I do it to get a break from styling my hair and because I love the way I look in braids. Box braids and a braid out are my two favorite hair styles. Nice discussion.

From my perspective....Not all protective styles are beneficial to your hair. Braids and crochet styles often cause unnecessary breakage, even though it may grow in length. Wigs are usually the only thing that work for me, because during the winter months I like to conceal it due to the harsh climate. Also, I simply like to switch my look! I don't do weaves.... Bottom line is learn YOUR hair and find what works for YOU....every natural girl has her own beauty😍so embrace it!!! 😊 #KeepThemEdgesInTact

Throughout the week I twist my real hair as a protective hairstyle and then wear a twist out. I've found that wearing my twists into a low bun for a few days has help my hair tremendously. I guess everyone just has to find a regimen that works for their hair. I do agree that some protective hairstyles aren't really necessary for hair growth. Some protective hairstyles can be more damaging to your real hair if you're not taking care of your hair underneath.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I just don't see the point, if God wanted my hair in braids 24/7 I would have been born that way I like my hair texture and wear it out as much as possible. Most protective styles irritate me anyway so I end up mjnipulating my hair more often than I would if I would just allow my hair to grow naturally. It helps that I don't mind having shorter hair even though my hair is shoulder length which is average for my family.

You have beautiful hair! I'm transitioning and I was doing the protective styles but they are itchy and heavy. I tried wigs and braids, twists and faux locs and they all itch. My hair grew in those styles but I just want to give it a break and let it breathe from the protective styles. You are right you don't necessarily need protective styles to grow your hair out. I'm not able to properly keep up my regimen of treatments when its in a protective style. I'm 10 months post and my hair is growing fast. I plan to transition for at least 18 months and then cut the rest of the relaxed hair off. I feel its about embracing your natural texture not keeping it covered up all the time. I have to let go of thinking I have to look a certain way to be beautiful. I've been relaxed since I was 15 and I don't remember what my natural curls look like so this is a big step for me.

Before I even watch protective styles are not just braids and things I have been watching your channel for a while and the way that you style your hair and how long you wear that style is a protective style. If you can wear a twistout for a week or longer than that's a protective style because your not doing much manipulation to your hair

Protective styles don't need to have your hair covered. Braids are low manipulation styling which are very convenient and help with length retention. If those braids are worn in an undo with the hair ends tucked in, that's a protective style. For instance, two cornrows put in a bun, some braids worn in a bun, a French tuck, bantu knots, chignon etc. The only covering my head gets is a hat on the coldest winter days for a few hours. It has always been my lifestyle getting my head wet every bath/shower time plus using a tiny bit of oil as a sealer. My hair grew to BSL without me using any protective style. Then it stuck there from childhood to adulthood. That's because my hair was rubbing on my back. It got caught in collars, bag straps etc. The ends had been always breaking off. It became practical to wear updos plus I worked out that it's time to start conditioning my hair once a week. That and only styling once or twice a week. My hair got longer. I've notice that the longer it gets the more practical it becomes to use updos. It's no fun getting hair draping your face as your brush your teeth then getting toothpaste in it as you spit. Hair can also get caught in the zip of my jackets. I save hair out for weekends and special occasions. I love doing braids and updos which is why I haven't opted for drastic hair cut. It's past waist now.

Totally agree with you! And clearly you haven't had a problem with growth! I look at twist outs as mini protective styles because you're only manipulating your hair really about once per week. There's no daily heat, brushing/combing.

I think almost all athletes protective style because of time management and the weather. I run track, so protective styling is beneficial for me because we run in all types of weather and no one feels like doing their hair everyday lol. I still wear my natural hair out just the same as I protective style, except that when it is the colder and more rainy seasons(like now lol), it stays protected since I am running outside more often.

My experience has been the same! I used to do braids occasionally when relaxed to get past awkward stages but didn't like it then. The most I've lasted is 2 weeks in a protective style since being natural. I think a wash and go can be a "protective style" for me. The key is take care of your hair, like you said to know your hair. Then you know what to do to protect it. Loved the video.

Ahhhh another video that expresses a view that I have on protective styling. I never put weaves amd such in my hair or braids but I did do a test run on my real hair to see how I would like braids or twist because they look fun but I cannot keep it in for a day. Imagine paying all that money for a style I will take out the next day so I was like that's one thing I will never get. I personally do not care for it or deem it necessary since my hair is doing just fine. If others like it then absolutely go ahead its your hair but I hate it for me.

From a person who loves to switch looks, I had to train myself to protective style. Coloring, weaving and wearing fros all the time killed my hair. Always was stuck an inch below shoulder length. For a year now I've been keeping my hair in single braids under wigs and hats and I refresh them every 1-2 months. Not manipulating and leaving my type 4 hair alone allowed me to finally see some real growth.

My hair is high maintenance, So PS for a while has helped me so far . I've been doing it for months and I am already seeing a drastic difference. I take down my style every month for deep treatments, and do only sew ins so I can use my oil mixture on my scalp and spray it with leave in every other day. PS keeps me and my hair happy while I wait for it to grow.

I haven't had a protective style like braids or weave, or anything since then. My hair has been out in buns and cornrows, and ponytails, I'd love to get box braids, but my edges pick out and I just never knew how to take care of my hair. I think the keep isn't so much as protective styling but making sure your hair is moisturized. I feel like since my hair has really been moisturized, washed weekly with a regimen, my hair has not only been growing but maintaining the growth which is very important to me.

I braid or twist my hair at night, wore a wig once in the 70's when most of my hair fell out from a relaxer but other than that I wear my natural hair out, can only wear twist or braids 3-4 days.

I don't protectective style my hair. I never really liked protective styles but I knew that was a sure way to retain length recently I found out that my hair can retain length without protective styles and Im sooo happy because I get to enjoy my hair.

Love your hair color. Super cute!! Have you tried protective styling with your natural hair? For like 4 days? Twist, corn-rows? I do twist about 4 days and then redo it; and I do oil my scalp. It is less itchy for me. As long as you are doing low manipulation than your hair will grow. Low manipulation is more important for hair growth in my opinion.

I'm the same exact way, I always try protective styles but one week later and I'm over it and end up taking it out to switch it up and free my scalp. My scalp also gets really itchy when I do protective styles, it's so weird. I'm gonna keep trying different protective styles, not giving up on em yet, cause my hair is so damaged! And your hair growth is amazing! 😍👏

Protective styling seemed to be damaging my hair. I will braid it and take it down every 3 days and wear it in a braid out and moisturize and braid it back again. Then I wash it every 2 weeks. I can't wear braids with fake hair anymore. I tried and my scalp was on fire and is so use to being washed every other week that I was scratching like crazy. I just wear my own hair. I use to love mini twist but can only do them sometimes. They also started to break my hair off. Every time I do a protective style I lose a boat load of hair when I wash it. So I gave up on it also and my hair seems to be doing just fine.

My scalp goes nuts when I wear weave. Told myself I’m done with sew-ins. But box braids are my go too for the winter. Less breakage with a proper wash and condition before hand.

I feel you. I tried crochet braids and after 2 weeks I took thise jokers out. My scalp was so sore and it felt like it took a deep breath when the air hit my scalp. It gets very humid and hot in Virginia in the summer and I will get 2 big goddess braids in a bun but 2 weeks is the max for me and no more crochet!

I've always loved to get braids when I didn't want to do anything to my hair then when I became natural I at least get braids once a year. I love it because it saves money from buying products for a while lol and when I'm lazy and don't wanna deal with my hair for a couple of months. 💕

I don't protective style either. I had box braids about 3 years ago and that was it. I think the real key to long, healthy hair is making sure you hair is well moisturized.

My mom insists I NEED to protective style but I don't want to anymore I miss my hair so much & I barely know it & I've been natural for about 5 years! Braids also ruined my edges & I knew it would because my hairdresser was pulling too much!

After I do a protective style such as braids, and take my hair down to wash it, my hair tangles more and it takes awhile to get back to it's natural normal state. Still learning my hair and the natural hair process.

Everything you said in this video I relate to. I've had a weave before and after 2 weeks I washed it and then another two weeks later I washed it again because I didn't want itchy scalp snd dryness. When I had box braids I also washed those and I kept both styles in for only a month even though they still looked nice enough to keep in longer, but I just feel better with my hair out and free

I have to finger detangle and moisturizer every two days. Otherwise, I've got a knotted mess. Long term protective styles are a no no for hair that knots easily. I like versatility and showing off my crowning glory. I just have to remember not to over manipulate my hair. I feel what you are saying. :)

when i first big chopped a year ago i would always protective style because i was so insecure about the length and texture of my hair and i would only do full head weaves. It made my hair grow so fast and i wore it until i got comfortable with the length but now that I'm comfortable with the length and texture, i can't get weaves because it makes my hair so dry and brittle now. so i agree

I grew my hair almost waist length with wigs. I made most of them myself and loved switching up my style, but got tired of feeling like I was wearing a hat all the time LOL. Went back to sew ins,but my scalp has suffered from all the tight braiding :-( I wash and DC once a week and wear a twist out. Had to cut my hair from damage done by me detangling and braiding my hair each night (I was wayyy too rough, plus everynight is excessive for my 4c hair, so now just twist out once a week and DC to strengthen/keep moisturized) ...I just hope to retain my length like I could with wigs this time around

I completely agree. Ever since I stopped toying with my hair a lot it barely itches and my scalp doesn't dry. I just spray it w/ oil, conditioner, and water mixed, twist it up, and throw a wig on. My hair is flourishing.

love the eyebrows, as for protective styles some ppl honestly just hate their hair. I dunno about protective styling, i just get braids or twist coz they look cute especially when i opt for the unconventional colors like purple or blue highlights.

OMG, I totally agree with you. I've only been natural for a year & a half and I have never protective styled. My scalp loves being washed every 2-3 days. If not, it itches so bad no matter what I put on it. I think most see retaining length or saying that their hair grows while in protective styles are only saying it because they don't see their hair everyday. For a while, I didn't think my hair was growing until I went back through my pics (I take a daily pic of myself) and I could see the growth. So maybe they should do a daily hair picture and they will see the growth without constantly being in a protective style.
