Why I left the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) as a new grad registered nurse.
Many of you who follow me on my Instagram may remember that I shared on my stories a couple of months ago about leaving the NICU which resulted in an influx of DMs asking me about it. I decided to create a Q&A at the time to answer some of the most common questions. However, leaving the NICU was a very difficult decision for me to make and I was having a hard time sharing this vulnerable part of my life with the public. I was navigating feelings of “failure” as a nurse and questioning if I was cut out to be a nurse to begin with. Since then, I have fortunately been able to move forward, and I am now in a much better place that fits my needs. I finally felt ready to share about this with you and I have answered some of the most common questions that I had saved from the Q&A.
Stay tuned for my guide titled: How To Land A Job in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit!
Also, for all my nursing students who are about to take the New Generation NCLEX this year, watch my most recent video where I share what to expect and how to study for it!

Well, I've taken the exams for the 2nd time now and still didn't succeed, i wonder how those who succeeded did it. 😭💔

Just say "I haven't passed yet." Don't take it as a failure but see it as a learning opportunity. There is a lot of power in "Yet"; you are telling yourself that you will get there and that your eyes and heart are still fixed on your goal.

As a RN (registered nurse) I'm not afraid of loosing my job or quitting my job because I learnt how to save to invest putting my money back to work to make more money. I'm not just after the money but the freedom to live on my terms

I may start in the NICU in the next month or so as a volunteer. I will be a senior citizen volunteer working with the kiddos. Many of the babies were born from mothers who abused drugs and alcohol. We care for these babies by holding them and caring for their basic needs. Currently, I am a volunteer at my local VA Hospital. I help out in many different areas within the VA Hospital. I am a retired soldier and have 4,000+ hours of spending time with my fellow veterans. Speaking of nights, the NICU wants me on duty at night. Aren't the babies sleeping? My work with the VA Hospital will be on the weekends.

It takes 12-18 months to begin feeling competent as a nurse. Experienced NICU nurses (at least on my unit) are always a resource person for the newer nurses. If you are uncertain about anything, ask an experienced nurse. We would rather you ask a million questions than have you afraid to look stupid for asking too many questions and harm your baby. We hire almost exclusively new grad nurses on our unit, so we always have several new nurses on the unit.

Thank you for your message! I agree with everything that you said! I was lucky that all of my preceptors encouraged me to ask questions and always helped me whenever it was needed. If possible, do you mind sharing what hospital you are currently working in that hires new grad nurses? I’m sure several students or new grads watching would love to know!

Agreed! Night shift is not for everyone. I definitely saw a difference in my physical and mental health once I switched back to day shift. I don’t think I can ever work nights!
