Why do people talk about corporate jobs as if they're all Google? Reality is most Americans work over 40 hours at a place with stale air, fluorescent lighting everywhere, no snack bar, and bare minimum benefits. Most people will plateau in their career by age 30. After that learning new skills becomes a thing of the past, no one is interested in mentoring you, and you'll be stuck with your 3% raise a year until you retire. You can go find a "better" job but it will quickly look just as demotivating as the last. Nothing against her personally. She sounds like me when I first started my career. But the glitter fades away VERY quickly. You'll lose any interest in furthering your career after a few years and the only thing you'll care about is paying the mortgage and putting food on the table. I think the number one solution is to change the mindset of the worker. Workers need to feel empowered to respect their own lives. Work from home is the greatest innovation the American worker has ever had. People have suddenly started to realize they have basic human rights and now they're sticking up for themselves.

As a child of immigrants, I know exactly where she is coming from. These are ideas our parents often indoctrinate us with from a young age. In general, our parents grew up in more volatile circumstances and think the US is a safe haven in comparison. Due to this, they, unfortunately, push this idea of "safe and stable jobs" when in reality, nothing is guaranteed in life. Stability is a farce no matter where you live, and you need to be prepared for shit to hit the fan regardless of your degree, job, work experience, etc. The reason I know this is because my parents survived a war and saw doctors (the most "stable" job) lose everything.

I like my remote Job, its not necessarily 9-5. I can start at 8 or 10am and work till 4 or 6 pm depending on meetings or none. I can work after dinner if there's crunch time for something and also take a 2 hour lunch break on slow days. It's the flexibility and no set hours that are nice for me personally.

From UK here, I find it very strange in the US how health insurance has to be provided by the employer, as an individual you need to buy your own car insurance, home insurance, and every other insurance. But the most important one is provided by someone who can bully you into working ridiculous hours and making your life miserable under threat of removing insurance?

I learned my lesson with so called "Job Stability" 2 months ago. Literally brought someone else in to replace me, I trained the person and they were plotting this behind my back since January. It SUCKS but hey it's a lesson learned.

There are lots of positives about 9-5 jobs: relative security, structure, potential for mentorship; the problem is when they try to take over your entire life.

She has a few good points but the longer you stay in the corporate machine, the glam and shine wears off. This does sound like someone fresh in the industry who hasn't suffered being in multiple rounds of layoffs, actually been laid off, been in dead end jobs, reskilled themselves and NOW has a decent career. My purpose now is to sharpen my skillset then eventually move onto the next. I have no company loyalty, that went out the window in my late 20s. This is a business contract that can be terminated at anytime by both parties. Do not forget that. Eventually, I think I'll pursue running my own company but there's a few goals I need to accomplish before doing so. First is finding that niche in an industry. Second is having the skillset and experience to solve those problems. Third is bringing on people that can fill in the gaps I do not have. Fourth is business acumen to promote my business to bring in more clientele.

Jobs being stable is a myth but so is a business being stable. I think it all comes down to demand.

ah yes, I too remember my honeymoon corporate job period when I thought I could climb the corporate ladder and be rewarded for working hard and keeping my head down. In reality your reward for hard work is just more work and noone will go out of their way to reward and recognize you. You are on your own.

It's stable salary when you haven't experienced the rug pulled out from under you. In the end, you have to watch out for yourself and your future. Don't place your future in a single employer's hands. Pretty much the message Joshua is trying to get across in most videos. You like your job, that's great, but be mindful that a company will always prioritize what is best for the business, so have a back-up plan.

I didn't like 9-5 in a corporate office at all. I like project management and working my own way and I'm in a consulting start up atm three days remote, I hope to get enough experience to work a contractor so I can choose when I come into offices and work 6 months on, 6 months off. I owe a lot to you Josh for giving me the tools to put into motion a plan to get the life I actually want to live. :) Peace and lovee

The corporate ladder is very stable. But it is standing on a rug they can pull out from under you whenever they want.

It's funny to me that the pain that people experience that they work under someone is less painful than being independent, people so much do not trust themselves that the pain of getting things done on their own is more painful than working under people and accepting conditions of society.

I’m an American living in Sweden and sometimes I miss the states but these are videos really make me appreciate Sweden. We have unlimited sick days 5 weeks paid vacation 240 days per parent paid parental leave that is not allowed to be refused by the employer. You are protected by law and it is illegal to fire someone for using parental leave. You can more or less choose to work overtime or not. You are not obligated to work overtime. My pay isn’t that high compared to US salaries but after paying all my bills including food for the month I have about 600 - 1000 usd I can use for whatever.

Mentorship is often lacking in corporations nowadays because the older generations are both reluctant and bad at passing on knowledge and then they retire. After all if they mentor you they risk you becoming better than them at their craft or at whatever they are best known for and they want to take that "achievement" with them out the door. Knowledge transfer is a huge problem across many industries.

She's young and it sounds like it's her first or second corporate job she received. The burn out is real and you won't want to get out of bed reminded to work on Mondays... Wait until she gets older as most companies don't want to hire older people because they know how expensive you are (kids, mortgage, health insurance) that companies don't want to pay. Thus, companies knowing your age range and the type of lifestyle you will probably live by and they would rather hire someone out of college with low starting pay, and probably knowing you're single with no kids. I've been at startups companies to big corporations. I've heard hiring managers say things like, "you're over qualified for the position" from job interviews and follow up with no second interview. They would rather select the other candidate because they know you're really expensive to pay. It will bite her back once she gets older by someone else younger than her.

Lol as an engineer. Working from home is a blessing. Typically, I get my work done in less than 20 hours per week and still get my pay. Some weeks are longer than 40hrs but man, the vast majority of them I am not putting in a full 40. If I can keep a 9 to 5 like this all my life, I would not complain!

I find it hard to believe someone can be so obsessed with corporate culture, i mean, literally, nowadays, there is so much shit to do and so many hobbies to explore, so many places to see, why should your 9-5 entry level job be your whole world?

As to retirement - to me "retirement" means I can meet my basic needs (housing, food, etc) and can afford to work on things I really WANT to work on. Retirement does not equal idleness. If I need or want some additional money, I can pick up a shorter term gig or two.

I had emergency surgery years ago. My "benefits" billed me $15K.

I have found that working in the corporate world over 20 years has lead me to be less confidence in venturing out on my own and taking more chances. The older you get as you work in the corporate world you start looking at risks to your pension and other benefits if you leave or lose your job. The world of corporations lulls employees into a false sense of security and then when layoffs start to happen they cause stress. Yes some people love that world but from the start take control of their journey. From my experience there aren't many like that in the entry level end. If the person hasn't moved on in 5 years, they will find it hard to move on after that. That would be my recommendation. If you work in a corporation, take control of your journey from day one. Don't ever start to relax and feel that you are secure. I've seen it happen too often. I will say that some companies are really good with their employees but it all depends on the leaders. You can have it good one day and they can take the benefits away the next day.

Never really interacted with my dad since he always had the 9-5 with 1.5 hour commutes (one way). He finally quit, but that lifestyle creep already set in with the rest of the family. Whenever I see posted family photos of them in restaurants/movies, he always looks sad and unhappy knowing he has to pay for everything.

Man, American Work culture is so weird from a german point of view. We have health Care for everyone and 30 days of vacation per year is more or less the norm...

Went from working (software engineering) in an office making $115k to now now making $300k working from my apartment doing 2 contracts. Could care less about being around people and their bs culture. It’s all been about “celebrating ______”... whatever grievance group gets their month... at home I don’t have to put up with this crap.

This applies to a lot of people on social media. They are always trying to put out the illusion that their life is amazing and they are happy.

A lot of corporations love hiring new college grads for this reason. Young and naive. I'm also the child of immigrants so I had no one to tell me otherwise. But I'm naturally skeptical so I've never fully drank the kool-aid at any job. I just go for the perks. No loyalty to them. I try to mentor my 20-something colleagues.

I am actually a "Non Exempt" salary employee. I get my guaranteed weekly salary plus 1.5 the hourly rate if I work over 40. Pretty sweet. So that really helps, but also too many hours can suck.

Josh I think you were a little harsh on the "stable salary" part. 9-5s are stable compared to freelancing and hustling, which can fluctuate. Building a baseline of wealth before moving on to self-employment is a really common route that works well for a lot of people. It is possible but hard to go straight from school to self employment with $0 to your name.

Her video shows how bad a 9-5 really is. The 9-5 is not only controlling your time but also your thoughts. She has to convince herself that a 9-5 is good because she has no other option. I doubt she would say the same thing if she was in a wealthy family or married to a wealthy spouse

No diss, but she sounds young & "bright eyed". When I graduated I was so excited about health insurance, "endless" opportunities & working however long: 50-55 hrs a week as a salaried employee. Now?! I got a 100% remote job, don't care about titles, and just want the $ to pay the bills, insurance, food, etc. for as long as i'm employed. Sorry sweetheart, but there's no such thing as a stable job. Nothing wrong with working a 9-5, the issue IMO comes when people are comfortable with working a 9-5 for their entire lives & retire with their 401k. Work a 9-5, take better opportunities for more money when possible & start investing in other forms of income. Buy a few rental properties, open a self-directed IRA, diversify your investment portfolio & start planning an exit strategy from a 9-5 lifestyle.

The only "security" you got in life is death. Grim but that's the reality.The rest is a matter of adapting and trying to get the best of the particular situation.

I have had a few corporate jobs and a couple I did actually like- and for different reasons- but it only took one for me to not want to be in the labor force anymore

The value she talks about being part of corporate can be found in any summer job you’ve done in high school or college. There’s really nothing a job teaches you apart from this. Besides this, I see no benefits other than money. While you need money, these jobs sap your life to the point where you can’t enjoy your money. Most of these people who “love” corporate and their jobs always want to retire early. I wonder why.

In most places in the US they won't teach you anything, it depends on you.

Wtf? I left college feeling like an entirely different person. The methods, and best-practices they transferred into my brain have operated on auto-pilot ever since. The difference between a degree in management, and one in molecular biology is obviously even greater than I thought. Then she started listing her reasons, and it was like looking into the abyss. I actually like my 9 to 5, but it’s pretty much solely because my manager actually seeks employees opinions before making huge changes, advocates for pay raises for us when he believes we deserve it and actually tries really hard to get employees that are falling behind to get back I track in. The only reason he still had his job is that our branch continues to bring in the highest profit out of all other departments and on average we work the least. It shows that if you treat your employees like they are worth the work they put in they will try harder. When employees know they can get rewarded for going above and beyond sometimes they will.

I want to retire early, but retirement for me will be switching from working in tech to being in real estate and investing in my stock portfolio. I already live extremely minimal, so hopefully, I can achieve this in the next 10 years.

A 9 to 5 job is good! It's when they ask you to stay after 5, that things start going downhill.

there was a guy that was working where I worked for 15 years and the boss fired him...together with two more people for not the same reason. Boss was actually downsizing and he let go a bunch of people. My colleague was fired one day before his summer vacations would start.

Some of her motivation comes through in her worries about retiring on a fixed income. I read that as: She wants to quit as soon as possible and probably never picking up what she does (or any other occupation) ever again. I mean, that's not abnormal. But it also tells me that she's not really into what she does. I don't blame her. Quite a bit of Office Space make-work out there, and a lot of the corporate tightening of screws over the years could make most anything unenjoyable, whether it's one's passion or something benign.

I think it depends. Being in a low stake job that also gives u opportunities to try things and experiment. There are things that u have to be on the ground to develop. As long as u feel that u are adding to your value as employer with some reasonable boundaries u are ok.

I'm glad you made that channel, more than making me laugh, it explains all the BS I've experienced as an employee. I been only working two years for two different customer support companies but the amount of nonsense I been through was through the roof.

I think you're both partly right. There's no such thing as a completely risk-free situation, but having a job provides a *relatively* stable income, which will pay the bills and hopefully let you build up some savings. But there's absolutely no reason not to also have a part-time business and/or some investments outside the job, as long as one doesn't interfere with the other. If your part-time hustle develops into something that can make you a full-time living, great. If not, you've still got the job to support you. This is probably the optimum course of action for a lot of people.

About the sleep pod. It actually depends, I know someone who rented a relatively cheap shared room and only use it to sleep on weekends. She usually sleeps in the office because of the free AC and only goes back to take a bath before starting her office work.
