Made it for 6 months, knew it wasn’t for me on my first day of training on OJT. My training officer thought it would be funny to leave me alone with the full section while he left for 25-30 minutes. Problem is I know absolutely nothing about the unit. We had it out when he returned. They will hire ANYBODY, they hired a 74 y.o guy with my class. The worst thing for me was my co-workers, a couple were most definitely sociopaths! I was more nervous around them then my prisoners. Props to you long time C.Os, you have my respect!

Gonna make 3 years in November, I have no regrets when it comes to the financial freedom the career offers. I used to make 35k a year at my old job and my first year of corrections I made 77k, last year I made 89k. The hardest part about the job is the amount of FORCED overtime you get. My first year I worked 80hrs a week for nearly the entire year. The stress it puts on your family is crazy BUT if you and your significant other can keep a strong communication then it can work. The harder a life you had growing up the easier the career will be. It’s not meant for everyone and that’s fine. Corrections at times requires the highest level of communication, it can be the difference between a riot and a good day. The only things that will truly stick with you from the academy besides legalities is to be FIRM, FAIR, and CONSISTENT.

We're lucky, no forced OT here. Been doing it for almost 7 years now. The OT never dries up. The stress comes from management and trash partners. The inmates don't bother me. When they do, I chirp them and move on with my day.

@LEADSPRAYER45

Crazy to me that you had a prison and a jail in the same building. Good advice here man. 7 years working in a county jail I think it’s one of the hardest jobs on the planet. It’s a forgotten world behind the walls normal people only see on Tv. And what you see on TV is not accurate at all. Corrections is not for the weak. We have been working 60-70 hour weeks for 6 months due to under staffing. If you are wanting to try a career in corrections please go for it! We are happy to hire you we would like some days off 😂 But at the same time if you ever feel like the job is not for you or you can’t hack it my advice is quit early rather than late. Nothing worse than just getting someone signed off training for them to quit in two months or cause an unnecessary situation that other officers have to clean up and/or diffuse. Stay safe out there!

When I started just over a year ago my first 8 months I was constantly getting mandated earning 60-80 hours of OT. We only had 27 officers when I started! It was rough and we were almost out of jobs my 3 months in. Luckily the state DOC stepped in, we got new admins, and things have turned around. I enjoy the job for the most part, and if you ask anyone I'm pretty sure they'll say the fellow officers are harder to deal with most of the time. I totally agree that it is one of the hardest jobs. What other job are you going to see 90% of the things we see and deal with anywhere else?! I've had deputies and state police tell me that they can't believe we're able to put up with the job. Most people i've noticed last usually about 6-8 months if that. We are officers, first responders to fights, and medical emergencies. We are the literal back bone of the police force. Just recently applied for my FFL to start a at home gunshop to make a few extra bucks as my part time job. That's the plan anyways. Thin Silver Line brother!

@@LEADSPRAYER45 100% of people on the north american continent break laws. Yet not 100% are locked up. It's pay to play. My step-family is rich I saw it 1st hand 😂 Most ppl in u.s. who actually get arrested after they break laws its because of destitution and drug addiction. You know cia documents reveal flooding streets with crack. You know its common knowledge fda labeled oxys as low-risk for addiction. The drug crises was manufactured intentionally, created on purpose. The state loves rape, violence, drugs and destitution because it's profitable for them. Prison is cheap labor. State contracted prison labor manufactures military equipment. Poor people with no healthcare or education are easy recruits to send off into imperialist wars to die and make Lockheed Martin and other companies wealthy. You're a whore for the state. Imagine being a disgusting animal who locks up human beings for a paycheck. Enjoy a while it lasts because the working class will prevail over you your cages and your guns. You're a pathetic excuse for a man or a woman. You can do better and should. When you decide to stop working for the enemy of the people, you won't have to live in fear anymore. I’ve been doing corrections over 11 years now. I think a lot of the high turnover is because of the stress experienced with people being put into a stressful environment without being put through stress training. These young kids nowadays have never been yelled at their entire life or put through a ringer of stress like getting shot at. The academy easy so they can pass and hire new employees. This does a disservice to them when they get into the prison and they can’t handle it. Military combat vets make prisons look like a cakewalk. I served in the Marines for 5 years as a machine gunner with a deployment to Afghanistan in 2010. I feel we have to retool the academy to put these new hires through a hard military style academy setting with strict discipline, stress, physical conditioning, and teach them to become leaders. Even at the lowest rank, you are still a leader because you taking initiative to get things done is what earns your respect with the inmates. Even if it is over things that they hate like tucking shirts in, taking hats off inside, searching their cells for contraband.

I believe it that the inmates really liked you, you seem like a really personable, outgoing and friendly guy, like someone that I could just kick back and chill with, have a couple of beers and pizza. Unpretentious. When you said "They watch everything," I have heard this from other corrections officer's videos/storytimes. It's super, super creepy, but it makes a lot of twisted sense that the inmates who have nothing to do, and literally nowhere to go would spend a lot of time watching the CO's, learning their schedules, routines, quirks, personalities, any scrap of personal or other information, figuring out what makes them tick, looking for any signs of weakness, personality flaw, or any kind of an opening with them. All of those inmates who watch you as much or more than you watch them, always looking for an angle to work or something to exploit, some way to manipulate, con or scheme. It's creepier than I like to think about, and that alone would stop me from even considering it as a job. I have also heard stories from other CO tubers about male inmates playing really long manipulative games with female officers, finding out which ones were married, single, not getting enough attention at home, felt underappreciated, fighting with their husband/boyfriend, anything about their relationahips and woukd start flattering and love bombing them. They would then manipulate their way into these women's pants, and use them for sex, and smuggling things in. In ine case, one lady lost her job and got divorced because she got pregnant from the inmate she was sleeping with, and everyone knew it couldn't be her husband's baby because he had a vasectomy! It was a wild story and I feel really bad for the kid.

I mean yes some people literally watch to prey on officers male or female Etc but no it is not like no one has anything to do the issue is you are the only outside influence as a guard and every move you make has a lot of bearing on whatever the inmates do basically just to get along during the day even the most laid-back chill and none manipulative inmate is breaking several rules even if it is as simple as passing food to each other. And to do this should make the moves they need to make they need to know everything about that guard that is not working does he go for this will he allow this device will she hand me this do I have to wait for another shift do I need to go to the yard instead exedra. Is it someone that comes in and goes to work and I can move how I need to move to a degree or is this somebody really fishing and I could lose good time my belongings whatever I am passing it from food to drugs to weapons to anyting. The cos need to watch the inmates the same way and believe me they do. It is the biggest game of cat-and-mouse.. And as for all of the personal information that inmates find out either they overhear it or are apart of the conversation themselves and the co giving out this information is just as responsible as the inmate for it being on the airwaves. It is not just know that is CO needs to learn. It is hard as human beings and social creatures to maintain that Rift sometimes between one individual and another. It might seem easy but when you go to work around the same individuals everyday all day just like that syndrome where the kidnapped becomes sympathetic to the Captor.. these inmates depending on your duty within that prison our large part of your daily life and it's hard to ignore them. And most are not looking for your weakness but through daily interaction come across the weaknesses anyway. And within those individuals you do have straight-up predators. Like I said it's a long twisty game of cat-and-mouse. It's got to be a hard career

Some settings you're at a desk by yourself all day in the middle of a fish bowl style unit with cells overlooking you to your left and right. You see inmates popping their heads up by the window to look at you every few minutes. It takes a lot of getting used to. It's always awkward when you check on them window to window and you're in a unit of the opposite sex and they're ass naked on the toilet. Gotta learn to walk quick and use your peripheral vision.

Late update but I decided to not move along in the process. I did not feel comfortable with the background check and lie detector parts. I am not a criminal and don't hangout with criminals but have done illegal things in the past. Transporting a bag of weed and norco pills from a friend to another friend... felony, let a friend keep weed at my house so when he came over after work for a few, he could take a couple of hits... little things like that. Minor things in my opinion. Never would I allow myself to be around hard drugs but in the eyes of detectives and poly gragh folks... I know they wouldn't allow me to explain the past choices. At any point during the procedure if they felt like they didn't like something, they would not continue with the process. It just sounded like too much. There were other things but those are examples. I understand they can't hire random people off the streets and they need to find out if someone is bat shit crazy or a good person who they can trust. But yeah it was overwhelming. Just wish I could explain the past but they're not messing around. State police conduct the tests. Not some drunk sheriff in a hick town...

Look, respect is earned, not given and it works both ways. Certainly initiate everything with respect, and address people by their last name, but it’s only “chill” if you’re not doing your job. You don’t have “problems” if you’re looking the other way. This “it’s always chill if you show respect” is false bro, and not a good thing to perpetuate to guys looking to get into the field. It’s always chill if you’re crooked and don’t care about your job and working for the inmates is what he means Also, dude is/was an inmate with a cellphone? Where? I don’t believe you were ever an officer.

@@leroybrown549 bro quick warning. This career has an incredibly high divorce/suicide rate. Your gonna see some shit you'll more then likely never see in your life time otherwise. If that doesn't deter you then here's some advice. Be fair firm and consistent. Inmates are not your friends and are gonna test you daily to see what they can get away with. Final thing is assume an inmate is lying to you unless proven otherwise.

@@AndroidGamesFTW Thank you for the advice. I was in the Army for 7 years and deployed once. I have seen a lot of stuff already. I don't think that's gonna bother me. The only thing I am really worried about is the person I am going to turn into. That was the situation when I got back from my only deployment. I became a different person after all that. I just wonder how I am going to do in that department when I start working.

Might as well say the same about cops, who ride around in a patrol car all day and then go back to the office to sit and do paperwork. Shit, might as well say the same about soldiers or any other servicemen who clean all day or sit at a computer because we aren’t in wartime. If it’s so easy then do it, the pay is decent.

I’m a C.O at a max and this is by far the easiest job I’ve ever had 😂 The money (with overtime ) is amazing. You literally write ✍️ your own check. I work for the state It’s dangerous it’s unorganized it’s filed with idiots in both uniforms. If you have a strong mind and a goal it’s a great job. The caveat to my comment is I’m from Brooklyn ny “The hood” and I’m 45 so I was comfortable in the environment. If your not from a high stress environment it’s probably not the job for you (you can learn to adjust if you really want it ) the prison is like living in the projects in any low income urban city, you have the killers gang members rapist etc etc and you have to navigate that environment while giving direction. I love it!
