What I liked about the small change videos is that they were productive. Not just complaining but looking at why something works or doesn't for someone. And figuring out an alternative.
@sofiadragon6520

Exactly! This is so much more constructive than just spitting negativity. The internet isn't a great place for real constructive criticism. When it is given publicly a bandwagon tends to show up and paint a gray review as either black or white. Everything has to be awful or perfect. Even in the fanfiction community - which the one small change videos are very close to - it is still a minefield in the Captain America Civil War fan space with stans ready to pile on one side or the other. It is so much more work than just listing what you don't like, and then people are going to tear it apart if they disagree. The Change videos are creative in their own right, because they imagine something new, and art doesn't expire. The writing in those alternate plot outlines is really interesting. It isn't as bad on other platforms/formats. Videos tend to be a bit disposable. It is a lot less likely that a Marvel fan will come watch all the old One Small Change videos than they will, for example, read all of Annafandom's salty "if Civil War was more realistic" drabbles on AO3 or read a five year old post about Loki on Tumblr.

Well, I really don't think your OSC videos come off as "this movie was bad and I could do better", and I really appreciated that particular type of problem solving, because it's what I do whenever I come out of a movie (movies I love as well as movies I did not love), and I like to work those mental reflexes and hear your takes as well. I'd love if you would make more of them, but I also don't feel entitled to anything. I like your pitches too.

I love that you explicitly stated that you don't owe us anything. I would love to see that normalized. I have grown very disturbed by the weird sense of ownership some people seem to have about entertainers they follow.
@Levyathyn
@Levyathyn 8 ай бұрын
This is the best mindset, of course, the best approach. But I will say I can understand the DIRECTION people like that are coming from. Some people find a single thing they love, and subscribe to a KZfaqr (or buy a movie, move to a new city, whatever) because of that thing. And when that thing then goes away, people can be frustrated, they can feel slighted. Obviously the entitled, Karen-esque decree that people are owed or obligated certain features of a KZfaq channel for example, that's wrong and dumb. But there is a core of human relatability there, buried inside of it somewhere.

@@vc1396 We didn't do anything to get the entertainers we enjoy "where they are". We didn't have meeting and decide together who to elevate. We all individually chose to spend our time being entertained by someone who we found entertaining. This is a transaction. We want entertainment. They have entertainment. We pay them for the entertainment. Except in the case of online creators like Nando, where most people just take the entertainment for free. For KZfaq, it's a particularly lopsided transaction, where most "fans" are literally stealing the entertainment they consume, by blocking the ads that are meant to function as the payment for access to the material. The idea that we did ANYTHING to contribute to an entertainer's success is a weird delusion that needs to be dispelled.

Since their won't be any more, let me recall my two favorite One Small Changes you did: • Drax travels with Rocket & Thor to forge Stormbraker. He's the one to sacrifice himself to open the forge. Gives Thor a sense of purpose. Tells him to make Thanos suffer (not "go for the head"). • In Endgame, when the girls assemble, it should have been Nebula carrying the gauntlet to the van. A last rebel act towards her father. thanks Nando

I understand your concern about being seen as the guy who criticizes movies. But honestly I dont think your one small change videos could ever give that impression (not counting random YT comments, which can be insane). They're constructive not destructive which makes them incredibly tame compared to litterally any negative review. Also, any writer worth anything knows how important criticism is to the writing process. The OSC video's are some of the better criticisms I've seen since you explain the problems well and AND you give possible solutions. Even on the OSC videos where I don't like the solution or dont agree that something is a problem, I always learn something.

Honestly, I kinda have to agree. The OSC videos never gave me the vibe that you thought you knew better than the writers, but I do think some viewers can end up walking away with that attitude. It's easy to propose edits from an outsider's view, when you're looking at the finished project and don't have to factor in things like production restrictions, logistical issues, or executive meddling. Obviously these movies aren't above reproach, but there's a fine line between "here's an idea I think could improve the story, and here are all the ramifications that idea would have" and "here's what this movie should've done" and a lot of people tend to gloss over that nuance.

I’d have to agree with your appraisal, it’s definitely more about cultivating a certain audience than how the videos come off themselves. A lot of people can be pretty obnoxious and know it all with film criticism as is without having a KZfaq video to link and go “see! This is better!!!”

I’ve been waiting for this video! Very interested to learn the reason, as they are my favorite videos of yours and I still rewatch many of them. I’m sure you have a great reason for stopping though, probably to do with being content with what we get instead of dwelling on movies we could’ve gotten. EDIT (After Watching): I’m so glad your favorite videos are the pitch videos because they’re my other favorite videos!! And Covid being something that made you hesitate before critiquing a movie makes a lot of sense. And I understand you wanting to have a more positive image among people you could work with some days, because you absolutely should be writing movies for a living!!!!! I wish you the best of luck. So, I am one of those guys that really was just here for the One Small Change/Rewrite stuff, subscribed since 2017-ish, and I've not tuned in to any of your videos in a long time. On one hand, I'm glad that what you are doing is something you really like. I watched the Wolverine fancasting one, the Thunderbolts pitch, they are both some of the most fun videos I've watched. If I were as into comics as I were into movies, I could certainly see myself still sticking around. That said, I am not a comic book fan-I liked the rewrite stuff, not because I really liked comic books, but because I liked movies. Some other commenter compared it to fanfiction, and I would say thiat is apt, even to this. It feels like a writer I've been following for a while finally coming out and saying that they're no longer going to update the stories I've really loved reading. And that's kind of a shame, because those rewrites were a big part of why I'm still writing fiction today. If I had to name the three most influential authors in my life, among the author of Jojo and a fanfiction author from 10 years ago, I'd certainly name you as #3. Stories, to me, are like well-oiled machines where every piece is connected to each other and functions in a way that allows the rest of the beast to run smoothly without taking up too much or too little space, and I think your rewrites were one of the things that influenced that outlook the most. Genuinely, those videos have had such an impact on my life today, and while it's disheartening to hear that this is probably the end, I'd just like to say that I'm so grateful that you made them at all. Whatever you decide to next, I only wish you the best, and stay safe!

Instead of "One small change" and how it would affect the movie (which has an armchair quarterback feel, but can be so correct, like the New Mutants one), what about a slight reshaping of it? Like in that Community chaos theory episode, taking a movie and seeing what could change from different details. For example, instead of saying that Spidey SHOULD HAVE been introduced differently, just playing with a few ways that he COULD HAVE been introduced at a different time or in a different way or for a different purpose, bringing in comic details (like what if we saw Rogue as a villain first). Some idea along these lines might spring to mind, and it would be great to see a framework ready to go. More "if"

I always enjoyed them because they weren't complaints about the look or acting of the films. They were neat "What If"s without outright saying "the writers were bad and dumb!" Just saying "I like what you did, but how neat would it have been to explore this path" And also, your concern about working with them and thinking they would be mad. I would look positively and say you would be able to see small issues and a different path to get to the same ending they want.

im very glad you tackle this the way you do, for a while i have become progressively exhausted of the hyper cynical, overly critical style of videos that has kinda flooded the movie review/essay/discussion youtube sphere. one more reason why you alwasy stood out from the crowd to me. because whether your videos were percieved in that same way by some people, they were never mean spirited, wich i cant say the same about a lot of other creators, where not only theres a certain cynical nature to them, but also at times are fueled by questionable politics. i love the pitch videos, its something i have always done with friends aswell, sometimes we spend hours making random movie pitches so i relate a lot with them.

He used to make a 'worst 10 movies of the year' video and review movies he didn't like, but once he started getting more serious about wanting to make movies professionally, he decided to stop those kind of negative videos since he didn't want to create any bad blood with directors and the movie industry.

One class I taught at university had 25% of the students named Matt. On the first day of class, I was doing a quick introduction to linked lists, and picked a student and had them stand up and give their name and pick another student. Matt stands up. He picks Matt. Matt picks a third student, who says their name is Matthew. I was like "Is this an April Fool's joke?" (It was April 1st), but no, I just hadn't read the student list yet. Legit, 25% Matts. I ended up themeing some of the homework after the prevalence of Matts (the Mattpocalypse). So I completely sympathize where Nando is coming from with the name.

No matter where your career goes from here, and I will watch and salute you the whole way, I will always keep the hypothetical version of Iron Man 2 with big bad Justin Hammer in the Titanium Man suit close to my heart.

I wish you'd bring them back. The OSC videos were what got me to subscribe and, after checking, I haven't really watched anything since your last one. Hadn't even realized. I think I'd see a new video drop and would think I'd come back around to it but I never have. But when a OSC video dropped I'd watch it as fast as I could.

Hi! Long time fan, first time commenter. I watched this on nebula a few days ago and I appreciated the deep dive into your story. I eagerly await every mostly nitpicking and your vids - they all bring a ton of humor, thought and a plethora of shared fandom geek out moments each week or so. Thanks for all you do to put all this together and while I’ll miss the V Movies, I appreciate the transparency and I also absolutely love all the content you make. I see it as an evolution or maybe your own small changes so I appreciate watching you try new stuff and putting out solid content on the regular 😎 thanks again Nando!

Thanks for sharing, as with many I was curious. It is a shame because I loved your rewrites, and your small changes. For me it was never you acting like you know better or didnt take into account the full circumstances, you always acknowledged what you thought were obstacles for the studio. I always looked forward to seeing these videos because, to me, it was like mentally watching a different movie and re-experiencing it. I never watch a movie twice, but these videos gave me the feeling of a brand new exciting watching, and appreciate a well thought out story. Its like getting two movies for one.

Yes, I thought that you or your parents were peri peri chicken entrepreneurs... 😅 Continue to do the great work that you like, and we continue to be eager fans 🙂 Looking forward to the Secret Invasion one but wondering if you could do a revisit of Artemis Fowl. I was a fan of the books and could not stomach even trying to watch the movie.... so if you did enough research on the books, wondering if it can be a whole KZfaq piece or even a portion on Nitpicking. Thanks as ever Matt eherm, Nando!

I really appreciate this video, a nice insight into something I had been wondering. I really enjoyed the One Small Change videos and your rewrites (rewatched each of them recently, particularly loved the Justice League rewrite) and had been missing OSC a bit, much as I enjoy the fancasting (I am sometimes unable to keep up, especially for younger characters, as I don't watch the best shows to find actors for those) and especially the pitches. I never thought of OSC being "I know better than the writer" so much as "this would've worked better for me", though I understand how it could seem this way, and I really understand wanting to avoid appearing that way. I also understand that (especially COVID-involved) fear that you're just hitting upon the thing that was intended but not possible for some reason. One thing I really liked about the OSC vids is that it helped me look at certain aspects of a film more critically, to understand why certain things worked for me and others didn't. I am happy to watch whatever you make, even if I am a little lost (like with fancasting The Authority).

I respect all of the reasons Nando is not doing one small change, but I did love those segments and I wish/hope he changes his mind. I will still be a supporter regardless, but I if I get a vote I would vote for OSC to come back. I will say, I do appreciate at least explaining why he's not doing them.

Hey Nando, I found your channel when you were doing the Hela isn’t Hela and Ego isn’t Ego videos, but became a fan when you did the One Small Changes and Rewrites. I was even on your Patreon for a while (sorry I’m not anymore, times have been tough here in Chile). I just want to say, I really miss your classic videos and I’m not a huge fan of the casting ones. I think you always were careful and considerate to say that writers work under a lot of stress and you have the benefit of hindsight and I don’t reckon anyone would have the gall of accusing you of being a “jabroni” as you call them (I also think you’re being a little unfair to the Critical Drinker but that’s getting kind of off topic). I am a big follower of the NCU and I replay your videos every now and then because I think you have a tremendous talent for spotting the mistakes that Marvel made and your fixes and rewrites are incredible. I’ve been wondering for a time why you stopped making them and thanks for the answer, I totally understand the business side of them not having as many views but I’m still bummed about you deciding to stop making them. I don’t think anyone would lump you into the jabroni group after your passionate defense of She Hulk as a show (I vehemently disagree with your take btw but that’s fine) and I wish you would rewrite Multiverse of Madness or Eternals since they could very much use your revisions. Sorry for the rant and thanks for the hours of content and joy you have brought all of us.

I didn't know you were talking about him, but I can only handle a video or two from TCD every so often. I like critical thinking and examining films, but not just being negative cause it sells to be negative and his channel and so many others feel that way. The world is negative enough as is

First time watching this channel and I have to say: what an incredibly nuanced and self-aware take on... well, everything discussed. I'm a professional tv writer and though I didn't work on any of the shows discussed (despite my best efforts on that front), this shows a really solid grasp of the reality of how film/tv is made.

You did a video where you put Boomerang into the script and set up this arc where it looks like he defects, just so you could have him come back for the final fight and say something like: "What you need to remember is boomarangs always come back" something like that, and it was such a zinger I subscribed. I guess I would like to see more videos like that about shows I care about where you write in these little arcs that culminate in "drop the mic" one liners.

Do what makes you happy, but for what it's worth, I really enjoyed One Small Change videos as writing exercises using a shared language and experiences, and really enjoyed that engineering challenge of making something work using the pre-existing pieces. I also think the difference between "this idea would make the movie more successful" and "this idea would've had me enjoying it more" is very clear, and suggesting a change for that personal reason is valid. It's less "you made the cake wrong" and more "I like pineapple." Also, only speaking for myself, but I'm way less interested in casting videos than pitch and change videos. Again, that's because I'm more interested in the writing than the film-making.
