This video is about why I stopped wearing wigs!
Now, just to be clear, I am SURE i will wear wigs again in the future or maybe clips ins. I am a hair blogger after all but I needed a break! People thought that I would cover up my short hair soon after cutting it but, truth be told, I haven't had that urge! The thing is, wigs are beautiful and I love them BUT I want to show the world my OWN beauty. I don't want to hid it.
What do you think about wigs? I don't always find the best words to express myself but let's continue the conversation below! xo

Totally relate to this video. Was a wigaholic for years until I realized that I didn’t feel pretty or like I looked right without wigs. Like you, I began to feel like my thin, fine natural hair didn’t look the way I wanted it to look. I decided to quit cold turkey for a year to force myself to confront my face and my hair. That was 4 years ago and I haven’t gone back to wigs. I don’t have a “I stopped wearing wigs and now my hair is waist length” testimony. However, my edges have grown back in and now I’m reconciled with my hair as it grows from my head.

Any advice on how I can wear my hair while my edges are growing back from wearing frontals? I want to lose the wig, I do have hair, but my hairline is thin due to the friction of 3 years of frontals.... How did you wear your hair the 1st few months?
@mimiluau
@mimiluau 6 жыл бұрын
Kysha Hampton I did a lot of styles with bangs and forward bouffants, pinning them in such a way to hide my thin edges. Eventually it got to a point that I really didn’t care and just wore my edges the way they are. But if it’s significantly bad, they sell the hair fibers/powder (I know there’s an easily accessible brand called Toppik (NaturalMe4C on YT used it when her hair was thinning there is a higher end brand called Grace Microfibers that a trichologist I follow on Instagram recommends) that make your edges look fuller whilst they grow out without requiring too much manipulation, allowing you to do whatever style you want.

My true struggle was with hair extensions, not wigs. I have tried everything from sew-ins to kinky twists to crochet. The sew-ins looked awful and so fake, yet I wore them to get past my awkward phase after someone commented on how much better I look with them. After the awkward phase I was still addicted to extensions, but I wore kinky twists and box braids. Whenever I would take a break from the braids I felt so ugly. My real hair looked too thin and it shrunk up too short. It was tangled and knotted. I literally cried one detangling session, I was so exhausted with my 4c hair. I mean without the extensions, my whole personality would change. I was shy and soft spoken, instead of my usual upbeat self. I wouldn't go out with friends on those weekends. When the extensions were back in, I felt beautiful and sassy again. It was not a good place for my self esteem to be in. I finally broke the cycle two weeks ago and decided to loc my hair. Now I fall in love with my reflection everyday

@@radiantshay2146 I don't wear wigs because I sweat in my scalp and I would not be able to take it. But they do look nice. For the longest time I couldn't tell whether it was someone's real hair or not. I saw braids with the scalp showing and baby hair and figured how can that be fake. Finally I started seeing one too many with the same type of baby hairs and I looked up wigs and baby hair and found out how it was done lol. But women don't like to admit they just like the look of the hair. Instead they say it's to protect their hair and to let it grow. But then I see how the edges are all broken off. Its ok if you like the way it looks and it makes you happy. Just maybe find a way to do it where its not breaking off your hair. Maybe switch it up sometimes and do a weave or clip ins or something. Why get defensive about it and try to make it seem like your only wearing them for protective reasons.

Good move on your part. I am still at a loss with women who cover their natural hair up all the time just to boast length and retention in videos. I don't wear wigs, but i did buy two afro textured wigs, but after wearing them less than five times, i felt like i would rather just wear my own hair. Also, i'm glad you are one less 4c youtuber wearing long, straight wigs, and/or weaves, for the time being. Not trying to offend anyone, but it is disappointing that a lot of 4c gals have like one or two videos with their natural hair, and/or maybe braids, but the rest of their videos is full of them wearing the straightest wigs and/or weaves possible. I hardly see any other textures do this as much as 4c. Anyways, glad you are giving it a break for the time being, but hey, if you pick it back up, you pick it back, I'll still watch lol

byoung4eva1, I liked her video, but just as she made a choice not to wear wigs , I think others that wear them is also a choice. There is no right or wrong. Why should someone be condemned for choosing to wear their own hair chemically free or a wig. There are people that prefer chemicals in their hair because they don't like the looks of course hair. Again, that is the choice of the individual. Everything isn't for everyone.
@byoung4eva1
@byoung4eva1 6 жыл бұрын
+It's My Life I don't think wearing one's own hair is something they are "condemned" to do. Yes, everyone has a choice, but it is indeed WRONG to expose our bodies to chemical relaxers. It is indeed WRONG as to why relaxers are marketed heavily to black ppl, and not checked by the FDA. It is, indeed, WRONG, why many black ppl didn't like their natural hair in the first place due to brainwashing beginning since the days of slavery, and passed down for generation. It is, indeed, WRONG as to why so many black women are walking around with the straightest weave possible, yet you see no other race of woman walking around with afro textured weaves. I agree, everyone has a choice with what they want to do with their hair, but i'm not gonna sugar coat/simplify the reasons why we do these things in the first place. I like the video as well : )

I love your candidness in this video! I’ve never worn wigs, but I’ve worn sew ins twice before and I stopped because of a lot of the sentiments you expressed in this video, the number one being not recognizing myself. I thought I looked very strange. I, too, believe that I am at my best with my natural hair. Wash day is a pain sometimes, but ironically it’s one of my favorite days because I just love giving my hair TLC and watching it flourish. If i do go for a style that requires extensions, I go for more Afrocentric looks like braids, twists, cornrows.

Omg yesss about where do you put it?? I would stay at my fiancé's (boyfriend at the time) house and keep it behind his computer. We had been together for years. But it was still awkward and uncomfortable taking it off at night. And I always felt bad about myself too, like, sorry the long silly hair is gone...it's just me and my coarse 4C besides hair. I would always put a scarf on super fast so he didn't see the braids. So happy I wear my natural hair now :)

I stopped wearing wigs in Sept. I started wearing a head wrap and since it's cold a hat. I just told my friend a few minutes ago.....I hate the way I look with MY OWN hair. I feel so guilty and sad. I'm used to getting attention. I love the experience and I know GOD is working on me but I need to feel beautiful and no matter what I do or wear I dont..... I won't let it win though.. I know I'm still pretty, it's just people, including myself, don't treat you like the queen you will become once this period is over and you truly know self love from within

Sis! I totally agree everything you said, these are the same reasons I stopped wearing wigs. I was a Wig-aholic Lol, browsing online for bundles or full lace wigs, but never took care of my hair underneath. It takes courage to wear your natural hair out, especially if you cut it short to a TWA. I started off with shaving all of my relaxed hair when I went natural and it’s been an interesting yet fun journey since then and now I have a TWA that absolutely love! If I was to start wearing wigs again, I would also wear a wig that’s close to my natural textured hair, it just makes sense. Great video! Love your hair btw!❤️

I'm on the fence with this. I live in Nova Scotia and the winters are harsh on my 4Z hair. I used to wear crochet braids but that made it difficult to care for my natural hair. I started wearing wigs and every weekend I care for my hair and it has started flourishing. It is uncomfortable at times and there is concern for my edges but the weather here makes it scary to wear my hair exposed.

Sharon, Pierre Louis, do you beautiful! Don't be on the fence about something thats working for you. All wigs aren't heavy and hot, nor does all wigs cause hair breakage because they're made differently. Stocking caps prevent hair breakage and removing the wig before bed allows hair and scalp to breathe. This helps with hair growth. I'm a former hairstylist. I was deep into the care of the hair and scalp. Due to the fact you remove the wig and care for your hair is awesome . Not to mention there are people suffering form hair loss , due to illness or alopecia. Alopecia isn't all caused by not taking care of your hair. It can be hereditary . With this being said, continue to do whats best for you. I respect anyone that does whats best for them without condemning others.

I can kind of relate to this when it comes to braids (attachment). I used to “hide behind” braids (never really liked my hair and I felt insecure😬) and I was always thinking about my next style. Literally after taking it down (after having it in for like 5 months 😂) I would wait a day or two and then get braids it. Right now I’m taking a break for about a year or so (I’m starting to really like my hair a lot more). The urge to get braids comes back when I see others wearing braids (especially if it’s a cute style).

I went through a wig phase too and it was great. But when I decided to go natural though, I gave it up. My hair felt even better. It had been a long time before I felt the sun shining on it, or the wind blowing through it. I even wore wigs in Summer! Now, I haven't the time, money, or patience to do wigs ever again. It was a phase, and now it's over. I've saved so much money over the years lol!

So im looking foward to buy a kinky straight that looks like my hair but blowdried. A lot people will claim that wearing wigs is better to protect hair i do agree but i also thing you can also grow your hair long if you wear it out in protective or low manipulation style. I find that i look better or prettier with my natural hair than a wig.

All the reasons you put forth is why I haven't worn wigs in years. I'll wear braids (extensions), and take them out after 6 to 8 weeks and leave them out for a while just to fall in love with my face with my natural hair again. Not to mention as soon as I put braids in, all I wanna do is take them out because I love wearing my natural hair out. Sometimes to my own detriment during the winter months (which I've stopped doing). I love what you said about wearing something that's closer to our natural hair texture though. If I were to wear a wig, or bun that's exactly what I'd do. I don't feel I've been natural long enough to be covering up what I'm still learning about. Thanks for sharing this video! Bisous!

I recently just came out of a sew in, hunny, I slayed at life with it. It was convenient, super low maintenance. I took it out and my hair was dry, i felt horrible for neglecting my hair but the body wave was addictive. I considered a wig so I can take better care of my hair underneath, but I know I won't so twist outs, moisturizing and deep conditioners and low ponytails for me.

Your natural self is the best beauty! In modeling school they advise that all women have one wig for when they are traveling or for an emergency when they may not be able to find time to fix their own hair. Such as traveling on a train or plane and then having to walk through the train station or airport. But I love what you said about wigs causing you to dislike your own hair and feel that the wig was better. That is something I never really thought about consciously but it is so true. Thank you for this great video!

Wigs and weaves ripped out my hair line. So what's the point🤔. Funny thing is I do have thick great hair. Wish I never touched either wigs or weaves. If I have a daughter , I will warn her of them😂. Stay away from wigs and weaves. Love your own hair. Unless you have a medical condition , why oh why destroy you own hair. I wish I know then what I have learnt now. Another thing, my sister who has same thick hair as me, never in her life has she worn a wig or weave, yet her hair is amazing healthy. The main thing thing I know it's that, unlike me spending thousands on weaves and wigs over the years, and stupidily damaging my hair, my sister spent her money on tending to her own hair. Not fake hair. 😂

I have a selection of cheap wigs that I bought over the years for bad hair days. I keep throwing them out and re-buying because they look awful and the combs hurt haha. Whenever I would wear them, it would be with a hat on top to make it look less wiggy. Once I actually broke down and spent $200+ on a wig. When it arrived in the mail, it still looked like trash on me. You're darn right wigs aren't for everyone

I had the same thing about makeup, didn't wear too much, but I realized I wouldn't go even to the store without makeup, and for the first week of not wearing makeup people asked it I was sick, and to some I explained why, and others I just said yes to get them off my back.Now I just do a touch of make up, that I don't look too different without it. I'm putting down the wig as well, and rather work on nourishing my natural hair. 😁I was beginning to feel like I don't look as beautiful with my natural hair as I do with wigs. I'm throwing them out. There's so many women I've never seen wearing wigs and I never for a moment thought they're ugly or even thought they should get a wig to enhance their looks. But then why am I doing it with myself 🤔looked this up as I was conflicted about buying another wig.

Hi Jenn, I'm with you on wearing your own natural hair. One day I got tired of buying fake hair to braid into my hair. I found it to be expensive, and when product is applied to my hair it not o m ly goes to my hair, but the fake hair as well. Anytime I wore braids, my natural hair would grow through the synthetic hair. It always looked terrible after 1 month. When I serious became tired of fake hair, I saw my hair in a new light. I really discovered how beautiful my natural African American hair really is. I live managing it. I have a routine that's working for me at the moment. And I keep my ends trimmed and I stay hydrated. I live the coils, texture, and the thickness. I apy water before I use products on my hair. This process makes my hair a o manageable. I love the feel of my hair. So happy to be African American. My hair is lovely.
