It can be frustrating to always find your sugar high in the morning! This video covers what is the proper way to do a fasting blood sugar, the reasons why sugar is high in the morning, like the Dawn Phenomenon and the Somogyi effect. Finally, it reviews ways to improve your morning blood sugars. Written by endocrinologist Dr. Christopher Palmeiro and produced by Doctablet®

What happens to me is I usually wake up 2-3 hours after going to sleep and I'm thirsty, hungry, agitated and hot. If I look on my CGM, my blood sugar at this point has usually dipped down, maybe even as low as 70-80 range. Once I eat and drink something, I cool back down and get to sleep easily. If I resist that snack, I'll usually just lay there hot and frustrated until I finally do go get something to eat.

I'm similar but opposite! Until recently I was getting glucose spikes which were waking me up giving me terrible sleep. An ultra low carb/sugar diet and cutting out fruit for breakfast seems to be helping. And absolutely no sugar (e.g. fruit) after 6pm.

Why the video starts with the statement that morning blood sugar is high because of diabetes. Does it must be diabetes? Can it be insulin resistance or not even that? Rather, our morning sugar will be high or higher than usual even if we are the healthiest persons on earth! Why? Ask growth hormone, ask adrenaline, or ... well, I am not a doctor.

What about those of us for whom 2AM is NOT in the middle of the night? I generally go to bed around 2 AM (and get up around 10 AM). Do I just move the times by about 4 hours? I know that some biologic processes are affected by the actual time of day or sunrise or similar phenomena. How does this play into mix?
@Doctablet
@Doctablet 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, we would recommend adjusting the times by about 4 hours. This assumes you keep the same schedule every day. The hormones and your brain adjusts to this schedule if it is consistent

I kept waking up for months. Waking up at 3am not being able to get back to sleep. Zombie all day. GP couldn't figure it out. Then I stumbled onto dawn phenomenon via KZfaq. Got a blood glucose monitor. Checked during the day/after meals etc, was fine. But on waking up at 3am it was higher (around 6.7). I do keto and 16/8. So started having a handful of nuts right before bed. Still wake up (which is normal). But sleep is much better and I can get back to sleep so this worked for me. Try a couple of slices of goat cheese before bed. Helps with ketone production. I also try to take berberine at bed and acv drink. I find when I do this I can remain in ketosis overnight. Otherwise I can go to bed in ketosis and wake up with no ketones which I think must be related to the dawn effect.

You are insulin resistant. No matter how much insulin you inject, your cells have too much glucose in them so they shut down reception of glucose. You will have to fast and do high intensity exercise to reverse this. It is that simple. Don't eat for six hours before you exercise. You will drop the sugar quickly.

Hi Milon, we do not provide medical advice on this channel. The videos are educational. In our experience a single isolated blood sugar of 110 mg/dL does not make a diagnosis of pre diabetes. Also 11AM could be fasting for some people and after a meal for others.

Weird. My fasting levels in the morning are 6.0mmol. But in the afternoon (like 2-3pm) even right after i eat something it's only 6.4mmol. If i was a diabetic it should be way higher than 6.4 after eating. So.. i don't get it. In the mornings i'm almost diabetic. But during the day my glucose drops to low levels. So.. what the hell. I'm thinking it has to do something with cortisol (i suffer from severe anxiety).. or it has to do something with my diet (i fast for 24 hours). So.. am i diabetic or not? Very contradicting measurements.

That is called impaired fasting glucose and likely correlates with prediabetes. It is due to insulin resistance in the liver. Cortisol can certainly be contributing as well

@@Doctablet Well maybe it was a one-off error. Or maybe that i ate alot of sweets the day before? Plus my cortisol was skyrocketing cuz i did the test in the hospital (was anxious). But now i bought glucometer and everything seems perfect. Through the day (even after a meal) it was 5.4-6.4mmol-. And now in the morning i measured my fasting glucose it was 4.8mmol. You think it might've been due to sweets and/or my anxiety spiking in the hospital?

Metformin at bed time is not helping at all. Need to take it with last meal at 5-6 pm, that meal should have some resistant starch (4-5 hours before bedtime) Morning levels must be under 8 mmol/L (164 mg/dl) to avoid nerve damage. You may have to skip dinners all together and lose weight to get healthy BMI 👍
