I've been saying this for years, I miss hearing this style of playing. Just because you can fit more notes in a space doesn't always mean you should and it's why Clapton, Allman, Kossoff, King, Betts, Gilmore,...etc. are still so revered to this day!

Billy Gibbons, Leslie West, the boys from Skynyrd, Ted Nugent and Ace Frehley always makes the hair on my arm stand up...Shred has never done that...

Blackberry smoke is still using this type of technique and style. Using dynamics, vibrato, harmonics and different degrees of Bends is key to tasty licks and solos with sometimes sped up lines here and there is the way to go. That type of licks and solos gives recognition to a song that sticks in your head. It helps makes for a song to have longevity in my opinion.

You get it. It's a style that is rooted in the blues, and is vocal in inspiration. It emphasises individuality of voice and emotion, and to do that you have to hang on to a note long enough for your control of dynamics and attack to affect the sound. Speed and complexity are not the point. Every one of these players has an individual voice: that used to be a point of pride. The faster and more 'accurately' you play, the more you are likely to sound like every other player. It's the difference between sterile technical command of an instrument and making music. There are many guitar players who are 'better' than the greats, if technique is your benchmark. But I rarely hear players now who are as distinctive, and as communicative as Hendrix, Santana, Clapton, Beck, Page, Gibbons, Young.

This why I think Paul Kossoff’s solo from All Right Now is phenomenal. The vibrato and phrasing is perfect.

Very cool, it's not always about the notes, but the space between the notes that give it beauty.

I'm a big LS fan, but without Free, They would have never been the band we knew. Paul Rogers was a huge influence on Ronnie's vocal style, and Gary was very influenced by Kossoff.

Brilliant insight and perspective. I think Clapton wrote the handbook 66-68 then all these great players ran with the ideas and the Les Paul/Marshall pairing. Btw your thumbnails are so cool-what app do you use?

what you wait for solos to play like that? I just play that way while I sing.. it's sloppy and i mess up lots but i can't not do it.. JJN seems a modern example.

The hanging notes are true playing from the soul. This primarily comes from players who haven't "traditionally" learned to play. It's playing from feeling.

You'll see these greats hang out in one pentatonic shape and make it sound different each time. Amazing phrasing and something that needs to come back today. Clapton played the entire 2nd solo in Crossroads in the 17th fret pentatonic!

Not sure how old you are but you look younger than me. You must have an old soul like me, Tom. I noticed from this channel and your golf channel you make a lot of references to things from the 70s and 80s.

I'm 55 and around 6 years ago Tom had quite a bit of Lynyrd Skynyrd how to videos. Which his accuracy and technique of all of Skynyrds guitarists was insane. Which he put them in a lock box. But he's getting new material out now thank God. But he was probably a tree hugging flower child in his previous life. Which is A Ok. 😮

I love the style of lead guitar playing that you're talking about, and it's great to see Dickey Betts getting some appreciation! I'd also add Leslie West and the classic Thin Lizzy line up of Scott Gorham & Brian Robertson to the list... the solos in "Cowboy Song" are top tier, imo. Also, I just want to point out that even when you played that fast, flashy bit to show contrast, it still had tons of VIBE, brother! Reminded me of Ella Fitzgerald's scat singing!

we love this style, but the world has changed and music has changed for the worse. I still play this style everyday and it's becoming a lost art. Gibbons Skynard Hendrix all great blues players, best period in time for guitar!
