Robert Williams has been killing it lately for the Boston Celtics. Williams operates as their defensive anchor and does so much for them. Not only is Williams a fantastic and versatile defender, but he's also an incredibly underrated offensive piece.
The Boston Celtics have one of the league's best defenses, and it's in large part due to the play from Robert Williams. See how Williams is changing everything for the Boston Celtics.

Rob is the DPOTY in my opinion. He's the most impactful defensive player on the best defense in the league and it's not subtle. There are also so many times that guys just don't even dare to enter the paint with him roaming because they know he's going to either block it or force a terrible shot. Also, if he can become more aggressive looking for his own offense and gets some confidence in his jumper, he will be an All Star.

How can you say he is breaking up plays more then Smart? Smart forces them to change plays twice before giving up a set and running a broken lay up play Rob or Horford can send to the moon. They arent running plays into Rob that he is stopping. Smart is taking away their options and leaving them with a deep contest three or a weakside lay up for Rob to feast on. Its a team effort but Rob made a video explaining this the other day.

I remember many comments about Robert Williams after he was drafted and how he would be out of basketball in a couple years due to injuries and personal issues. The support system the team created to show him how to become a pro and a better person, and how he responded, is why we are now seeing the full potential of his game emerge on a nightly basis. This is a great success story of the way trust and dedication to developing a player, who only needed some guidance and sound culture around him, has made the team a title contender. The Celtics would not be on this path without Time Lord.

Underrated thing he does is get ball out fast on outlets as well. As his rebounding increased so did our pace. Watch how many times a game he doesn’t even bother catching a rebound to the floor and just taps or outlets in air. Another thing about his defense is he’s forcing bad decisions. People are hyper aware of his presence and pass on layups and/or throw passes back outside to no one or heavily guarded guys.

It's mindblowing that his gifts stand out as much as they do in a league where almost everyone is a world-class athlete. Huge Celtics fan here. Big Williams fan. I love the dude but i think some of the lack of hype is how publicly undressed embiid and joker have left him. Those are two MVP players so its no shame to get beat by them but you cant deny that against the 76ers Smart steps up and guards embiid in the big moments. Since those guys have so many league eyes on them i am wondering if thats why he doesnt get talked about. Hard to make a case for DPOY when in the biggest moments with the most eyes you take a step back to being the number 2 guy. Still crazy that shit can effect narrative since the dude is putting up great numbers.

Rob Williams is probably tricky for opponents because he's only 6'8 (which is still tall) but it leaves guys more confident they can score over him than were he a true center height. One of the things that stands out about him is that he's one of very few centers that isn't a liability defending the perimeter. His footwork is excellent and he does a very good job keeping up with guards. He has multiple game winning blocks, on the PERIMETER, and he also can move his feet quick enough in combination with his long strides to stay with fast players driving to the rim and block them or at least majorly disrupt their shot. Not many centers can do that

I think there was also the really big issue of Rob always being hurt. We definitely saw flashes of what he could be, but this year, a lot of things clicked. He’s not biting as much for pump fakes, he’s showing his skills as a facilitator, and most important, he’s shown he can stay on the court. The Celtics been my team for so long but this is more recent , I remember playing 2K21 fairly often but I pretty much only played MyLeague, I would always make Robert Williams have max potential and if he wasn’t as progressed as I thought he should’ve been I’d specifically make him better😭 I remember the game pretty much looked at me crazy putting him higher than everyone except Tatum and Brown because everytime I’d simulate seasons and not touch him he’d always be on the bench and under 75 but I’d raise him to 85-90 half the time. I love the fact that I was so right about him, but the amount of times I saw him show so much potential during critical moments throughout prior seasons but not totally get those minutes due to little fouling mistakes or travels or just very minute things that made him better to only put in for a short period of time, just makes me so much more secure with my knowledge of basketball, i was genuinely banking on the fact that this Celtics team was unbelievably better than the previous Celtics team and when we came into the season so damn mid, I questioned myself but I also kind of came to a realization that this is bigger than just how good our team should be. Now that we’ve finally clicked and hit the point where we should’ve been all along I see exactly what I expected to see and it makes me so damn happy.

Well done on the analysis esp the selected clips to demonstrate yr pt. His improvement started from 2nd half of LY after Theis was traded & continues to impress. He's much calmer & rarely leaves his feet or try to block everything. He doesn't do verticality much as he just wait until the player commit himself & shoots, & then uses his quick & bouncy leap to swat. If he ever develops a long & reliable jumper, he'd be nightmore for other teams.

Its a bit concerning that he plays fewer minutes than horford. I hope the durability issues ease up like they did with embiid. I do think his passing skill is very noticeable in game, but a little unnecessary with his current skill set. Hes not going to be holding the ball in a threatening position too often. At least half of his offense is from put backs and lobs. Thats why his assists are a bit low despite that clear ability.

people would like to compare him to clint capella, all seriously if any of you watch his game. you would know timelord naturally have a good sense of positioning, relocating himself so teammates can find him, grab rebound with ease, so naturally have a good feel how on to use the backboard. good vision and able to make quick decision to pass the ball out should he gets overwhelm in the paint. can guard alot of position and his jump is really explosive to the point it often doesn't matter if guards have quicker first step, often he could recover to block the shot with ease. people like town would try to block every shot to the point where he tried to block a unnessary play where players is already shooting a very tough shots, so instead of boxing out town would go out of his way to block pointless shots like this, often leaving his man open for second chance. robert william doesn't do that. i believe robert william also leads the league for 2 season in blocking jumpshots.

He's only 6'9? Damn. He plays so much taller than that.

I wish he would train with KG and see if he can be shown a mid range shot to level up, he has a bit of Dennis Rodman for his timing on rebounds and blocks and his sync when moving with his playmaking and a bit of KG's Tenacity and motor, with a mid range jumper he would become one of the most dangerous big men in the league

If Robert Williams can stay healthy and keep improving, maybe develop a consistent 15-20 ft Jumper I’d say he could have a similar career to kg. It sounds ridiculous and I’m not saying rob will be anything close to kg, but the way he is able to guard around the perimeter and defend bigs and guards so well he definitely has some similarities. It would be great to see him develop a jump shot but anything more than what he’s giving us now is just a bonus. Just gotta stay healthy!

Three years ago we all thought Mitchell Robinson was better. Look at us now. I didn't see this development happening so quickly. Timelord is the best American born center in the league. Edit: He might only be 6'9" but his wingspan is well over 7 feet and he has maybe the biggest vertical of anyone his size. He's also very very strong. I've never noticed his height difference being any type of an issue.

Smart and Rob should at least be in talks for DPOY. Celtics has the best defence in the league right now because of them.

He would of been a star before 3s took the league over... All those blocks and he's not the primary post defender. They use Horford to defend down low, with Rob out on the perimeter alot.

Not really if he’s out in the perimeter that limits his weak side shot blocking. They put him baseline matched up on poor shooters so he can roam the paint and be in position to get those weak side blocks
