Saudi Arabia was was appointed chair of the United Nations’ top forum for women’s rights and gender equality, a controversial move that has been met with outrage. Critics have questioned Saudi Arabia's history of restricting women's rights. Saudi Arabia ranks 131 out of 146 countries on gender equality. Saudi officials have pointed to a “personal status” law established in 2022 as evidence of progress in women’s rights. But under that same law, a wife has to obey her husband in a “reasonable manners" while her husband’s financial support is dependent on the wife’s “obedience”. Does that sound progressive?
