The point of the Clone Wars wasn’t to tell a single cohesive story, it was to flesh out an era, while Rebels was focused entirely on the story of one rebel cell. I’d say both shows achieved their goals very well

I mean that is how it started sure but you can't tell me that the final episodes of season 5 weren't miles better than the "Shinies" episode. Like if you just watched the episodes with Anakin and Ashoka or the ones that directly setup something that payed off with them such as the first few episodes with Cade Bane overall the clone wars would probably be a better series. The little side stories and pretty much all of the first season are definitely the weakest parts of the series.

Honestly it bothers me when people say that animation as a medium is for kids, I'm in my mid 20s, and I have watched animated series, movies, as well as Anime, etc. My whole life and have been judged for it as I grew older. Animation as a medium isn't for kids, animation can be anything live action can be.

This right here. I remember the first time I showed my wife Howl's Moving Castle. "is this one of those animes"? she asked. She liked it. When Atla came to Netflix she watched it with me, mainly looking at her phone. Eventually the phone disappeared and we binged it in 2 days. While we aren't the biggest Rebels fans, we do live CW. Now she's really into opening her mind and trying out any medium. As long as the story is there. Hard judgment from her siblings, none from mine.

Also *spoiler alert*, Ahsoka Tano at the end is left at the end trying to find Ezra, which at the end of her arc could be considered as why she didn't want to take in Grogu. She was on a different path, which is why she demanded the location of Grand Admiral Thrawn at the end of her battle at the end. She wants to get Ezra back.

I feel like the real reason Ashoka is searching for Ezra is not only because they are friends, but because he saved her life, in the beginning of the show Ezra says to Zeb “I saved your life, you know in some places that means something” and I feel maybe Ashoka feels the same way, also Zeb’s rescue of Agent Kallus starts his path down defecting so these things mean something imo. This is only a theory though

@@wafflingmean4477 This. Ashoka is looking for Ezra because she needs his help to help her settle the battle of the force within her. She isn't at peace with the force yet and with what happened with Anakin. She has accepted that Anakin is Vader but that doesn't mean she has found peace with her choices and her role with his fall. I think part of why she is looking for ezra is that ashoka has never been tempted to fall (as far as we know), Ezra has, and has come very close to the darkness. I think resistance actually had the best 1st season out of TCW, Rebels, and Resistance. I don’t think the second season properly developed and built upon the first, but I’m going to partially attribute it to the fact that no one (including the writers) really knew what was going to happen in 9. The target demographic is a lot younger, but I really think people should give the first season another chance. Personally, I love Rebels, and I never found Ezra that annoying. One of my consistently favourite aspects of the show was that he kept escaping whenever he was caught in an imperial prison. And it wasn't necessarily because he was a Jedi, but because he never waited for someone to rescue him because growing up, he didn't have that option, he had to save himself or he was dead. Even after he met the Ghost crew and had a family that would come and save him, he still went out of his way to make it easy for them buy escaping his cells whenever they locked him in one. It was always fun to watch him escape.

The first few episodes are cheesy and goofy, but as it goes further, it really does get good and the characters, especially ezra, mature as the story advances and become well rounded and likeable people. I also love his little blaster saber 🥺 I was genuinely pissed when Vader destroyed it Ezra was so excited to show it to the rest of the crew and it was a geniunely wholesome "Guys come look what I made!" moment and he probably needed that since he hadn't gotten to have that experience with his birth parents in nearly a decade.

Exactly. Of course it wasn’t as good as Clone Wars but I understand the story of what Dave Filoni was trying to tell. :) I can understand Ezra being a bit annoying in some places but he still has character build up, he had an sad backstory of his parents being killed by the Galactic Empire, and some of his moments were memorable. :) He also trained to become a Jedi and learned how to lift stuff with a lot of effort unlike Rey the Mary Sue who had no training.🙄 Sabine was also a good character, a Mandalorian girl who also had a darker backstory about her family on Mandalore and the mistakes she made but also try to stop it but her family chose the Empire over her, I felt the same pain she had.🥺 That part gave me chills and made me care about her character even more.💖
@ValosiTiamata
@ValosiTiamata 3 жыл бұрын
Depending on your point of view, Rebels is actually darker and handles a lot of taboo topics Clone Wars avoided. For example, the heroes of Clone Wars were mostly hired help with no personal stake outside of sociopolitical interests. The Jedi were basically galactic cops who could have walked away if they so chose. The clone troopers initially didn't know they had options, and only really gained individual will over time. Meanwhile, every member of Rebels is a survivor who's lost everything. Canaan lost his master and the entire Jedi Order, suffering PTSD in the proocess. Ezra lost his family and had to rely on street smarts to survive. Sabine was essentially an outcast of her people who designed horrific weapons before realising what the Empire really stood for. Zev lost his entire race. Hera comes from a race that's doomed to be either slaves or thugs. Every one of them comes from a broken planet, making the Ghost family even more special. Unlike Ahsoka and Anakin, Ezra and Sabine tend to be cocky because they want to provoke the enemy. They know their limitations and while both can get annoying of end up in hot water, they don't put others at risk if they can help it. For me, the Clone Wars is a typical war series, with only a few of those UC Gundam moments where you actually feel loss (such as Ahsoka abandoning the Jedi Order). The also don't spend a lot of time showing all sides of the war. But in Rebels, the smaller focus makes you care about these people more dearly and you get to know the villains and their motivations. You really feel the loss alongside the characters when something happens, and there's a sense of danger you just don't feel in CW because every loss is so much more profound. Seeing one fighter destroyed and knowing the rebel cell only has 15 and about as many pilots hurts a lot more than a huge battle where 50 fighters carrying clones are blown up and immediately replaced by 100 more. Also, while the animation style is still a bit off-putting, I find it higher quality than in CW, and that probably has to do largely with the more limited amount of assets required per scene. Fewer asserts means faster rendering and far fewer polygons, so more time and effort can be spent on each model. Clone Wars will always be better for some, but it's more about large-scale war than individual characters. It fills a gap and tells many stories that intertwine with the only really relatable character being Ahsoka. But for others like myself, the more intimate nature, higher stakes, and greater focus on main characters (on both sides) makes it the more mature of the two shows. I really hope Bad Batch is able to go more of a Rebels route and keep the tone more intimate, because both the title group and Tarkin deserve a lot of love that can't be told in a generic war story.

@Tom Ffrench The thing is, the legends Thrawn is probably too much for kids said by Disney standards while the new Thrawn is a much rounded character. Imagine if Rebels isn't all goofy and plot armor and the Stormtroopers like in Rogue One really hit the characters it would've been different. We do see glimpses of legends Thrawn like when he ordered to open fire on Vult Skerris when Thrawn saw the danger planning by Hera but his ruthlessness is toned down. In legends, Thrawn would annihilate everyone of them if he got the chance than pulling them apart piece by piece. Well, he did that but without plot armor no S4 I guess. Monster Thrawn would unite them first then have a pincer tactic to stop them from leaving the system.

I didn’t start watching the animated SW shows until 2015. I binged The Clone Wars series in a month and I was hooked. Then I Started watching Rebels. I enjoyed the hell out of that series. I loved Kanan’s and Ezra’s relationship and watching the formation of the Rebel cell. The show shines whenever it dives into the lore of the force, the Jedi and the sith. I would tell skeptics of the show that they were missing out on some great lore material. Like you I grew to appreciate SW animation. So much so I divided right into SW resistance. Resistance wasn’t as good as TCW and Rebels. But it did have it’s moments. I think it suffered from being an a era of Star Wars that most fan’s soured on after TLJ. Resistance was the most kid friendly of the three animated series. Lastly it couldn’t take any real deep dives into the lore. As the story had little connection to the Jedi, force and Sith. I don’t think Resistance needed the Sith or Jedi to be successful. But to replace that it needed the story to be larger, the stakes higher. Resistance never gave you that. With Rebels the stakes got higher and higher with each season. Without spoiling anything those higher stakes payoff in a big way in that final season. And then Rebles does what any great show does with it’s finale. Leaving you wanting more. So when you say Rebels is better than Clone wars. I definitely can see your point. I think their both great for different reasons. Both are different types of story telling. Awesome review and break down. Look forward to your review of the series as a whole. Specifically your thoughts on Thrawn and his fate. How does this could connect to not only the Mandalorian but to the upcoming Ahsoka series. I also wonder, depending on the fate of Ezra and Thrawn. Will they or can they be apart of this story that will tie all the Disney Plus Star Wars Series together. I would love to hear your thoughts on those topics.

I literally grew up watching Rebels, it came out just after I became a star wars fan. I still remember waiting for Saturdays (it always aired saturday in my country) to come so that I could watch a new episode, and I remember myself crying at the end. Same I became a star wars fan, 1 years before or even the years of Rebels season 1. I was able to go to the theater premiere of the first episodes and I just loved it. It's funny to find someone who was looking forward to Saturday for that too. Unfortunately after season 2 I ended up dropping out because the episodes were not (in my memory) really in order on TV. And it's only with the Mandalorian series that I decided to dive back into it (yes the last 3 Star Wars movies had disgusted me a little from the franchise) and it's just still still better then it was in my memories,... I watches it in like 3 day (I still have to watch the season 4). All the characters, scenario ans the universe are cool. It's the star wars I like

In rebels I find that the stormtroopers are reduced to faceless cannon fodder yet again but this time it feels even worse. Western adult audiences have an inherent bias against animation. Because Disney animation is such a building block of many of our childhoods we get programmed that animation means kids. Other cultures use animation in film and TV all the time, it’s just another medium to tell a story. Not at all. The animation for Clone Wars was dirty and had a lot of jagged edges. Characters could look appropriately menacing and evil. With Rebels everything is just too cute. Well, that started with Hanna-Barbera. Cartoons used to be the appetizer shown before the main feature at non-kid movies. That's why the old Disney and Warner Brother cartoons from the 40s are filled with adult humor. But with the advent of TV and the fact that kids love animated shows, Hanna-Barbera figured out a way to make cheap, animated content geared toward kids. And thus animated features became for kids. The exception to the rule are the Pixar films. For whatever reason, those got a pass as family things rather than just being kid things.

It rewatches really well. I had a bit more love for it than you shared when it aired, but it was still one of those things that I watched mostly out of obligation until it got to Seasons 3 and 4, but when I rewatched the whole show, all the little pieces you think are pointless or episodes that feel like filler turn out not to be and there's a whole lot to love about the show when you're able to see it all come together. It still misses the mark in some areas, I find that the Season 4 Mandalore episodes to be quite disappointing after having built up so much hype over not only this show but Clone Wars before it got its proper conclusion, they're some of the weakest episodes, but that could be explained as pushing all the budget into the back end of Season 4 because that's when everything all culminates from all the other Seasons and makes the show shine. If you can handle it, try giving it a rewatch, I was surprised at how well it does the first time I did.

Those absolutely exist in Clone Wars due to it being an anthology series, although I wouldn't so much call them filler as more just failed experiments. There are a few arcs that don't connect to anything aside from taking place during the Clone Wars and that's all they're going to be. That's not to say there are not still episodes that feel that way in Rebels, it's all a matter of opinion, but in the long run, I found there to really only be two or three really pointless episodes in all of Rebels' run.

It ties things together like school glue and macaroni. The only cool part is the time period in general, and the way the characters we know from before have been affected. Every shot is people just walking around in circles, dodging blaster bolts, and fighting in practically slow motion. Nothing creative happens. Remember in Clone Wars, when they put ATTEs on an asteroid? Or when they had entire episodes underwater? Or when we got to see dynamic and suspenseful space combat? Hey Eck! Great video! I'm about half way through season 3 myself, decided to go through the Clone Wars and Rebels again a couple months ago. Rebels has always reminded me of mid-90's CGI cartoons. The look and feel is the same, but the choreography and movement is fantastic. It's like someone took what they wished those 90's cartoons could have aspired to. The detail they gave to that final fight scene on Tatooine is amazing. The stances, they way they shift just a little. It's almost like they're fighting and reminiscing at the same time. It really shows the wisdom Ben acquired learning from his old master's force ghost over the years. Great video! Keep them coming!

What if Ahsoka (or anyone else) met herself in the past or changed past events? What if someone is killed in that place? Do they just disappear in the "real" SW Universe forever? And that's just some of the problems that might happen. As you can see, time travel can create big paradoxes, change certain pre-established events and I'm not even talking about how it can diminish the feeling of loss when a character dies because anyone can just come back to life being rescued by a person in the World between Worlds.

Yes, but still watchable. Sometimes I feel like people shit on Rebels, only because it was made by Disney. It is actually really good show.

Resistance explored some interesting stuff but if it was longer and season 2 didn't had pointless filler then it would have been almost as good as rebels

@@orbaitv5991 just like rebels, its literally just filler. HOW CAN YOU GUYS BE ENTERTAINED? I got bored after the 2nd episode.

Is it strange that one of my favorite moments of Rebels is finally getting to see Royal Guards in action? Oh, and Thrawn...

I am a older fan with seeing the OT as they came out and I enjoyed the series. One of my kids' friends lent us the DVD and I was happily surprised. Kanan because of his flaws has made him my favorite Jedi out of both canon and Legends. I like flawed characters as you can tell with my favorite Legends is Cade.

I started rewatching Rebels with my girl last week(her first time). Honestly great storytelling. Where clone wars was a Great War story rebels was a great coming of age story about becoming something bigger than yourself.
