UPDATE: In his first day in office, Joe Biden signed an Executive Order that adopts the latest Supreme Court ruling's more expansive inclusion of LGBTQ rights under sex discrimination protections. This reverses Trump's rulings.
Without federal legislation, the fight against LGBTQ discrimination has been waged in the courts and the White House.
Watch more 2020 US election explainers at vox.com/Electio....
The US Civil Rights Act of 1964 originally protected against discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, and religion. But in a failed political maneuver meant to make the bill so unpopular that it wouldn’t pass, the word “sex” was added as well. That addition protected women from being discriminated against at work, but it also set off a 50-year legal battle over whether the law also protects LGBTQ Americans.
The court has reached a decision in this battle, but the Trump White House has come to a different conclusion. And that means there are huge stakes for LGBTQ rights in the 2020 election.
This was the eighth in our series of 2020 election explainers, all based on viewer suggestions. Watch the others, which cover the stakes of the election on:

@@enriquecerrosthe vast majority of Canadians do not mind being called "socialists" by our American neighbours. Canada chooses leaders who tend to have fairly progressive platforms - maybe not Scandinavian level progressive, but progressive relatively speaking nonetheless. I have never once heard a single Canadian in my life complain about having universal healthcare... It's just a matter of common sense and human decency. Racism exists in this country, just like in any other country, but even when it does exist, it's not blatantly overt. It's almost always low-key and inconspicuous. That doesn't justify it, but there's pretty much universal condemnation when a racist incident occurs - and you can bet there's no condoning from politicians or institutions. Having said that, some provinces are worse than others when it comes to this type of racism, and Quebec (with the exception of Montreal possibly) is usually perceived to be one of the worst offenders in that regard. All in all, we have our faults and bad people, but they're an OVERWHELMING minority. And we more or less trust our leaders to speak out against these behaviours and call them out swiftly and publicly. Personally, I'm very proud to be a Canadian and very happy I'm on this side of the border...

I’ve never understood why laws differ from state to state so drastically in America. Your one country. Why can you all follow the same rules. You’re all citizens.

This goes back to the founding of the country in which the thirteen states saw themselves as thirteen independent states that were in a defensive alliance, not as a single nation. When that system resulted in economic and political chaos, a new constitution was drafted in the 1780s to create some harmony among the states by creating a federal government that could pass laws about certain areas of policy that would then be uniform across the states. However, law-making on all other areas of policy is reserved for the states. That's the constitution we use to this day.

An often overlooked reason is that the national government has been stuck in pretty much equal power lock that prevents anything from getting done, while more slanted state legislatures can pump out bills

What we really need is for Congress to introduce and pass actual legislation that protects civil rights. That way, we don't have to continue to depend on the courts to expand the meaning of our laws through judicial review, and we don't have to risk those rights being taken away once the makeup of the court or the White House changes
