Why Luke and Obi-Wan have almost identical lightsabers: the prop for Luke's Jedi lightsaber is the same hero prop Alec Guinness used in A New Hope.

It’s heart warming too, Obi-Wan was like family to Luke.

I remember hearing of a legends canon story of Luke traveling back to Tantooine and finding the green kyber crystal of Qui-Gon Jinn amongst Obi-Wan's keep sakes along with the lightsaber schematics and using that as the crystal for his lightsaber. I like that idea better because I feel like it shows that Obi-Wan still kept a piece of his master with him and it makes Luke saber a little more symbolic.

His crystal was synthetic but Disney scrapped that so the green crystal was from Qui-Gon Jinn's lightsaber

I believed that the reason Luke’s lightsaber was almost exactly like Obi-Wans is because he was honoring Obi-Wan just like Obi-Wan built his first lightsaber like Qui-Gon Jinns lightsaber

I always thought it was Luke paying respect to Obi-Wan by designing his lightsaber like he did, that and I always thought he got the parts from Obi-Wan home on Tatooine. I will admit it is one of my top five favourite lightsabers along side Obi-Wan's last, Darth Vader's, Rahm Kota's ( I just love the rugged simplicity of it ) and Count Dooku's, which knocked Qui-gon's to 6th place :-) Anyway it was an interesting video and I wish you the best of luck.

Qui-Gon Jinn and Luke Skywalker we’re both Jedi who used green lightsabers, and were related to Obi-Wan in some way. One freed Anakin from slavery, and the other freed him from the Sith, turning him into a Jedi.

I like it because #1, it was LUKES. It was a nice combination of ObiWan's design, QuiGon's crystal ObiWan left for him, and with it showing honor to his heritage, it was HIS... AND Vader could look at it and recognize EVERYTHING about it.... which is why he always said, "ObiWan has taught you well". Vader KNEW ObiWan was still out there, even AFTER he struck him dow. The comics even show examples of HOW Anakin LEARNED how to retain his identity or become one with the Force upon death. Aaaah, I love Star Wars!! lol It's back to being FUN to think and theorize again! I've missed these days!

I think it's pretty well accepted that in the new canon, Luke used Qui Gon's crystal to craft his green light saber. Considering synthetic crystals are no longer canon. Personally I'm a bit torn. I liked the synthetic red crystals, but the bleeding thing is also kinda amazing.

The actual reason is that they re-used the hilt from A New Hope.

Nice job! I never knew all this. I remember once reading someone saying “a Jedi’s lightsaber usually strongly resembles their master’s” but this makes complete sense.

Hands down my favorite hilt was Obi Wan's saber in Ep IV. Whenever I think of his line "the lightsaber is an elegant weapon" I always think of his. The tapered and stepped neck is such an iconic design.

Luke's green lightsaber is my favorite, it symbolized his evolution into a Jedi. In ROTJ it was the first time Luke wielded his own weapon and not his father's saber so it further displayed his growth as both a Jedi and person.

Yeah, the part about there being 3 crystals in most sabers is especially wrong, even in Legends. I have the book Star Wars Lightsabers: A Guide to the Weapons of the Force right in front of me. It's currently only semi-canon, as a couple of things have changed since 2010 namely the term Kyber Crystal is new, and Sith no longer have Synthetic Crystals, but outside of those two, it's almost completely Canon, and it *is* 100% Legends compliant. In both Legends as well as Canon, every saber had at least 2 crystals: a Primary Crystal that is NOT a Kyber Crystal, and a Focusing Crystal, which IS a Kyber Crystal, and which produces the blade color. While there *was* sabers that contained more than one Crystal, Ki-Adi-Mundi, Kit Fisto, Darth Maul (this one is unique as it's *not* a Dual Phase saber that allows length/width adjustments), and Darth Vader being the most famous examples, Obi-Wan has NEVER owned a multi-Kybered saber. His saber has always used a single Adegan Crystal.

actually... from the visual dictionary. Jedis would make their lightsabers similar to their master's. No two lightsabers are the same (at the time when the book came out). Lightsabers contained a primary and focusing crystal.

For Disney Canon, I think Luke used the crystal from Qui-Gon's lightsaber as some new Disney material shows Obi-Wan having his lightsaber as well on Tatooine. Personally, I prefer the Legends version of how Luke built his own lightsaber.

I like both of the hilts. The modification design of lukes lightsaber is based off of obi wan kenobi's lightsaber hilt because the journal and inside of the journal explains how to construct a lightsaber hilt and full lightsaber with kyber crystal inside the hilt. Obviously this is very simple to explain and go into depth. Luke got his kyber crystal from obi-wan kenobi's old master. Qui gon jinn's kyber crystal. Luke used this crystal to construct and finish his new weapon of defense. And thus he completely became the full rank of jedi knight. But would you imagine if luke never lost his hand on bespin and still had his father's original lightsaber hilt and sword of denfense. That right there would be a different path and a different solution to luke losing his hand but his sword too. A what if topic yes.

I like to believe that the Padawan often takes inspiration from their masters lightsaber when they create their own, which is why more often then not most masters and apprentices have similar lightsabers :)) Just my little theory :3

My favorite lightsaber is Count Dooku's. It's the most elegant looking with a curved hilt for the precision needed for form II makashi, and the blade guard piece at the end of the hilt.

Apparently now Luke's saber has Qui-Gon Jinn's crystal, I personally love that idea since it gives a since of lineage.

One thing to also note is that the lightsaber prop used in Return of the Jedi was the same one Alec Guinness used in the scene with Darth Vader in A New Hope.

One theory on the Kyber Crystal suggests that the Crystal was the one that was in Qui-Gon Jinn's lightsaber which was in possession of Obi-Wan Kenobi since Qui-Gon's death on Naboo

Real world reason. Obi-Wan's lightsaber was made from a jet engine part, WW1 rifle grenade, M2 Browning MG part, camera flashgun parts, sink handle and some washers, transistors, nuts, and a piece of all-thread. For filming the saber fights, they machined a couple of 'stunt' sabers. Ever since I was a little kid, something about the design of Obi-Wan’s Lightsaber design was always really cool to me, so that explains why I’ve always liked Luke’s ROTJ Lightsaber equally to Obi-Wan’s. I think it’s cool how Luke modeled his own Lightsaber after his fallen master’s though. It definitely makes sense given his situation and lack of resources.

There’s nothing that can beat Luke’s ROTJ lightsaber. The shade of Green, the ignition sound. The more vicious hum the blade makes. I love the idea of Luke using Qui-Gon’s crystal for his own lightsaber. It truly brings everything full-circle; it was my head canon for awhile. It makes sense, and it really makes it more empathic to me, that he used his master’s master’s Crystal to make what would ultimately solidify him as a Jedi Knight

There's a recent Canon statue of Hermet Obi-Wan and he has a backpack on with Anakin and Qui-Gon's lightsabers strapped to the back. To me it would make sense to use Qui-Gon's green crystal

In the real world this was a stunt prop used by Sir Alec. The difference is that Obi-One's hero prop was made in part from the heat shield of a WW2 Italian machine gun while Luke's used a WW2 British machine gun. Due to the number of war films made at that time there were lots of these gun parts knocking around the prop stores. Although unprovable it could be the Italian gun was one used by a UNIT soldier in 'Doctor Who' that was destroyed by a Dalek. The original trilogy used the same theatrical armourer as 'Doctor Who' hence a modified Dalek gun being used by Ponda Baba and later recreated for 'The Mandelorian'

I always assumed Luke's lightsaber was constructed to honor obi-wan and anikan. Since the top half looks similar to obi-wan's but the bottom half looks like anakin's. I just figured it was to honor the two jedis that played a role in his life. Granted anakin didnt teach him anything, but he is his father and yoda played a big role too, but there was never any mention of Yoda's lightsaber during that time frame so really luje only saw 2 lightsabers (not including vaders). So it made sense to combine the looks of the two lightsabers he ever saw (again not counting vaders)

Adding on i had darth maul lightsaber and obi wan lightsaber as a kid. I wish i remember what happen to them. As they are worth a lot of money now. My favorite was darth vader ligjtersaber and i also had Luke's lightsaber. My brother had mace and Yoda lightsaber as well. Darth vader definitely my favorite.

I think Dave and Jon should change the backstory and have Luke use Qui Gon Gin’s lightsaber crystal instead. It’ll be amazing to see a scene in a future live action series where Luke learns all about Qui Gon, Obi Wan, and Anakin from Obi Wan’s journal and discovers Qui Gon’s lightsaber in Obi’s hut.

Its crazy looking at the footage of luke turning on or holding and battleing with his lightsaber, it looks like it has weight to it. Like when he turns it on in those bushes on endor hes holding the hilt and then when he egnites it he lifts the hilt up slitly causing the end of the blade to move slightly after he moves the hilt up words causing it to kind of teeter a little bit. And when hes reflecting lazer bolts on the ship above the sandmonster thing it gets reflected backwards when each bolt hits . Its incredible realistic looking. I wonder if it was on accident or lucas told him to do that.

Luke's Lightsaber is one of my favorite designs, but is outdone only by Dooku's and Palpatine's.
