Vegeta was ssj2 already. The majin boost most likely brought him closer to SSJ3 than goku anticipated.

For everyone who does not know. Without the Majin Boost, Vegeta could have transformed into SSJ2. Vegeta achieved the transformation during the time span between Cell and Majin Saga during that 10-year period. Vegeta watched the battle between Yakkon and Goku, which led him to let Badidi turn him into a Majin. He realized that his SSJ2 was not on par with Goku's SSJ2.

It's actually stated in the daizenshuu that Vegeta got it through training

Vegeta beat Goku every time they fought (with an asterisk in the Buu saga fight, Goku had his back turned and was led to believe the fight was over. And no, Goku having the ability to go SSJ3 doesn't change the outcome, Goku never used it in the fight so it's not applicable to the fight) Transforming in to the ape in the Saiyan Saga isnt a loss for Vegeta, every other transformation in the series is considered just a part of the fight, so why not the ape? Vegeta beat Goku, Gohan beat Vegeta, albeit by Vegeta's own action. Vegeta has always been the better fighter too. He let his pride and ego get in the way of training throughout Z, yet he was able to get stronger, transform all by his own will. He relied on zenkai boosts during Namek, refused to train with Trunks in the chamber during Cell yet was still able to achieve what he did. He reached God without the ritual Goku needed, and hit Blue just as easily as Goku. And now he's been training with Whis, he's Goku's equal, even beat him in the Broly movie. Goku has been one step ahead because of his training, not anymore. Vegeta needs his flowers, his own hubris was his problem early on, yet hes still kept up and equalled Goku. If he trained like Goku did the entiretime, he'd probably have been stronger the entire time.

All I know is Vegeta has bested Goku more times than lost to him and even the lastest DBS manga chapter shows he bested him in their latest duel 😂😂

You know what’d be funny? Goku restrains his SS2 form and then battles Vegeta going all out at SSJ2 and let’s him win. Vegeta feels overjoyed that he won and never lets Goku live it down for the rest of the day. Then right before Goku goes back to the other world, he transforms into SSJ3 in front of Vegeta just to humble him

You gave a title yet you didn't explain when did he become SSJ2. I am assuming it's of course in the 7 years time skip during training when exactly is unknown. It could be he achieved the form shortly before the events of the Boo arc (An arc of 2 days which I always found insane). Had they fought in the tournament, I think Kakarrot would still conceal SSJ3 and use Kaioken on top of SSJ2 if needed and use it to throw Bejita out of the ring. Bejita was not worth it to shorten his time on Earth.

The only statement that could be taken as Vegeta NOT having ssJ2 was when he watched Goku kill Yakkon. But this wasn't a literal statement that Goku had SSJ2 and Vegeta did not. I always took it that Vegeta was relatively shocked just how casually used the power in that moment. Given how far behind he was in the Cell games, he had to really train hard to become as powerful as Gohan was against Cell. I feel like when he saw how stagnated Gohan was it made him furious as he trains incredibly hard and he never considered Goku coming back. Gohan was likely a benchmark for him and to see him so weak really pissed him off.

Vegeta already unlocked ssj2, there was just a power gap in the power of their forms which is why Vegeta needed Babidi’s magic

Even without the Majin Boost Vegeta could close the gap, with Super Saiyan 2 Grade 2.

Umm….Vegeta already beat him in the saiyan saga

He was ssj2 he just knew goku had it as well but assumed he had perfected it in the same way he did ssj1 and therefore knows he has to go to another level to have a chance as he also had perfect ssj2 and they would be even if not goku potentially having the advantage so he knew he needed an edge on him to secure the victory.

Vegeta was very angry against Gokû to learn he hide SSJ3 when he see this transformation with Enma. If here Gokû doesn't use SSJ3 or even SSJ2 Full Power, Vegeta would have the same reaction but later, when he keeps training after the tournament and see that his SSJ2 can be improved even more and when he discovers SSJ3. Gokû is already stronger than Vegeta after Cell saga and Gokû always train hardly in afterlife, there's no reason for Vegeta to think Gokû isn't capable of what Vegeta can already do. So for me, at the beginning of the fight in the tournament, Vegeta would probably ask Gokû to break this rule of "No SSJ", and ask him to use all this power, because Vegeta prefers lose against Gokû's Full Power, rather than win against and heavily suppressed Gokû. So it's very probable that Gokû reveals first his SSJ2 Full Power against Vegeta, so Vegeta can see he stands no chance. And Gokû finish to show SSJ3, reduce his time in Earth, finish the fight very fast with a Vegeta, frustrated to lose and to not be as strong as Gokû and to not be able to have SSJ3 yet, but happy that Gokû use all his power against him, to have a last real and fair fight in 1v1. His rivalry become all friendship, Vegeta knows SSJ3 exist and train for it to protect Earth for the rest of his life, with Gohan and others. Gokû says farewell for good to his friends and family, and leaves, to keep training in afterlife for eternity, wait for his friends and family to join him when they die. For me this is the most probable scenario if Gokû and Vegeta have their real fight in the tournament after defeat Dabra and Babidi with Gohan (+ Buu still sleeping or dead before birth).

I knew vegeta had gotten ss2 prior to majin But do you think even with the power difference between goku and vegeta in ss2 (without the majin boost) that vegeta out of grit etc could’ve gotten another win over goku?

Majin is ssj2 thats how he was able to access it after he died and came back in the buu saga

Goku and Vegeta are respecting eachother as saiyan warriors by that point in the Buu saga, Vegeta's influence is a huge part of what made Goku start to appreciate his saiyan side. I don't think Goku would ever consider holding back to falsely feed Vegeta's ego, Goku genuinely has faith in him and sees him as an equal rival and not a friend that needs consoling. Vegeta would be far more hurt if he realised Goku was holding back to save his feelings, as would Goku if Vegeta had a secret upper hand that he wasn't using it. Both men want the best fight they can get, their goal isn't exactly to "win" because after they win, they just want the next big challenge, so they probably wouldn't lie to eachother with that mutual understanding of why they are fighting.

I think Goku in SS1 could have defeated non-Majin SS2 Vegeta. Sure, Vegeta would definitely have the power edge, but with Goku having an after-life body alongside "only" remaining in SS1, he would have a tremendous stamina advantage. I don't think Vegeta mastered SS2 enough to the point of being able to fight a long, enduring battle. When they actually fought, I believe it was his enhancement from the Majin state that allowed him to not only match SS2 Goku's power but also granted him the extra endurance. Think of it like 17 vs Piccolo or 18 vs Vegeta. But yeah, imagine how SS2 Vegeta's pride would shatter if he lost to SS1 Goku lol.

Ok to make this quick. Vegeta said to Goku powering up in their fight that at least you’re stronger than your son in the cell games and then proceeded to power up with Majin ssj2. This only leads me to believe Vegeta was already on par with Goku ssj2 but Majin surpassed Goku in ssj2 form Gokus demeanor and surprise at Vegetas power level leads me to believe he surpassed Goku in ssj2 power. If you look throughout in the later arcs in super Vegeta always surpasses Goku in their same forms like ssjb Vegeta going to blue evolution trains harder on his form kind of like a guy that practices one kick vs 1000. Goku obtains new abilities and techniques to unlock new forms. So when it comes to base form or equal forms i think Vegeta takes the lead. Id say Gokus ssj1 was better and maybe the ssj3 and ssjg were better than Vegeta

Vegeta's SSJ2 BEFORE Majin being cell saga Gohan level? I don't think so. DEFINITELY higher than that, by a wide margin. Why? Vegeta had not yet fully powered up yet in majin form when he commented that "at least you're stronger than your son was" - like that was a joke of a milestone now. He didn't KNOW his own max - same as Gohan not knowing HIS own max before going Ultimate Gohan for the first time - he was SURPRISED, which proves DBZ characters do not just automatically KNOW their max level when they get a power boost. Vegeta was comparing his OWN power to Goku's, and only THEN does he power up and surprise Goku with how strong he has become. PLUS, Vegeta and Goku both indicated that Daborah would not be that tough, and Vegeta pre-majin was VERY confident he could beat him. Daborah is around SSJ2 Gohan / Super Perfect Cell level - we know he's stronger than GOKU was back then because Goku thinks if they fought hiim 7 years ago he'd give them a hard time - THEM, as a group - and Vegeta after witnessing his power is VERY certain he can kill him in maybe a minute or so. He's also very disappointed at how weak Gohan is - and it's not that Gohan's POWER dropped that much - we SEE that he still has SSJ2 AND that his power alone is about HALF the amount needed to revive Buu to full power - which means Gohan has, you can say, half the power of fat buu in him at that point - the same fat buu that proved STRONGER than majin Vegeta and fought SSJ3 Goku head-to-head and found it fun. Granted Goku was holding back on buu, but SSJ3 is 4x stronger than SSJ2, so it is unlikely that Gohan's max power at tht point is THAT far behind Goku and Vegeta - maybe 50% of them rather than where he WOULD be if he kept his training up. And Vegeta in the cell saga was not THAT far behind Goku, who fought Cell fairly evenly - he ws probably 70% to 80% Goku's level after 2 turns in the time chamber, IF he had ever fully powered up. Which he didn't. Cell was VERY nearly even with Goku but lost power morr gradually, and SSJ2 Gohan was about 2x as strrong as Cell or Goku, or 230% stronger than Vegeta at the time. They ROUTINELY become EXPONENTILLY stronger in one year, much less 7 years - so for Vegeta to ONLY get a bit over twice as strong in 7 years is obscene. Even if he hit a plateau due to training on earth, he's likely going to at least double his strength year after year. Meaning he should logically be EXPONENTIALLY strronger than Gohan was back then, which is backed up by how easiliy he is certain he can kill Daborah. ALL evidence points to Vegeta already being WAY beyond Gohan's cell saga level. Gohan himself I dont think actually got weaker so much as he forgot how to tap INTO the power, which is why when his energy is draine out it's huge - enough to equal half fat buu's strength, which itself is a bit stronger than majin Vegeta - meaning Gohan was maybe tapping INTO 10 or 20% of his actua potential at that point - barely a SSJ2 but with the power to be higher level than what he showed against Daborah, who was instantly taken out by Buu.

This took too long to get to the main point. You barely mentioned the use of SS2 like he was ready to go.

vageta did have ssj2 prior to majin possession. he only allowed himself to be possessed because he knew goku was on a different level after the yakon fight and the majin possession would put him on equal footing. vageta literally admits this during their fight in the manga AND anime

I really don’t believe the majin thing did anything exceptional for vegeta power level If anything it did a small ( almost insignificant boost ) which wasn’t needed in the first place Some translations online suggest that Vegeta wanted to be under badidi’s orders just for the fact that his spell awakens the evil within his heart and vegeta needed this because according to him the emotions he’d developed for others are preventing him from using his maximum fighting potential Vegeta and goku both turned ssj2 without breaking a sweat

I think Goku saved vegeta, by not gonna ss3, vegeta was loosing his shit see how strong goku got in other world, if he new about ss3 too soon he would have let babidi take full control to access more power. He quit who knows how long for after goku passed, there is a video somewhere on this and it makes so much sense how it’s explained.

Unless Goku straight up turned SSJ 3 infront of him, I think Vegeta would 100% still try to fight him. He'd probably hope he can use technique to overcome the power gap. I say unless Goku went SSJ 3 infront of him, because that's a gap he could never hope to close just by fighting smarter, given SSJ 3 was more or less equal to Kid Buu and, even after having his power unlocked by Babidi, Vegeta was getting beaten to a bloody pulp by Kid Buu.
