Everyone fails. Even the great Bob Newhart. He beat the odds by having two very successful series with his name on them. But the third time wasn't the charm. Find out why his show “Bob” failed.

Bob Newhart actually did another series after “Bob”. In the 1997-1998 season, he starred in “George & Leo” on CBS and it lasted even fewer episodes than “Bob” did. It co-starred Judd Hirsch and Jason Bateman and only ran for 22 episodes.

Funny, I just came across that this evening when KZfaq put it up as a suggestion. I vaguely remembered it when I saw Judd Hirsch.

And Bob Newhart noted that he had had a show called Bob Newhart, a show called Newhart, and a show called Bob. So the only thing left was to call any new show George and Leo. 🤣🤣

Bob’s real first name is George, so technically his fourth sitcom also included a reference to his name in it.

Yes, I remember My World and Welcome to It. I liked it for the stories and the originality of mixing drawings with live action. I wondered it was cancelled outside the usual low ratings. An explanation would be nice.

It was too expensive to make a 30-minute live action/animated hybrid for television 22 times a year. There’s a reason Disney spaced them out every six or seven years.

I did watch both seasons of Bob back when it was on. I was interested because it took place in the world of comics, and I was collecting back then. I even bought the tie-in Mad Dog comics, which were split into two parts, one with Bob's original vision for the character, and one with Harlan's gritty re-boot vision. I kind of wish they had been able to make the first season setting work, I thought it had potential.

I loved that second season of 'Bob'. I also loved the show 'George and Leo'. Honestly CBS didn't keep shows around much back then unless they were immediate hits. With established performers like Bob Newhart and Mary Tyler Moore, the network should have backed their later efforts instead of dropping them so fast. Of course ABC did the same with Lucille Ball.

The problem with Bob the series was the fact they tried to change Newhart's character, and that failed miserably. The show had a strange running gag of Bob always losing his temper, but they always hid the outburst using various tricks because everyone knew Newhart couldn't pull it off. So, I guess that's the joke? Oh, and you are correct: the character of Harlan Stone was an absolute arse, and his departure was the best thing about the second season. Aside from Newhart, the best thing about the show was Cynthia Stevenson, who I first saw on this wonderful spoof on talk shows, "My Talk Show." Which I still maintain should have lasted a lot longer. She almost looked like she could have been Bob's daughter - always underplaying, but always showing there's a lot more behind the mask. Then they changed the entire series, totally removed what was interesting about the show, but brought in Betty White. And that last is never a bad thing. Shame working in a greeting card factory wasn't that entertaining, IMO. But the second version actually still had a comic book connection: Eric Allan Kramer was a regular, and he once played Thor in The Incredible Hulk Returns. I want My World and Welcome To It to be released on home video. What's taking so long?!!

I remember the first iteration of "Bob" and like you, I didn't think the show worked all that well. But then about half to two-thirds the way through the season I saw it click. It took a little time, but it was starting to gel when it got taken off the air. I only saw the first episode of the second iteration, so I can't say anything about that. But as mentioned by at least one other commenter, Bob's original show back in 1961 lasted only one season, but it won an Emmy for Best Comedy. The only best comedy Emmy any show starring Bob Newhart ever got. What made it work so well was something that wasn't Newhart's forte, sketch comedy. His own irreverence combined with his lackluster attempt to play different characters which were just him was hilarious. But the ratings were not great and the producers of the show didn't like Bob, so it got cancelled.

I remember the "My World" show, barely. I had recently started high school in the fall of 1969. My freshman year English class was- English Literature. The teacher was very high on that show and praised William Windom, and very much suggested that we her students, should all watch it. I gave it a slight try but after an episode or two couldn't take it anymore. I much better remember 1992's "Bob" and tried very much to get into it. Didn't fully love it, however.

As Bob got older, his sitcom wives got successively younger. In The Bob Newhart Show (1972), Suzanne Pleshette (born 1937) was eight years younger. In Newhart (1982), Mary Frann (born 1943) was fourteen years younger. And in Bob (1992), Carlene Watkins (born 1952) was twenty-three years younger.

I have noticed that. We were watching an episode from Bob last night and he mentioned he'd "waited 26 years" to hear her say "Bobby Bear," because he'd slept overnight in the hospital with her after the birth of their daughter. He was about 64 when he did that episode.. I think he was playing a much younger character. One thing he has going for him is that he really doesn't look much different than he did from his first series.

It's too bad CBS wouldn't give this show as much time to gel as they did Newhart. That show also had problems. Jennifer Holmes was gone after the first season. Steven Kampmann was gone after the second. It seems now if a show isn't a hit instantly, it gets killed with no time to work out the bugs. No wonder tv turned to crap, it's almost impossible to be perfect right out of the gate.

My memory of "Bob" was mainly that it focused on comics because I have been a cartoon drawer all my life. I seem to recall Bob featuring Dick Martin of "Rowan and Martin." I believe legendary comic artist Jack Kirby made an appearance as well. I also recall "My World and Welcome to It" although I was a pre-teen at the time. Please do a presentation on that show if possible.

They used to give a new show a lot longer to work it seems if its a former successful actor, the time is even shorter and less new shows per season people take a while to acculamate to a new show let alone a new one with fewer episodes and writers and actors getting used to each other and thier characters.

I do remember this show. I'm a comic book fan, so I was all primed to like it. However, it was very lackluster and not funny. I was not a fan. In your video, you mentioned to show, "My World and Welcome to It". I did love that show. It was very unusual and starred one of my favorite actor, William Windom. It was worth watching for him alone, but the premise of the show was very fun, for me. I would be delighted if you made a video about it.

Retooling an old star for a new generation and this was just 2 year after his last show ended. Especially associating it with fad or a current trend. Sometimes the concept works if it has a different star and better execution for instance: take something like Hammerman, a show about a rapping superhero with magic shoes that talked I thought that was pretty cool as a kid, but it would have been sooo much better if Hammer wasn't involved and it had better animation.

Truth is, the shownsimply did not reallybfit bob newhart. Look at his first two shows - the setup was he was a guy who wouodnhave peoplencome to him he couod react to. Psychiatrist or innkeeper it was a way to funnel people to him. But as a comic book artist he cant quite be that. That is a scenario for ancharacter a lot more active than newharts reactiveness.
