On today’s Alternative to Meds Podcast, host Debbie Nelson is delighted to welcome Dr. David Wiss to discuss the importance of nutrition during recovery.
As an accomplished dietitian, Dr. Wiss has found a powerful correlation between poor health and poor nutrition. His goal is to bridge the current gap between mental and physical health by pushing people to focus on how adequate nutrition can improve them both. Join Alternative to Meds Center as we discuss how your nutrition plays a fundamental role in your journey of recovery.
Your Personal Relationship With Food
Nelson notes that your relationship with food is just as important as your relationship with your family. Consider the fact that you eat three meals per day, seven times per week, for your entire life. So, when you fail to put energy into your relationship with food, it can be easy for your mental and physical health to diminish.
As an individual in recovery, your relationship with food has a larger influence on your journey than you might realize. Both Debbie Nelson and Dr. David Wiss have struggled with poor nutritional habits and experienced just how heavily it can take a toll on both physical and mental health. Low-quality diets, dependencies on caffeine or junk food, and a lack of nutrients can all lead to health problems and higher chances of relapse.
Finding a Middle Ground
Anyone looking to fix their relationship with food must understand that there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach when doing so. Regarding your nutrition, Dr. Wiss emphasizes that only your body can decide what’s best for you. Everyone’s body is unique and has different needs as they recover. Finding a middle ground in the information you learn from social media and your counselors can help you create a nutrition plan that is effective in your life.
Reforming Nutrition in Treatment Centers
While it’s well-known that a strong nutrition plan helps to keep you healthy, many recovery centers still don’t give their residents’ nutrition the attention they should. This is why Dr. Wiss has spent years trying to transform nutritional education within addiction treatment facilities. Without the proper knowledge or examples in your life, it can be challenging to recognize just how much poor nutrition impacts your healing process. In fact, a bad diet can lead to higher chances of depression, increased anxiety levels, and low motivation.
Most facilities allow their residents to eat how they wish. However, this can lead to additional health issues for those who are already struggling to take care of themselves. For example, many people in recovery turn to caffeine and sugary foods as a way to fill the void of the substances they miss. This sets a poor example for new patients who enter the program and are looking for ways to cope.
A Revolutionary Nutrition App
Unlike dieting apps and other programs that emphasize weight loss, Dr. Wiss’s new application allows recovering individuals to not only educate themselves on nutrition but also have access to the tools they need to improve their health. His app is revolutionizing nutritional education and has become an important tool for those fighting substance use and nutrition obstacles.
Within the app, you have the opportunity to track the food you eat, learn more about nutrients, actively monitor your progress, and work to transform your relationship with food. Accompanied by a 30-day video series, Dr. Wiss’s application is built to help recovering individuals create a nutrition plan that changes their lives for the better. Your program will slowly become more personalized, focusing on what works best for your mind and body over time.
Changing Your Nutrition and Your Life
When you let go of substances, your body is most likely going to look for something else to grab onto. Because treatment centers are only now beginning to grasp the advantages of promoting nutrition in recovery, it is up to you to take the first steps in healing your body and improving your health.

@@johnson00nat hey bud. Did some research. Antagonization of a neurotransmitter MAY semiperm or perm decrease receptor density. So, u wanna increase ur m1 density… citicoline can do this. Look into CVS 500 mg citicoline - i feel it helps slightly and permanently maybe for a day to see if u react, then take one onth stop for one month then from there 2 month on 2 month off maybe until 6 months - 6 months can increase d2 and m1-m5 densities as well in rat studies given high ACB (or anticholinergic burden) and and antipsychotic load and anticholinergic load - try a day or few and see how works - also do like an hour of extreme cardio a day - tons if sleep too… hopefully with time sooner would be better. Read zyprexa papers too while ur at it - may help u lead to another direction u are destined to go down anyways, but simply sooner now than rather later. Good luck. PS; Let me know what u think/how it goes… i been asking same question and i got to this conclusion… i can tell u other stuff i take if u want to continue the convo…

I hope your efforts go so far as to change all restaurants so that people can eat right AND have convenience. I know that’s a long goal, but it needs to happen. I follow Dr William Davis and have been eating his L.Reuteri yogurt with significant success. Also, keto plays a huge part. Good luck, guys.
