For the Islamic world (at least the public), there is nothing but the utmost support for the Palestinians. It is one of the very few things that most Muslims support so passionately. Why is that?

@@ibrahimmohammedibrahim9273 so what? Citations don't mean anything when you're cherry picking facts and information while weaving a tale of lies and half truths. I can find you a dozen citations that claim a man can be a woman. Under the Ottomans, the Levant was 20% Christian, not 10%. The Ottomans had conquered the region so how does it make them legitimate or the British illegitimate? The Ottomans moved people from all over their empire into that territory for labor, so how exactly does it make that land theirs, but not Israel's? Palestine was never a state, and the concept of a nation state is a European invention that only arrived in the Middle East only after world war II. The same UN that you're appealing to right now is the same you and that created Israel as well as all of the other surrounding Arab states. This is just a taste of the deliberate misunderstanding of History that's on display in this video. The real reason is that you guys can't claim to be the greatest people of the greatest religion in the world when you're beat by some dirty kufirs. It's basically an entire civilization throwing a temper tantrum claiming "how dare you kick me out of the nightclub, don't you know who my prophet is?" We do and we're not impressed.

@@ibrahimmohammedibrahim9273 implying jewish claims of indigeneity are somehow less than christian and muslim claims to indigeneity is not factual. the way i see it is, there were polytheist canaanites first, then a sub group branched out to become Judaism by adhering to monotheism and that became widespread. then those jews keep getting ousted out of canaanite lands and they keep trying to return to it, at some point some leave to europe and intermix a bit and become today's ashkenazim and sephardim while some still stayed in the general location of the middle east and are now called mizrahim. coming back to canaan, regarding most of the people who stayed back converted to christianity eventually and then when islamic conquests happened, arabic was adopted alongside the religion with some remaining christian and some staying jewish. when jews now want to return to that land, that is not equivalent to the english colonising india

As a german I'm all too aware of "our" part in this drama. Sadly we can't do all that much about it. Our politicians and public media are heavily biased towards the israeli POV. Whenever someone openly criticises Israel and their actions (not the israeli people, mind you, just their politicians), then Israel and/or their supporters are very quick to pull the german N-word card and you can't win against that. Yes, our ancestors did horrible, undeniable, inexcusable things to jews and others, but it's been 80 years now. The no-no-germans are all dead or almost dead. How long will the Israeli keep playing the victims and refer any responsibility for their actions to others? I'm quite sick of this mentality.

Watching from New Zealand. The Palestine solidarity movement would be a broad front consisting of the political left, Arabs, Muslims, progressive Jews, non-evangelical Christians, and Maori activists. Maori activists see an affinity with the Palestinian experience with colonialism. In NZ, the Palestine solidarity movement isnt solely a Muslim movement but a diverse united front. The pro-Israel movement in NZ consists of the political right, evangelical Christians, and the traditional Jewish institutional organisations.

The Jews are the #indigenous people of the Holy Land. Israel is an "indigenous rights" success story that arose out of the DEFEAT of the Ottoman Empire in 1918. It's a pity that the Kurds and Assyrians didn't also get the right to reconstitute their ancestral homelands at that time. Instead, the Arabs got 99% of the land, today's Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Jordan. Maybe in the future there will be more indigenous rights successes?

I’ve made 2 sectarian motivated comments on this video already so I think I’ve fulfilled my duty as a Jew, so now I wanna share a funny perspective I’ve heard living in the USA from the Christian Americans who support Israel more than I do: I was at dinner with some family friends around November of last year and Israel-Palestine was brought up. Me being the historian at the table just kinda silently stared as conservative Christian family and friends talked about the horrible things Hamas was doing and how Gaza should be reduced to rubble. They looked to me for obvious validation as I am viewed as the go-to family expert on the topic, with me being Jewish as well and were shocked and annoyed when I countered their support for Israel with ‘should they have not been prepared to suffer the consequences of taking and settling the land? Better yet land that close to where Palestinians have been contained to like a quarantine?’ In the words I used at the time “Those who would take the sovereignty of others, should be prepared to have their sovereignty taken.” And I mentioned that what Palestine has done to Israeli citizens is just one more case of the many mutual acts of unnecessary violence between the two groups, and stated that whatever harm that was done to Israelis would be returned in tenfold within a year. Turns out it only took 6 months. Not trying to be a pickme here, I am still without a doubt a Zionist. I just refuse to play the game of disinformation like many have, including on this video, simply out of individual dignity. But I thought this would be a fun story to share.

AThree big contentious points are. 1. "Stolen" land, pre 47 land was largely aquired by purchase from absemtee ottoman landlords. Arab tenants were then evicted. Calling that theft is a reach. Of anyone is a theif there It's the ottoman landlords. 2. The expulsions in 47/48 were mutual. Jews were ddriven out of the whole arab world. This needs accounting for in any eventual peace. Those people and the descendents have no other place to go. 3. Claims of "native", "indigenous" or "loved there for evere". This doesn't realy work becuase the jews are also native to that very same land.

Arabs are not a monolith, us palestinians didn't agree to leave our homes, we were forced out, you speak is if it were an amicable population exchange whatever the fuck that is. and regarding point 3, indigeneity has nothing to do with origin but the people's relationship with the land. last i checked indigenous people don't cut down their own trees as a suppression tactic or drastically change the land's ecosystem. Israelis are as native to Palestine as they are to Africa. that's all i have to say, i don't care if you disagree. you can shove your propaganda up your ass.

To people watching Al Muqaddimah for the first time, if it seems like Syawish is ignoring Islamic empires/imperialism, he covers them in his other videos. I recommend watching his other videos too as they provide IMO an unbiased and equally critical/analytical narrative on many different Islamic history topics. His videos on Aurangzeb and Slavery are especially good. Edit: Just to add, some of Syawish’s criticisms of old Islamic empires would probably alienate Islamic conservatives too. I think he deserves credit for talking about delicate subjects in a way that will (rightly) alienate “both sides” for its objective approach.

@@ibrahimmohammedibrahim9273 True, and several countries controlled by Muslim empires, such as Greece, Bulgaria, North India, etc, are not majority Muslim today. I think the main point though, is that past historical conduct does not justify genocide/ethnic cleansing. The Germans do not deserve to be bombed and starved (sound familiar) because of their actions in WWII. So even if the Palestinians were theoretically “guilty” of some past historical sin (which they are not, there was no Palestinian empire/state), it still would not justify the treatment they are receiving from Israel.

If you are assuming there would be some negativity because Matt is Jewish, you might be wrong. Jewish Voices for Peace is a huge group protesting the genocide and 2-3 of the biggest channels covering this and interviewing Palestinians or activists are run by Jewish KZfaqrs. The Majority Report with Sam Seder(leftist news channel where one of the hosts has cried multiple times on air for Palestine), Katie Hepler(who was fired from her old job for support of Palestine), Bad Hasbara(a channel run by a stand-up comedian making fun of Israeli propaganda), Norm Finkelstien is a frequent guest on these shows and is one of the biggest calmest voices debunking Israeli propaganda. There are many Jewish people who back Palestine even to the point of calling for a one state solution but traditional Muslims who don't go into leftist spaces will probably not see them. The Majority Report even did an interview about Imran Khan and the rigged Pakistani elections including how the US was involved.

A pretty interesting video, personally hearing an issue form a different perspective is interesting. But I do wish to argue against a few points; . 1)the idea that the current Middle East question is more or less a result of western conflict/imperialism exploitation is not necessarily accurate. The west was not necessarily against Islamic influence per se. It depended on the conflicts. Obviously I am not saying there wasn’t any superiority complex or bigotry. It ignores the imperialism that the Islamic empire forced upon numerous tribes, ethnic groups, etc. thar conquest did change the demographics of religiosity in the areas (and no this is not me judging them, it’s a historical fact) in fact the Ottoman Empire, as the years continued, suppressed any notions of nationalism or even ethnicity/religious self-determination. This clearly cannot be described as solely a “western imperialistic” campaign. The result was that perhaps the potential for peaceful resolutions to internal conflicts was halted. And that more extremist versions of nationalism grew as a response to massive crackdowns. This is where Arab nationalism more or less seems to have grown out of. Then of course ww1 changed the game. The Middle East changed from one massive imperialist power to numerous states, some with western control. There was no one single power dictating what was going to happen. Even the idea that the British favored Jews ignores the real restrictions the Brit’s placed on Jews for immigration and power as the various Zionist nationalists fought against the Brit’s. The Brit’s is general were so incompetent and clueless as to how to handle this territory which was becoming an epicenter for nationalism. Which is how they usually are. 2)can we really say that this cause is fully supported by the Islamic world? The reason I ask that is that looking at the history of Palestine, it’s very up in the air. Depending on which nations support it and the context. Did Jordan support Palestine when it once went to war with the PLO (forcing some of its members to flee in lebenon which then spiked into civil war?).for whatever reason middle way nations have never really seemed to say movie to explicitly set up a Palestinian country independent. Even Egypt, under nasser, under its pro-arab vision seemed to be willing behind the scenes to Leave Palestinians without a realistic chance to form.a new government. . The Middle East Cold War of the post war years (and then the second Cold War following the Islamic revolution), really has made the region so complicated of understanding who wants what and who really cares about certain issues.

Calling out evil from all aspects is in line with the Sunnah, thus it's crucial for Muslims worldwide to speak out against the ongoing genocide in Palestine, as hypocrisy is a grave sin. However, this obligation extends beyond religious boundaries to encompass all individuals facing genocide, oppression, and other injustices globally. If the Muslim community truly adheres to the teachings of the Quran and the authentic Hadiths, then it holds a responsibility to advocate for the liberation of all oppressed people, recognizing that anyone, regardless of their faith, deserves support. Also to remember that anyone regardless of their background, can be seen as a potential Muslim. It's imperative to avoid succumbing to tribalism in this and other conflicts and instead denounce injustice wherever it occurs. Whether it's the governments of Iran, America, Russia, Europe, Asia, Africa, or particularly Arab states, Muslims have a duty to defend human rights and refuse to be manipulated as political tools by state actors. This being said, Muslims have a duty to peacefully and forcefully combat oppression against themselves following the rules accordingly.

Thank you for a frank discussion about why this conflict is so prominenet in the minds of Muslims. It has helped give me perspective. It always strikes me as odd, and possibly hypocritical (though I reserve jusgement, since I do not myself understand all the history and complexity of the situation) that people should care so much about this conflict and yet little about others. And I mean this both about those supporting Israel and those supporting Palestine--what makes this conflict special? This essay has helped me understand at least the pro-Palestinian perspective. Can I ask why Muslims distinguish this conflict from, for instance, Xinjiang, which seems to my eyes to be the same thing--a foreign power attempting to erase the identity of a native people and make their home region culturally amenable to a state dominated by another ethnic and religious majority--why is this one not as sharply felt? Is it because there is no recent Chinese imperialism like there is Western to remember? Or perhaps becasue China's claim to the region considered more legitimate than Britain's claim to Palestine? Why does Xinjiang not generate the same level of passion?

Hi Frank, I'm a Muslim from Malaysia and I think I can give a certain perspective on why the plight of the Palestinians are more pronounced among Muslims compared to the plight of the Uyghurs. Firstly, Muslims seem to care more about Palestine because the treatment of the Palestinians by the Israeli state is more overtly violent and cruel compared to how the Chinese government treated the Uyghurs. I have no doubt that the Chinese state is slowly displacing the Uyghurs with Han Chinese settlers, however the difference is you don't really hear about the Chinese state incessantly bombing Uyghur children with missiles and bombs for decades. We don't really hear about the casual violence by Chinese settlers against Uyghurs or constant arbitrary arrest of Uyghur children, unlike the Palestinians. We also don't see the greatest superpower in the world ,USA, whitewashing the crimes of the Chinese government. What happened to the Palestinians are just simply much more visible compared to what is happening to the Uyghurs since the Chinese state has a tight control of the media coverage of East Turkestan. For the second reason, it is because of Al-Aqsa. Al-Aqsa is the third holiest site in Islam and once upon a time, it was the direction where Muslims prayed to before we started praying in the direction of the Kabba. It was the site of some of the most pivotal moments in Islamic history, thus the religious and historical value of Al-Aqsa automatically makes the situation in Palestine more important to the Muslim Umma then the situation in East Turkestan. I hope this answers your question Frank

I really enjoy your channel and love your work. But I’m trying to understand something here. How can you speak of colonialism and not mention the colonial settler Arab conquest of that region? I also find it funny how you say “the British “let” the Jews settle there.” Did anyone “let” the Islamic conquest into the Levantine? Are we going to “let” the Kurds have a state to call home? The Jewish peoples, which include the Jews in Africa and the Middle East, which are the majority of Jews in Israel today, chess-game’d and Game-of-Thrones’d their way back into their homeland. Call it conquering back, if you will. The irony, that the Levantine peoples there, who were colonized by the Arabs and began to call themselves as their conquerers name “Arab”, then chose to identify themselves as Palestinian, which is a name that comes from a peoples who are not even native to that land, is…. Well… the very definition of ironic. All that said, I’m pro Palestinian and Pro Israel. Both peoples are a family and I wish and hope we can find peace. The situation on the ground needs to change now. Whether it’s two states, one state, a federation, whatever. Personally, “USIP” or “United States of Israel and Palestine” sounds good to me. 🤷‍♂️ I would love to have a conversation anytime with you and hear more of your thoughts and go deeper into any of these topics.

Your scholarly work is some of the best on KZfaq, so please don't misunderstand me. I find that your videos on Palestine are not up to your normal high standard. Perhaps this is because you have too much bias on this political issue? Or perhaps you have been unduly swayed by the propaganda storm around Palestine that's at a very high pace right now, but has been going on since the first intifada. I'll still recommend your videos to students in my cultural history courses. As for the conflict, i fully expect that there will be a very substantial correction of the historical record once this present war is finished.
