Thank you for this series. If only I can get my friends to view it. They hold the medical establishment in such high regard that any other voice goes unheard.

Yikes. A bit off topic: I spent 20+ of my almost 40 years going to doctors for a number of issues including depression, chronic pain, and epilepsy. The lack of knowledge on the part of the majority of those physicians was stunning. Had I not done my own research, I might still be on tons of medication and believing that I had little choice. It’s not uncommon for doctors (and pharmacists) to fail to educate people about side effects, which are often more problematic than the underlying condition. I am not surprised by this information, but it’s still frightening. Subbed.

I also only now realize I've been a puppet to the industry most of my life (dealing with chronic mental and physical issues). I've had 2 failed spinal surgeries - NONE of the doctors informed me of the risks. Only after the surgery did they actually tell me that there is significant chance that hardware they put in my body will be rejected by my body. I am unable to work, have basic insurance and thus no means to get that 3rd surgery to get rid of the hardware in my spine. I used to blindly believe all doctors, now I do my own research (I know they hate it, but doesn't this video proof that they are wrong!)

I got over drugged too all because of a knee injury which army docs failed to poorly care for. I'm a dependant so not important in there eyes. The medicine ate holes in my stomach and they said it was all in my head and gave me benzodiazepine. More holes in my stomach. I stopped eating and lost all my muscles. I had to get away from all that. The knee healed slowly but going plant based has permanently resolved gastric issues and I now try to stay away from doctors

"GLOBAL MAMMOGRAPHY MARKET PROJECTED TO BE 28 BILLION BY 2020" THAT is the reason women are lied to about the risks of mammograms... And hospitals and doctors are gatekeepers: They will not allow women to have breast MRI's or ultrasounds unless the women first submit to mammograms. It is an evil RACKET.

IMO Dr G is far too easy on the medical establishment. My own personal experience and the experiences of countless people sharing via internet (e.g. ChrisBeatCancer), is doctors actively push back against any information that could jeopardize their revenue. I mention Chris Wark because many he's interviewed share their oncologist's reaction to informed patients. Hostile would be an understatement.

As a nurse, my experience is that doctors usually discuss risks as they relate to their own experience (e.g., "there's a possibility of a punctured lung but I've never had one."). In their defense, I know most doctors are really busy and so they're likely prioritizing their energy where they think it's most important. Let's just persuade the patient to sign a consent for the course of action that I truly believe is the best thing for them.

I checked out that '"simple" question and I totally understand why almost half of the participants went for the wrong answer. So basically that means that 98% of all treatments ever executed were unnecessary, if that's true then it's still a miracle that only 2 women died from the treatment for every 1 that was saved...
@neriman8

It *is* a simple question if you understand Bayesian probability. Medical students should be required to study probability and statistics. The question, which is a hypothetical one, is as follows: if the probability for a disease is 0.001, and the probability of a false positive is 0.05, then what is the probability of disease given a positive result. The answer is: P(disease | positive result) = P(positive result | disease) * P(disease) / P(positive result) P(positive result) = P(positive result | disease) * P(disease) + P(positive result | no disease) * P(no disease) Thus: P (disease | positive result) = (0.95 * 0.001) / (0.95*0.001 + 0.05*0.999) = 0.0187 which can be rounded up to 2%. Most students confused P(positive result | disease) with P(disease | positive result). That's appalling if you know even the basics of Bayesian probability. They would terrify you by telling you, with great confidence, that your chance of having the disease is 95% when it is in fact 2%. Everyone should learn probability and statistics, not just doctors.

I wonder.......maybe the most dangerous thing about mammograms is that often, when a women Gets a "normal" mammogram, she stops doing the self exams, not realizing that she can still have breast cancer due to false negatives. Or she can still get cancer a few months down the road. If the medical establishment made as much money from self exams as they do from mammograms, which kind of exam do you think they would encourage.

Put a man's "jewels" into a mammogram vice just one time and it would be outlawed. When men began putting their feet into stirrups during vasectomies, they suddenly were covered with footies because they were cold. I know a nurse who had a vasectomy patient get faint as he had his feet in those stirrups. As she placed a cold cloth on his forehead, she whispered, "I want you to go home and give your wife a hug for every pelvic exam she has endured." He said, "I will! I will!"

WONDERFUL series, Dr.Greger! Every year during my annual physical my doctor tries to talk me into getting a mammogram. It has been six years since I’ve had one. I could never understand why flattening my breast like a pancake was in any way safe. After doing research, there is no way in hell I will get another one. There are better alternatives.

great work...but some people...maybe a lot of people don't want to be responsible for decision making. they leave it to the "professionals" (i.e. a savior) and assume they know what they're doing while the patient lives an ignorant yet blissful life. people do tend to shirk their responsibilities when they are paying someone else to think for them - alas, the facts should be laid bare, not a pretty smoke screen. love your work mike - keep popularizing that science!

I agree that this is important information, but I thought your focus was on NUTRITION? Love you, Greger, but I'm longing for some nutrition videos! If you're exploring some other health care topics now, could you do a video on fluoride supplementation? And maybe one on childhood vaccines? I know you get asked about these things quite a lot. Thanks :)
