I moved to the Calgary area in ‘95 from Toronto. Best decision of my life. I routinely ask people where the best place in Canada is to live if they still have to work for a living and keep coming right back to the Calgary area, decent work opportunities, housing prices, outdoor adventures, weather (gotta love the Chinooks). About the only thing Alberta lacks is lakes.

Born and raised in Alberta and would never move out of province. Currently live in rural Alberta in the foothills. Heaven. I love your bipolar description of the weather. Pretty accurate.

Point #1 is not exclusive to moving to Alberta. It applies no matter where one moves to. Additionally, a slower pace of life is not a negative.

Life in Alberta has a great quality of living. Medical care is better. Yes the missing of family is probably the biggest con. V

You should also mention that: 1- Alberta has the highest electricity charges and car insurance premiums in Canada 2- Water is very scarce in major cities 3- there are municipal franchise fees on all utility bills 4- municipalities charge for waste water 5- Alberta has the highest property taxes in the country

Great video! One thing that causes regrets (or anger sometimes) is that tradespeople often move here from other provinces thinking they are going to walk right into a job in the oil sands, without realizing that the trade and safety tickets requirements are different in the Alberta oil sands than in their home province. For example, in some provinces ironworker is a non-compulsory trade and it is compulsory here in Alberta. The person would be required to be in a trade qualifier Program in order to work here (legally) in their trade. And safety tickets, like Fall Arrest from Ontario, can't be used in the oil sands, they need an Alberta Fall protection ticket. I generally catch these guys during onboarding and luckily our union pays for safety tickets courses now, and I usually have enough time to direct them to complete whatever else they need to before they start. Sadly, not every union or company does this they miss out on jobs because they simply just didn't know this stuff isn't the same in every province.

This is a good point. I have, or had at least, my 5th class certificate for working with boilers and low pressure vessels. I figured since I had that done in Sask, an oil province to some extent, like Alberta; I could just upgrade here in Alberta... Nope. Basically have to retake the course all over again. Why? Well, the reasons I was told might be the official reason; but to me they're the same BS that I had to deal with when going between provinces while in Highschool. Alberta has no respect for the Sask education system. So little respect, that despite having taken the same course load from Sask one year as the grade I was about to enter in Alberta, I was put into one of the lower split classes they use here in Alberta to separate the 'smart kids' from the 'troubled ones'. They don't put it that way, but that's literally what it is, because when I was asked to recite a poem for Remembrance day that got a standing ovation from the veterans in the audience; my English teacher asked the principal later that day (I was told) "Why is he in the B class, he's as smart, or even smarter than your A class students if his grades and work is anything to go by." She was literally told by the principal "Because Saskatchewan is behind Alberta in every way." I thought at the time it was just that school being deluded... then I went to others in Alberta; and got the same shtick. So it's not isolated. What made things worse... was that the Alberta based schools I was going to, were all doing course work from a year or two prior that I already covered in Sask... He did not like me correcting him about that. Told him "So, when are your students going to stop learning about Pony Boy and the other outsiders? Cause we left that behind in grade 6!" I was in grade 9 at that point. It's been a while now since I was last in the school system, so I hope that things have changed for the better since then... but the last time I looked into going to SAIT to upgrade; I was met with similar attitudes...
