Point #1 is not exclusive to moving to Alberta. It applies no matter where one moves to. Additionally, a slower pace of life is not a negative.

I believe Red Deer has the potential to be a big city one of these days. From what I've been hearing, it is currently the 3rd cheapest city for real estate. If that's true, I can see a population boom in the next 10 years.

AB is a beautiful province! I have seriously considered moving to AB for several of the positive reasons you discussed in your video. What holds me back are the lax gun laws. Humans are emotional animals who at times can lose control of their emotions - hence the reason police recruits are so highly vetted for public safety. My position on guns comes from personal experience. At the tender age of 11 years, I had a rifle pointed right at me when a local man thought I was American. The only thing that saved my life were good samaritans near by who interjected and stopped him from shooting me - true story.

Thanks for your comment ! Sorry to hear that that happened to you! I can see why you feel the way you do! IMO criminals will still get guns illegally anyway ! Disarming the innocent isn’t the way to go! Thank you for your comment !❤️

I moved to the Calgary area in ‘95 from Toronto. Best decision of my life. I routinely ask people where the best place in Canada is to live if they still have to work for a living and keep coming right back to the Calgary area, decent work opportunities, housing prices, outdoor adventures, weather (gotta love the Chinooks). I have lived here 2 yrs after selling out in Vancouver area. Absolutely love this town - even in summer as it gets busy. We are used to much busier and overcrowded lifestyle. Resort living is something we could not afford to do in BC. We live say 10 blocks from the lake so not crazy at all. Our lovely home would have cost us 4 times as much where we moved from. Shopping is unbelievably abundant and convenient. This place is one of the nicest places I have ever seen in the world and I have been to 47 countries. The lake is regarded as one of the nicest in all of Canada, nice restaurants and bars with decent prices. One of Canada's hidden gems but growing very fast as more people discover it.

There are actually lots of great places to eat in Red Deer if you're looking for variety. If you like Korean BBQ, there's Foodie Bros. or Gangnam and Coco. If you're into Vietnamese, Pho Thuy Dung is the best in town. For Thai there's Ruon Thai or Blue Dragon. For Japanese food, I always recommend the EKA of Japan, or Shiso for sushi. If you're looking for authentic Mexican, Las Palmeras or Tacoloft are great. Hash or Murph's for a tasty breakfast. For great pub food, Bo's or Murph's are great and so is East 40th. It just seems that restaurants don't always have staying power here, but all of the places I mentioned above are both affordable and delicious. You're right about the nightlife, all the clubs closed down and it's a drag if you're younger. We do still have two exotic dancer clubs, two video game arcade bars, a tabletop gaming lounge, and a VR arcade. There are two bowling alleys open late, and there's tons of live music and art culture to take in. There's usually some sort of event going on at Bower Ponds, where you can rent paddleboats in the summer or skates in the winter. Sylvan Lake is ten minutes away and does actually have some decent bars on the Lakeshore Drive strip. The trail system of course, is by far the best thing about RD. All in all, some great points. I recommend The Vat Pub or Bo's for any kind of live tunes, or head downtown and check out Ross Street Patio or Capstone when there's an event going on. Red Deer may not be massive in size, but there's a huge drive towards developing a real sense of community that I think a lot of people tend to be ignorant of. I hope this supplemental info helps anyone new to the area.

As a resident you don’t go to the lake in summer bc tourists make it brutal! So that negates lake living and winter you can enjoy it much more. Agree there are some events to do and has a good size farmers market on fridays. Too many bar/“restaurants” on Lakeshore Drive and dead downtown. Lack of services (no tailor or dry cleaner for example…ok there’s one dry cleaner that ruins your shit) so you gotta go to Red Deer. Def not the best lake in Canada…not sure what self deluded person said that but sounds like you wanna sell houses! If you are used to living in a larger urban center Sylvan will disappoint but it is a beautiful little Town….kinda nice to visit but not so great to live depending on your life stage. If there was a resident only beach area and more shopping, activities and adult sport teams i might have better things to say….oh wait plus the very right leaning political views get to you.

What pisses me off about red deer, is that there isn't hardly a single GD straight road! And there are only 5 roads that join up to the #2. There is NO ring road. Highway 11A does not go down to riverside drive. And because of that traffic is heavy and congested.
@livinginalberta
@livinginalberta 8 күн бұрын
I don’t find it congested in the slightest . Red deer is great for traffic and we are no where near the size we would need to be for a ring road . Heck Edmonton and Calgary just got their ring roads not long ago

Great video! One thing that causes regrets (or anger sometimes) is that tradespeople often move here from other provinces thinking they are going to walk right into a job in the oil sands, without realizing that the trade and safety tickets requirements are different in the Alberta oil sands than in their home province. For example, in some provinces ironworker is a non-compulsory trade and it is compulsory here in Alberta. The person would be required to be in a trade qualifier Program in order to work here (legally) in their trade. And safety tickets, like Fall Arrest from Ontario, can't be used in the oil sands, they need an Alberta Fall protection ticket. I generally catch these guys during onboarding and luckily our union pays for safety tickets courses now, and I usually have enough time to direct them to complete whatever else they need to before they start. Sadly, not every union or company does this they miss out on jobs because they simply just didn't know this stuff isn't the same in every province.

This is a good point. I have, or had at least, my 5th class certificate for working with boilers and low pressure vessels. I figured since I had that done in Sask, an oil province to some extent, like Alberta; I could just upgrade here in Alberta... Nope. Basically have to retake the course all over again. Why? Well, the reasons I was told might be the official reason; but to me they're the same BS that I had to deal with when going between provinces while in Highschool. Alberta has no respect for the Sask education system. So little respect, that despite having taken the same course load from Sask one year as the grade I was about to enter in Alberta, I was put into one of the lower split classes they use here in Alberta to separate the 'smart kids' from the 'troubled ones'. They don't put it that way, but that's literally what it is, because when I was asked to recite a poem for Remembrance day that got a standing ovation from the veterans in the audience; my English teacher asked the principal later that day (I was told) "Why is he in the B class, he's as smart, or even smarter than your A class students if his grades and work is anything to go by." She was literally told by the principal "Because Saskatchewan is behind Alberta in every way." I thought at the time it was just that school being deluded... then I went to others in Alberta; and got the same shtick. So it's not isolated. What made things worse... was that the Alberta based schools I was going to, were all doing course work from a year or two prior that I already covered in Sask... He did not like me correcting him about that. Told him "So, when are your students going to stop learning about Pony Boy and the other outsiders? Cause we left that behind in grade 6!" I was in grade 9 at that point. It's been a while now since I was last in the school system, so I hope that things have changed for the better since then... but the last time I looked into going to SAIT to upgrade; I was met with similar attitudes...
