Why Responding To your Anxiety Isn't Enough To Recover

Simply responding to symptoms is not enough, as recovery involves understanding the mechanics of anxiety, responding in the present moment, and changing behaviors, mindset, and self-talk.
Shaan emphasizes the need for self-compassion, patience, and empathy towards oneself, as well as challenging and letting go of unhelpful narratives. Shaan also suggests seeking guidance from a supportive community to accelerate the recovery process.

My Lord I love how you explain every single thing properly. I haven't found someone to be able to do this yet with such accuracy. It's like you're the ultimate advocate for all of us dealing with anxiety and panic loops ... In the four years that I have been suffering with this it is now that I find you ... And I'm blessed ...

Hey Shaan, this comes at the right time..my anxiety issues started from not being able to set boundaries, beating myself up over small things, feeling anger, shame, guilt for feeling certain emotions, or from putting myself first (coz it felt selfish). Now I am beginning to realize that not only with anxiety, but with other areas in life, I should also just let myself feel what I am feeling and not feel bad about it, get frustrated or feel guilty over it all the time. It is very hard though coz I fear if I set boundaries and let myself feel the emotions or put myself first, I am being selfish and imperfect and evil.

I learned to not respond to anxiety, but to allow it and observe it. I read in a few eastern philosophy books and a mindfulness workbook on amz called 30 Days to Reduce Anxiety by Harper Daniels that anxiety loves a fight, so fighting and struggling with it is counterintuitive. When I stopped doing that and practiced sitting with it, journaling thoughts, practicing mindfulenss from that book...it helped a lot. Also, might sound strange but I had to eliminate caffeine to ease my mind...i still drink green tea but no longer coffee, it was too much.

Even though quitting coffee to decrease anxiety is a response to anxiety, which you should not do according to shaan(im not disagreeing with anything he says by the way) it truly does help with the your anxiety levels, that and nicotine in any form. These two ''drugs'' makes you more alert and increases sympatic nervous system activity. Especially when you are in your early stages of recovering, quitting this can really help you gain momentum and get that push you need to start your recovery for real. Again the ways shaan teaches is otherwise completely correct and i have managed to become anxiety free within a year, starting from having 5 panic attacks a day following his teachings through his youtube videos.

I think my story is that I tell myself if I eat outside food which is oily spicy it will cause me some serious disease or I will pass out. So because of that I fear eating outside. Still I go n eat and try to enjoy but that thought alway comes and then I leave in half. Or don't eat. I also tell myself that m not living good lifestyle which is going to harm my body and I will have some life treating disease in coming future. So because of all this I am always on edge.

YES! The title is hard cold true & Shaan's channel finally talk about it more. I learned this 'Behavioural' aspect from other channels earlier & understandably as more is shared on this advance aspect, i feel the channel is 'complete'. Sticks with Shaan's channel & its enough. Hard on myself but not on others is true for me as i was treated & taught that way. But i also learned from this channel not to blame others & instead taking responsibility to recover. I really stop blaming others in the process. I'm currently experiencing higher symptoms perhaps due to setbacks while facing my fear aka stressors but as i learned here, respond with courage. It starts with symptom, & now i apply it to, life. Keep it going Mr. Shaan & channel. 🎉 & i'm happy the intro music is back too! I suggest u can update the visual background but stay with the music. Well, just sharing my tought on it.

Perfectly said... although so hard to keep that balance about not being hard on yourself but holding yourself responsible for your well being. How do you safeguard yourself from others' toxicity without judging them or being hard on them? It feels like I am evil if I think someone is bad for me or I should kick them out of my life.. I feel so guilty about it sometime later, after I have decided this person/friend is not right for me.

Thank you so much for all of your videos. Just wondering if you have any insight into how being unable to leave a stressful/toxic/mentally abusive/etc. relationship (or job) because of financial restraints and no outside support can hinder recovery--or not ?? How does one still apply your techniques when the fear is real and the only change that can be made is laced with even more fear ?? Thank you again for all you and your team do.

AHHH, reminds me of a toxic work relationship with my boss which left me with immense anxiety... I just kept going bcoz I was afraid I couldn't lose my job, eventually I broke down, started having full on panic attacks and had to quit my job. Now I am in recovery, and uncovering the attitudes and behaviors that pushed me into anxiety. If it costing you your mental health, I feel you should quit that situation, distance yourself from it as soon as you can. If it is extremely unavoidable (like if stuck with an uncompromising mother in law or boss), you should assess the situation. You should start looking for a new job, and meanwhile not obsess over how your present boss is treating you. Just think that nothing in life is permanent, what is the worst that can happen, your boss will be unhappy, he will argue with you, call you incompetent? I say you confront him/her, tell them your concerns and communicate that you are human and this is taking a toll on you and if forced so much, you will have to quit. I kept silent and never stood up for myself, and payed a very high price of it. Now I dont have my job, nor my mental health. With someone like an annoying mother in law, just like Claire Weekes says, stop assuming the worst about them, stop obsessing thinking they are watching your every move and that they want bad for you. Resentment in such situation can lead to even more resentment from their side and make things worse. Start thinking them as annoying person but not dangerous. It is not like they can kill you. What is the worst that could happen? They are a nuisance, not a life threatening situation. Know the difference and don't let them climb on your nerves. Anxiety is just that - bad nerves (from overthinking about a problem that seems unfixable/unavoidable).

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. Unfortunately, there is no way for me to leave or even make waves--to do so would leave me in a much worse situation. I so agree about the job--I am glad that you stood up for yourself. I have no in-laws. I hope if you do they are good to you. Unfortunately, I am not assuming regarding this person--in my case, it was pretty blatant. I like the way you described Anxiety at the end--so true and a great way to put it. That I guess is the crux of the situation I was asking Shaan and his crew about--how do you deal with the Anxiety Disorder if your reality is also causing fear. Is it possible ?? I am so happy you are recovering. I wish you all the best.

@@MsQUESTIONALL I totally understand you, you seem to be in a situation very similar to mine. No I am not married, but my ex boss was a nightmare. Because of her, the job I once loved became the job I hated and dreaded the most. And no, I didnt stand up for myself, like you I was extremely scared of what will happen if I rebel and complain against her, coz then she will destroy me and resent me even more. I finally broke down and when I became completely dysfunctional, I had to quit my job. I urge you to learn from my experience. What is the worst that can happen? Is your boss God? No! Such people have their own unresolved traumas they are projecting on us. They are bitter from their past experiences. You will not die if you lose your job. I did not. It would have been so much better if I had quit on time and expressed myself but I do understand the fear of the unknown terrifies you. Regarding your anxiety, your present situation is definitely fuelling your anxiety, it might even be the major cause of it. Have you read Claire Weekes book? She explains that dwelling on a problem is very bad for anxiety. You must accept one point of view and stick to it. Dont go back and forth over should I stay or not, just make one narrative, one decision and stick to it. If you want to continue, reach a compromise in your mind. Think of your boss as an annoying, insecure person who has their own issues. Stop giving them the respect and fear inside your heart. Maybe even laugh at them inside instead of being terrified by them. They are just like anxiety, loud and annoying, but fake. There is no real threat. Accept their annoying attitude as just that, dont create a monster out of them like we do with anxiety symptoms. When you will lose respect/fear for them mentally your behavior will automatically become more confident around them and about them. Trust me these people do not own us, they are hollow threats, just like our anxiety. I hope you find the courage to either quit or stick around and maybe even thrive in that atmosphere. It is all about confidence. When you will lose the fear of them (like our anxiety symptoms), they will no longer dominate you the same way. First you need to lose fear of them, then you will lose any respect (importance) of them in your min, when you will know they are not dangerous. They are nuisances but NOT dangerous.

Breathe in through your nose and then take another quick breath in through the nose again and breathe out longer through open mouth and sigh. Just make sure the breathe out is longer. Its about the mixture of air. It helps me. Otherwise, here's another - put your finger on one side of your nose and block off nostril while you breathe in through your nose, slowly. Breathe out through mouth with finger on other side. Then breathe in with that finger still on same side, nostril closed, put finger on other side and breathe out through mouth. Slowly.

Dont try to change the Way you breathe because that would mean u are responding to your Anxiety, when u do respond to your anxiety you tell your nervous system that shortness of breath is a threat. Which it isnt, is just a feeling and a anxiety symptom that appears to trick u into thinking u are not getting enough oxygen which makes u breathe faster and deeper and become ready to fight or flight. What u wanna do is Just accept that you have shortness of breath for now and breathe normally but dont do it to make it go away which would Also mean u responding to your anxiety. In short when u feel shortness of breath, feel the shortness of breath and go on with your day.
