Rick and Morty is one of the wildest, most imaginative TV shows out there, so much so that it has spawned more fan theories than almost any other TV show ever made! And for good reason! Just about anything that you can imagine could happen in the multiverse of Rick and Morty, and even some things you might never have thought possible. But one fan theory in particular might just be the Rickest of all! And that theory is the one that Rick and Morty might actually be the same person!
Yup, you heard right! Some fans think that Morty is actually his own grandfather, or that Rick is his own grandson. While Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland have gone on record about how they don’t want to get into the messy business of time travel, this theory wonders if Rick used time travel once, to go back in time and change his own future. See, some think that there is a possibility that Rick never came back to his family, and that Morty grew up without the influence of this grandfather. Without it, he became isolated and miserable, but interested in science. Over time, his life got so bad that Morty went to the utmost extremes in order to stop himself from winding up the way he did, which meant going back in time and impersonating his grandfather, in order to show himself the wonders of the universe!

Or Rick/Morty, went back in time and killed his own grandfather and grandmother (or changing his grandmother memories) shortly after Beth was born and raising her as his daughter. this would avoid the grandfather paradox since Beth was already born and avoid any... genetical issues that becoming your own grandfather would incur.

He never time traveled to fix his younger self. And the other ricks needed to preserve their biggest secret and forced him to keep it a secret with a different story. Because doofus Rick still had a messed up childhood dynamic he still became a genius, found dimensions and found the other ricks. The other ricks hate him because they think he’s RIDICULOUSLY wrong for not trying to change the past. Which is also why doofus Rick is not as big of an asshole as the other ricks and ACTUALLY gets along with who else JERRY because he’s trying to get along and forgive his parents. 🤯

I don't know why people think it's an inconsistency for Rick to have a memory of holding baby Morty. It's a clue, but it's not inconsistent... Of all the characters in the world, it's difficult to imagine Rick Sanchez either 1) sneaking into Beth's house to set up everything it has before manipulating her into letting him move in and 2) abducting baby Morty for an afternoon or otherwise meeting him without Beth's knowledge and consent? I mean, c'mon, the show states all the damn time that Rick escalated in power specifically because being around Morty hid him from the Galactic Government. So, which came first people: Rick insisting on living with his estranged daughter or him meeting his grandson, realizing he could use the kid, which gave him a motivation to insist on living with his estranged daughter?

only thing that really throws me off is in the citadel of ricks, the young rick is wearing a yellow shirt and white shoes. other than that i believe this entire theory is wrong. rick was just dying from loneliness and found a partner/ camouflage he could use for his adventures.

I actually think it might be possible! Another theory that I've heard about considered the aspect that Rick didn't want Morty to age like him and the why might be because Rick is Morty! Moreover in the 5th season (in the end of each episode where the producers talk about the process of creation) they did talk about another storyline that is hidden in the show, that there was clues in the series to find it, and the "Rick is Morty thanks to time travel" one can be considered as a very good hidden plot!

As this video is older than season 5, season 5 disproves this so no need to go in a “you didn’t watch this” bit. But Rick can’t be Morty cause Rick causes Beth and Jerry to be together just so he can have Morty and he just takes delight in shiting on Jerry. They also said they didn’t want to touch on time travel because it’s messy or whatever.

There's a hole in part of this theory, if it were true that Morty and Jessica followed the same pattern that Jerry and Beth does, when rick was drunk in one of the first episodes, he said he was going to blow up the planet but save morty's friend Jessica, which doesn't make sense if rick resents ever meeting/getting into a relationship with morty.

Heres a plothole, in the episode big trouble in little sanchez, rick geneticly clones himself and his younger self with the same blue and spikey hair he has now which means if morty was rick then shouldnt he have similar hair and this might be rick styling his hair before he changed his hair bur in the end credit scene we see rick incubating even more clones that also have the same hair

No no no no no no no no, the one-time Rick traveled had nothing to do with abandoning Beth. He was going back to get that sweet Szechuan sauce so he can laser the taste in his memory therefore he can put his mind into a simulation and have more Szechuan sauce when he was hungry.

There's a pretty distinctive flaw with this theory. Rick has distinct memories about raising Beth, how messed up of a kid she was and creating FroopyLand for her. So this only works if Morty went back to raise her as a child and then left for 20 years anyway. The time travel stuff if you really need to work it into the plot works better if we assume that the time travel is WHY Rick missed 20 years of Beth's life and that's why he won't be touching it again.

Infinite universes = infinite possibility's, so this has already happened infinite times on infinite different finite curves in the Rick and Morty multiverse regardless if that is the case with our pair/curve or not.

The scene when jerry called Morty “retard” Rick got kinda offended witch is not a usual Rick thing. (When it is not about him self) Usually when Rick is mean to Morty it is about hating himself in a way, BUT when people hate on you you don’t likely take it the same way and gets offended instead! Is that another reason Rick is Morty i donno?

This is my theory. I’m not allowed to have one? Love Potion #9 to me says a lot about Morty and Rick are just related. Also the Time Travel stuff is a (word left me) a play on Doc Brown and Marty. No time travel has been in the show so far and I doubt it will. Time lines and Travel are different.

This Theory absolutely makes no sense. "Completely fabricated backstory" that shuts the whole Theory down. Also don't forget he has to have a Morty so that he can be camouflaged.

This theory doesn't actually require time travel. Rick/Morty could from an older universe in the multiverse, jumping to a younger universe to mentor the younger morty. This would go to explain why in "Morty's Mind Blowers" Rick mentions only being able to make a permanent jump to a few more universes... "you fucked with squirrels morty!" It would make sense that they could only jump into seamlessly a few universes, if you consider the amount of Ricks jumping to the younger universes. They can't jump to the older universes, I doubt Rick would ever allow that to happen or at least remove the memory from Morty afterwards, and most of the younger universes either already have a Rick and Morty or a Rick is scheduled to arrive in the future. Plus the Ricks need to allow plenty of universes where Rick never "returns" and therefore the Morty will become a Rick.
