You might know Roy Wood Jr. from his time as a correspondent on The Daily Show. But for years, Roy has honed his comedy as a travelling stand-up comic. This month, he headlines the Just for Laughs Comedy Tour, with shows across Canada from St. John’s to Victoria. He drops by the studio to talk to Tom Power about why it was time for him to leave The Daily Show.

What I respect most about comedians like Roy: he's also incredibly cerebral and aware of our changing society, esp the ever-changing methods we use to get our new, has evolved.

Already miss Roy on The Daily Show. I certainly thought his week guest hosting was a slam dunk audition. Not sure what else a producer could want in a host!

It makes a lot of sense that Roy has such an understanding of this since his father was a highly respected journalist and professor and he himself has a Bachelor's in journalism.

I remember when Trevor Noah started, Roy was one of the new correspondents. From his first stint, I knew he was talented.....I was routing for him to take over from Trevor....

'how low does the audience number need to go before we have that conversation' is a great point. in the uk bbc shows get a few hundred thousand viewers and yet the hosts get paid a fortune. uk youtubers like hbomberguy get 10 million views per vid. the gap between online and old school tv is massive.

I don't know who that youtuber is, but that's already the model for these shows. They all put clips on youtube and regularly get hundreds of thousands and millions of views, and occasionally tens of millions or more. The format is still comfortable for people, but it's just that the way people watch has changed. So they're getting the TV advertising, the KZfaq views and most of them have some version of a podcast. All of this is the same for SNL, network morning shows, cables news, etc.

Every now and again I'll try to catch a late night talk show on broadcast TV, but for at least 5 years now, I would say that I ingest my late night comedy mostly via KZfaq. And it's not that I don't have the attention span to sit and watch a whole show (I'll watch Seth Myers do a 20 minute "corrections" segment; ironically not part of the "terrestrial" show), but I find that I can pick and choose which guests, and which segments I want to watch, instead of settling in for a whole show and hope that this is the one episode that has a "Suprise Inspection" or "Amber Says What" or "Wheel of Musical Impressions" segment. Ironically, The Daily Show was probably the last and still the only show I'd sit down to watch from start to finish on a daily basis. But the cable TV bill got waaaay too expensive, and so now I just watch that in pieces on KZfaq too.

I think it's kind of funny how humble all these late night/satire new shows are. Like don't they realize tiktok has started to use them as the basis for their own satire? The trust has shifted from your local news to your favorite late night/satire host and I don't think that has been true long enough for society to be bored of it

well as a millennial I kinda do both. I watch the highlights segments on youtube. Mostly Seth, closer look which is good. Not for news but really what old media is thinking. Then I watch The Hill with Brianna and the conservative guy. So I can get some taste of what the right's views are in response to a lot of leftist points. Since a lot of young conservatives watch it. Then Majority report if I want to know the ins and outs of a particular issue.

I completely except and agree with Roy. In my opinion he should of been next up regardless of the current situation. The other guy they dropped was a good choice as well but his latest issue isnt going away.
