In this video, we take a look at the origins of Spider-Man and discuss why he initially was likely meant to be the monster of the week in a failed anthology comic book rather than a superhero. Enjoy!

I never thought of that, but I think you’re right. Those early ditko panels really make spidey look kind of creepy. Excellent video Dante!

Those 50s stories were lame for sure! AF15 was a breath of fresh air for sure, but I think you’re right, spidery was likely meant to be the monster of the week

Interesting video. I think the early Spider-Mans and Fantastic Fours started off following the basic story structure/template of those monster and horror stories that Stan Lee, Kirby and Ditko had been doing for years at Marvel/Atlas. Super heroes were not overly popular at the time and they probably had to make the stories fit into the format of the current books. After the success of these characters they were able to expand and explore new avenues of storytelling.

Yes, Spidey was a monster of the week! Even the iconic "King Kirby" cover invokes a strange, eerie feeling with the wallcrawler. Btw, here's a thought...what if Amazing Fantasy never failed? Would it still feature Spidey? Also, did Spidey steal the "Amazing" for his own book? Lol?!

Spidey was placed in a failing sci fi title that was to be canceled, thus was then approved by publisher Martin Goodman. Stan and Steve broke all comic boundaries such as a teenager (Spider-man right), a full mask and even spiders (people hate spiders) because if it failed they won't regret it. Turns out it didn't, thus the greatest comic book hero was born. I saw that in the late Stan Lee's interview as the first Raimi Spider-man movie came out.

NerdSync did a brilliant video on this topic, digging in to the influence of Wertham and the comics code on the likes of Spider-Man and Hulk. It's a fascinating thing to think about. I've got a dissertation planned for my Masters Degree in literature that's in a similar vein.

Geekery with Dante D I'd been worried about suggesting it, thinking that my lecturers might think it a bit too low-brow, so to speak. Then they beat me to it! They suggested that I could write about comics as they knew that's what I was into. Suddenly I was a lot more excited about doing a masters. What they said was that there's no list of what counts as literature. If you write about comics as if they are, suddenly they're legitimised as being worthy of study.

I believe he was meant to be a superhero, albeit an imperfect one. Peter Parker was a good person, but initially his powers went to his head and made him into a bully like the ones who tormented him at school. And, he was definitely given his debut in the final issue of a failed magazine in order to be a one-off if he didn’t catch on....because Martin Goodman did not think he would....but, of course, he did. I enjoyed hearing your perspective, and it’s timely because all I want to read at the moment are Marvels from the 1960s and 70s + the Teen Titans from the 1980s. Thanks for another great video, Dante!

Thanks James. Glad you enjoyed. Yes, for me the 70s and 80s Marvels are where it’s at. After a year, I just finished the Amazing spidey omnibus vol 1 and I’m so happy I have it! Can’t wait to dive into more marvel magic from the bronze age

Now that you mention it, it's quite plausible that, indeed, Spider-Man wasn't meant to be a superhero, because: 1) He doen't do anything heroic on his first appearance, except dealing with his uncle's murderer; 2) If I'm not mistaken, Spider-Man was supposed to be a one-off deal in the first place.

Very interesting thoughts! I always loved Spidey not for his "super" abilities but the Peter Parker's very relatable coming of age story. I saw your messaage on my videos bro, if you want to get in touch and schedule something together you're more than welcome to my podcast. I'd love to pick your brain about the Prequels.😎
