Why Strength Matters in Tactical Jobs (Fire, Police, Military)

First off, any athlete will find this extremely relevant! We're tuned into the idea that cardio is the single most important factor to being able to operate at a high level. The US Military for decades has taken the approach that running is more important than strength. But when a soldier is carrying a gear load of 100 lbs on his or her back, that strength becomes important quickly.
The same with first responders. A team member entering a fire with 70 lbs of gear on and working to remove a victim weighing an average of 200 lbs, that strength becomes important. This can be applied to fire, police, swat and EMT.
Check out how Matt Wenning breaks down how a tactical member should be thinking about the balance between strength, cardio and overall fitness in order to be of optimal readiness for duty while limiting the chance for injury.

Sadly most of the training in military is endurance training . Most marines go to the gym and lift heavy when they aren’t working though . It’s not structured into the training though .

Matt C I agree. The emphasis on endurance training is counterproductive.
@lostsaxon7478
@lostsaxon7478 3 жыл бұрын
The reason is because you don't have gyms and all that shit in war. Comfy FOBs that aren't getting hit constantly? Sure. Other than that, ammo, food, water, medical and munitions are far more important. Without regular weight training, that work disappears because you're not getting the same amount/quality of food or sleep let alone gym time.
@lukelyon1781

That's because the military cares about endurance more than raw strength(even though they absolutely do want you to be strong).

Just a normal guy, have a background in wrestling and martial arts. I weigh 130 and I run about 6 miles a week. The other day I was hiking in the mountains around a lake near me and someone in my group sprained an ankle. They weigh 145 and the only way to get them to a safe spot for first responders to get them and transport was to carry them piggy back style up a rocky trail going uphill in the mountains for about 300 yards at times bear crawling up the rocks. As soon as I got home I found this video and I will say you are completely right. Strength is a real game changer in real situations where you may have to carry someone else and possibly the packs too. I will be changing the way I train.🙏

Great video. I am a State Trooper and all we did in the academy was run everywhere and CrossFit like workouts. We had one day a week where we "weight trained" but we took that as a free day and nobody really used it for strength training. When I graduated I was around 170 pounds (lost about 15-20 pounds) and lost strength because I entered the academy with a weightlifting background. Well, when I started to go out on patrol wearing our duty belt (around 20-25 pounds depending on how much equipment you have), ballistic vest, etc, I felt weaker and started to experience back aches. I went the route of powerlifting (powerlifting about 5 years now) and even though I am about 250 pounds I feel stronger, "lighter", and my back doesn't hurt at all from wearing my duty belt. I wish police departments would stop emphasizing being "fit" to "cardio" or crossfit. When I tell people I powerlift/dabble in strongman stuff the first response is "well how fast can you run a mile?" To which I respond "I'm slow af but I can Squat around 450, DL 525 (just hit that PR before this quarantine mess) , and bench close to 350 (I know, not elite but i worked my ass off for those)." Instead of being like wow you are healthy or fit or whatever, everyone says "well you dont do cardio" TLDR: Awesome video and very accurate

Preach brother! I used to do a lot of powerlifting before enlisting in the Marine corps and had to lose a bunch of weight before I could. So I dropped from 265 to 200. Sadly I lost most of my strength with it. Not all but a lot my squat and deadlift were both well over 600 and now pulling 375 is difficult. I've maintained strength better than I expected but there's definitely a difference in how often I seem to feel joint pain, muscle soreness or my bones just feel under uncomfortable pressure. Gonna apply more of this training style.

In your opinion is the type of DL you do important (trap/sumo/conventional) matter when it comes to training for the fire service? Back squats and conventional DL has always ended up injuring where as trap DL and belt squats haven't.

If you go into a fire and try to rescue/carry somebody alone, you are doing it wrong. That's never gonna work out. It's movie bullshit that nobody actually does. Obviously strength is important, but keep it real.
