History is repeating itself, Mark Cuban is failing to build around Luka Doncic. He let Jalen Brunson walk in free agency to the New York Knicks who are once again reaping the benefits of Cubans mistakes. Meanwhile Cubans eyes are dead set on top market names like Kyrie Irving instead of getting the most value for his money and for his team.
@adama2292
@adama2292 Жыл бұрын
Getting Kyrie now could be the only way for Dallas to get a star player next to Luka tbf. They don't have that many picks and they're not super interesting for teams and they clearly won't be able to land anybody in FA. Getting Kyrie was a risky move but they probably need risky moves that pay off now if they don't want Luka to leave
@NRTHKR
@NRTHKR Жыл бұрын
Based on this I predict that Kyrie will walk in free agency. Cuban will then blame their failures on Irving and Irving’s decisions. Even if the Mavs brought Chandler back, I don't think they would have repeated. It was a shorten locked out season and during the off season, Dirk was living it up and didn't really come into basketball shape until the middle of the season. I'm sure they wouldn't have been in a lower seed and had to face the Thunder in the first round, which was still a hard fought sweep. They would probably to in the middle of the pack and possibly made it past the 1st round.

The Mavericks struck while the iron was hot. They had the perfect mix of veterans around Dirk who had all experienced playoff success, but no championships. It was a hungry group that was well put together. The Lakers were in decline after winning the previous two titles, the Thunder were still very young, and the Heat needed a season to fully figure out how the Big Three fit together and what kind of players they needed around them. I all but knew Dallas was going to win it all when they swept the Lakers in the conference semis.

Ngl, it makes sense Cuban was trying to sign Howard. Also, Harden was not in Houston until 2012-2013. With Howard in the paint (who still was a competent floor spacer), with a lethal shooter like Dirk outside, would have been fun to watch. But, due to the injuries of DH at that time, i would say they would have like just 2 years* to win it all again.

It was Deron Williams Cuban wanted. Then Dwight. He blew up a championship team so he can chase a couple of coach killers. And I remember him talking arrogantly about his decision. I also remember the dismayed look on Marion's face when he was asked about Chandler not being re-signed at the beginning of the 2012 season. I don't think they would've repeated but they definitely would've finished in a more respectful way than 7 seed and getting swept in the first round. Losing chandler in the off season really hurt them. They weren’t able to get back to the level defensively that they were when they won and that cost them in the 2012 playoffs. Luckily Chandler came back a few years later but the roster wasn’t the same and Dirk was older.

The 2010-11 Mavericks were a full and complete team. Plenty of veteran players and depth on the bench, with an entire team of guys who knew that it takes every player to make a difference and win. You just don't see that type of mindset these days, and Cuban getting rid of Chandler just for the hope of Dwight Howard was the immediate drop off. You spend an entire season fighting against the super team mentality and win a championship, just to fall victim to it and watch the franchise crumble. A horrid decision by Cuban, but it makes me even happier that Dirk and the players around him seized their chance when they had it in front of them.

This is the same problem with the current Mavs. They don't have a good defensive center. Like they alergic to bigs. Instead of getting one, they traded for another ball dominant guard instead 🤣

Tyson Chandler was huge and I always thought that was their downfall and like many other teams that went deep in playoff somehow don't value their defensive presence as much, earlier days of the bucks on Brogdon and some teams on PJ Tucker etc. Then again I realize Peja retired and also J.J. Barea and Deshawn was huge too which they didn't retain. It would also be nice to wonder if Howard did went during the first or second wooing how would they turn out although the first stint Howard was still recovering from shoulder injury and forced to play at the Lakers, I'm sure the same would happen if he went to the Mavs since they wanna push during Dirk's twilight.

Mark Cuban's biggest weakness as a owner has always been acting like Dallas is LA or NY He's always expected free agents to bail him out and he creates cap space for players who never wanna go to Dallas. Dwight Howard made a good decision going to the Rockets, it's not his fault that Mark Cuban created a plan that involves him going to Dallas. He did the exact same thing with Jalen Brunson, Cuban was so confident that Brunson would resign, so he chose not to extend him early on. Obviously Brunson is gonna choose New York over Dallas, especially when they offered more money.

I remember Dallas got BLASTED by the Lakers a month before the playoffs so when the season was over pundits thought they were the weakest team in the playoffs. The new salary cap rules that were instituted in 2011 made it harder for teams like Dallas to spend more money since they weren’t going to attract big name free agents.

Jalen Brunson averaged 8 ppg on 45% shooting in the 2021 playoff series loss to the Clippers. He had a great year in a contract season and left. But he did not deserve a long term deal after his disastrous 2021 playoff run.
