Jojo Siwa is attempting to rebrand from her Dance Moms, bows, rainbows, and Boomerang era, to her more grown-up era - saying she wants to have her Miley Cyrus Bangerz or Britney good girl gone bad era. She's gone about this by teasing her new song Karma along with a TON of tiktoks. The problem though, is that this isn't going to work, and here's why.

Yeah, being a mature adult or a punk/goth doesn’t mean just putting as much violence, swearing and s-x as possible. There are adults who don’t like that stuff and also there are punks and goths who don’t like that stuff either, especially when it’s used in an excessive way. You can be mature WITHOUT having to do all that stuff. Because maturity isn’t about how much dark and disturbing things you do or say, it’s about having wisdom and kindness

This. She can't do the Miley Cyrus thing because it wasn't just a rebrand for Miley, it was her growing up, learning from life experiences, making a lot of mistakes, and putting all of that into her art & image. Jojo isn't really doing much different than she's been doing the past several years. She grew up as overly managed talent, continued to be, and still is. Nothing we've seen is really her. I doubt she even knows who she is without the machine keeping her coin going. If at any point she steps out of that bubble, THAT'S when we'll get an authentic rebrand that might actually connect with people. Maybe the music will even be good? Ish.

I would take her rebrand more seriously if: a) it wasnt being done amidst controversy and allegations b) if it felt more like authentic expression rather than manufactured (see Alanis Morisette or Miley Cyrus for a successful transition into different art styles) c) if she wasn't an absolute menace on the roads of LA in her tesla wrapped with a collage of her own face

I’d understand if she was a chart topping artist as a child/teenager but she wasn’t so this isn’t gonna hit the way the rebrands of (Britney spears/Christina Aguilera/Miley Cyrus etc) worked because she’s never been on their level artistically. She’s been a product much longer than she’s been an artist so this is a very hard buy that she’s trying to sell.

People often compare her to Miley, but Miley had way more Talent in acting and singing and kept making good songs. Jojo is known for dancing and her latest Performance looked like a seizure. It also felt less fake in Mileys case, no fake tattoos and pretending to be pregnant and buying baby clothes to bait people on social media. Her change also was labeled as "trying too hard" by many but it felt less fake.

I'm trying not to cringe at her, but as a middle-aged adult who watched her grow up on TV and rooted for her, her insta feed is making me cringe a little. It feels forced, and more than a little creepy to be scrolling through as someone 20 years older than her. I personally applaud her not using the eff word. I drop it regularly myself in informal conversation, but I don't write it in my lyrics. And I honestly like the lyrics. It's catchy pop meant to appeal to the pop masses. Me not going back to watch “Can’t Be Tamed” by Miley Cyrus. That was definitely the MV that first raised a few eyebrows before her song “Wrecking Ball”. I remember watching “Can’t Be Tamed” back then and was stunned by it, but still watched it because it was very artsy.

Miley's rebrand had a lot of growing pains and it's more in hindsight that it's clear how much it suits her as an adult artist and entertainer because at the time people *freaked the fuck out* This, though, isn't gonna stick around in a few months, Jojo's team will get bored and switch to another thing when it doesn't payoff.

Miley Cyrus didn't go directly to bangers though, while at Disney she released "I can't be tamed" in 2010. Miley/Hannah transitioned from pop to more of pop with some hip hop elements in the song "The Boy" , and and after leaving Disney is when she released a song with Snoop Dogg that was named something like "Ashtrays and Goodbyes" to then committing to the Bangerz era that we know. So it wasn't a drastis switch, it as gradual. I do agree thought that marketing the change happening was not the best move though. So I think Jojo and her team was trying to go for "I can't be Tamed" Energy which is why everything still sounds similar to the old stuff. I think they achieved what they wanted in: A. Will fans still listen to Jojo despite rebrand B. The song + lyrics are not the best but will this rebrand still allow for money to be made C. Get the general public to listen to Jojo Siwa, (any publicity is good publicity) D. Have people talking about this instead of the the trauma she put onto the girl group. And they succeeded.

I agree if feels very forced and inauthentic. If she wanted that Miley Cyrus Bangerz, Britney Spears I´m A Slave For You kind of image and judging by that costume she wore also bit of KISS sprinkled in it, she should´ve done something completely different. Sonic wise i thing go indie direction would be a great move, bit of glam rock, dance-pop and indie-pop music would be interesting mix in my opinion. When it comes to her looks i think dying her hair and maybe try different hairstyles would be a nice idea, with clothing i would go with something more simple and natural looking at first and slowly transition to Miley Cyrus but no Bangerz but rather 2019 She Is Coming era, that is still edgy but bit more sophisticated.

Virtually everyone said the same things about Miley Cyrus when she rebranded. I was one of them. I think I'll just wait and see in this case.

My biggest issue (besides JoJo as a questionable person) is genuinely… who is this for? JoJo doesn’t want it to be for kids, but who the hell is supposed to be her audience then? I doubt that anyone who’s following her and is over the age of fourteen is following her for original music. Can she even sing? Like actually? Not just talk singing about a boomerang or D.R.E.A.M.s or whatever?

With all of the glitter, I THINK she might be going for a Taylor Swift style, because Taylor does have all of the glitter and sparkles and whatnot while also clearly being very adult, but Jojo is just wildly missing the mark.

Personally, I don’t see what Miley or Britney went though as a rebrand so much as experimentation, especially Miley once she was free from the Mouse, but that’s not what this feels like from Jojo. And the difference I find is that Jojo is so insistent that “this isn’t for kids”, while Miley and Britney just released their content with new ratings and never mentioned that their new stuff was more adult, they let you find out yourself. Rebrands are distinct in you’re told about them, or so I thought.

The song “Rock and Roll Nerd” by Tim Minchin comes to mind. Jojo has had her whole life controlled basically since birth. She has no frame of reference of depth, struggle, rebellion, so everything needs to be manufactured by a team. The forsaken “art by committee”. In the song i mentioned Tim speaks about having to imagine his gf is dead to drum up some angst and depth to be a cool 90’s grunge rocker and not a piano playing comedy nerd.

Do people about a rebranding of Jojo Siwa? Or even about her at all? Miley and Britney were pop icons at this point in their careers and made a huge impact on culture. JoJo was never that big to begin with, she is a reality TV personality and social media influencer.

Dove Cameron's visual rebrand for example was very different but still looked like it's natural, meanwhile Jojo's is all this face paint style make up, glitter clothes, still very child-like imo, like what a child imagines a dark pop star to be, which combined with the kids pop sound just does not help for the rebrand at all..

Why is it that in kids/Disney Hollywood “moving into an adult era”, always _has_ to mean a drastic bad girl/boy transition. I don’t find being an “adult” synonymous with being a bad person at all… Particularly, one with over-sexualisation, drug usage, legal charges, alternative and extreme lifestyle choices and dress choices, i.e. when Miley Cyrus, Britney, Christina, Taylor, Justin Bieber etc. had their Disney/kids era to adult era transitions. Why is THIS always what becoming an adult is meant to be in Hollywood?! Yes, some adults may be like this or some may even dress/behave alternatively while still contributing to society in a meaningful manner but I feel the vast majority of the public would agree that the general concept of becoming an adult is not related to what Hollywood portrays.

A rebrand for her would be to drop some the manufactured-sounding pop and wrote something more reflective and romantic (as opposed to dramatic). Even keep the color scheme and as you said just drop the sequins. She didn’t go to a different genre just a different emotion. I actually think she could’ve gotten away with dying her her a bright color or burgundy because dark hair would cause dove cameron comparisons And all of this needed to happen concurrent with a real apology for XOMG pop. She’s young enough that I highly doubt she was really holding the reigns on their treatment but taking the responsibility anyway but say compensating them directly in some way would’ve been a real sign of maturity.
