US does not want the battle to be in the US Mainland, so it needed an area to face China, and that is Philippines, because it is also cheaper to rebuild. Actually ASEAN is upgrading because they might be dragged in China-US war because Philippines is presenting itself as the future battleground. Prime Minister did say about Philippine should not want her area to be the battleground.

I really would like to see the Philippines acquire modern weaponry to deter bullying tactics by cantankerous aggressive nations, like China. I also understand that these weaponry doesn't come cheap. I just hope the government have the Philippines' economic prosperity in mind, in order to be self-reliant in financing this acquisition and not rely on its allies good graces.

The Philippines has a very large network for diplomacy which allows it a very wide berth for action. Filipinos are fierce warriors more so in their homeland and have decades worth of war training due to its management of its internal security. Given the not so rosy future for Chinese demographics under their communist party and the continuing strength of the ASEAN and regional alliances with Australia, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and India, it would be wise for China to seek peaceful relations and respect its neighbors.

I am so disappointed reading some of the comments of my fellow filipinos. This whole "we just want to live in peace" is too pacifist for my taste and reeks of a lack of deeper understanding of what's at stake. International law has already stated that we own the area that China is being claimed. SI VIS PACEM PARA BELUM. If you want peace, prepare for war. Don't allow yourself to be bullied. Don't be a doormat. The reason why is so blatant about their bullying tactics is that in China's mind The Philippines can't do anything because they dont have the arm power. Therein lies the importance of strategic alliances. We need to establish that should things escalate to an arms struggle, our allies are willing to come to our assistance.

The Philippines and the past leaders after 20th century never did anything to improve military and agricultural systems, most of these things isn't their "priority" in the past which made development very slow we lack military and general technology at least were stepping in little by little, China has been harassing SEAN boats over the past years even our local fisherman is affected, we have a good relationship with China except about maritime territory, since China never acknowledge international boundaries and made their own which pretty much says all of the sea is their territory, which in any way does not look good, i only wish to fix this problem peacefully since war is never a good thing for anyone, PH is never against befriending China, but PH let go of the sea for a long time, but now it should be okay to fight for what is ours and along the way improve our military technology, i wish they also focus on agriculture and lessens import dependability for a more sustainable country

Why? Because the parties to the United Nations agreed to uphold peace. However, some countries just brandish their powers against small countries like Philippines and bullies the same, while forgeting that all states are co-equal. Thus, although the Philippines' Constitution expressly renounces war as a policy, it does not restrain the country from being defensive against intrusions and bullying from other countries like China. What does China expect, that the Philippines just smiles at them back after all these consistent bullying? NO. The Philippines may be small and short in terms of war capabilities, but it values strong ties with other countries and allies who also believe in peaceful and orderly relations between nations. Those who attempt to break that peace must be opposed. Thank you, US, Japan, India, Australia, Etc. For standing up for peace and equality! Thank you for keeping our pact.

I'm impressed that they're buying submarines. That's a long training period. Whoever wins the contract needs to train for several years. They need to provide experienced (most likely recently retired officers and crews) to do the hands on training.

Actually it started during former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo Tenure where a Joint Petroleum Research between the Philippines, China PRC and Vietnam in the Spratly Islands which by the way helped discover the Areas Oil-rich Natural resources who immediately embolden China to occupy more territories in the area. Also add that it was recently concluded by the Supreme Court of the Philippines that the Joint Venture Exploration in the Spratly’s by three countries violated the Philippine Constitution.

With this on going issue i suddenly asked my husband while we're eating dinner "Dad, what if war suddenly broke and require those who's able to fight for the country, will you run or sacrifice yourself willingly?" without hesitation he answered "we're already in our thirties going forties, we don't have baby yet, I will voluntary participate just like what the people in Ukraine does for their country". I just smile and told him "yeah, me too I'd rather fight than let the oppressor succeed".
