There is a phrase that pops up quite frequently in library marketing which has bothered me for quite some time: "More than books." Other than a few people I work with at NoveList, I thought I was the only person who felt this way. But I'm not! A librarian wrote an eloquent piece about it this week, and we'll talk about it in this episode of The Library Marketing Show.

I love Misha Stone and Becky Spratford they are amazing librarians. Misha gave us Australian (NSW) librarians a talk on the fantasy genre and Becky on horror and they both did an amazing job.

I like "Books, Materials, and Beyond"! That covers our physical and digital collections, online research options available inside and outside the library, community engagement opportunities (museum passes, etc.), entertainment platforms, and everything else! Our cardholders have so many opportunities available that we have started teaching monthly courses on all the things a library card can do beyond checking out books.

Sorry it rubbed you the wrong. I agree that changing the words to “books and more”, as opposed to “more than just books”. We are also trying to address the stereotype of libraries as book repositories. However, books are not always our brand. I don’t think it is pitting one against the other. It’s not the main focus for academic libraries. For some academic libraries, our services may be more important than our (book) collection. I think our elevator speech “more than just books” tries to dismantle stereotypes that we are more than book repositories but we provide services and we have human information experts.
