I think I understand the critique, but at the same time, to cut out characters would be to cut out large parts of the plot. The panoply of characters is a way of highlighting the complex social enmeshment in the town (and, by extension, in our country). I found the book masterfully written and would happily give it 6 out of 5 stars to balance our the one-star review :)

Do you think reels created on Canva and posted to Instagram will also be suppressed?
@AngelaHursh6 күн бұрын
No. I think it's mainly a play to keep watermarks from other social media platforms from getting more play on their platform.

Yes, the characters did confuse me, and I have just started reading books in my 40s. I thought it was just me since I have less experience in reading fiction and non-fiction books. I believed I wasn't able to read them well until I saw your video and heard an experienced novel reviewer feeling the same way.

Thank you, Angela, for always keeping us up on the latest changes that impact our marketing. I'm not sure how this will impact what we're doing on Instagram. We definitely won't be sharing TikToks and we will need to rethink our reelsto keep them under 90 seconds.

I am so sorry you could not finish it. It did have a lot of characters, but I thought each character aided in understanding the culture of the time. Listening to it may have helped me over come all the intricacies .

Sorry it rubbed you the wrong. I agree that changing the words to “books and more”, as opposed to “more than just books”. We are also trying to address the stereotype of libraries as book repositories. However, books are not always our brand. I don’t think it is pitting one against the other. It’s not the main focus for academic libraries. For some academic libraries, our services may be more important than our (book) collection. I think our elevator speech “more than just books” tries to dismantle stereotypes that we are more than book repositories but we provide services and we have human information experts.

I love Misha Stone and Becky Spratford they are amazing librarians. Misha gave us Australian (NSW) librarians a talk on the fantasy genre and Becky on horror and they both did an amazing job.

I like "Books, Materials, and Beyond"! That covers our physical and digital collections, online research options available inside and outside the library, community engagement opportunities (museum passes, etc.), entertainment platforms, and everything else! Our cardholders have so many opportunities available that we have started teaching monthly courses on all the things a library card can do beyond checking out books.

I agree with @crVickieHicks! I would love to to see this policy, too!
I love just about everything David Sedaris does. I would've enjoyed the audio version of "Carnival" a lot more if Tracey Ullman was not used. Based on her performance I got the idea that she came in without any kind of preparation. For example, when portraying David's father she sounds nothing like David's portrayal. DAVID knows what his father sounded like. And DAVID, being Lou's biological son, would already naturally sound somewhat like his father. So David's rendition of his father should be the example to go by. If Tracey had listened to David's version of his father she would have had a pretty good idea of what Lou sounded like. And yet... she uses a completely wrong voice to portray him. It makes no sense to do that and it comes off like she's unfamiliar with David's work. And then there's her emphasizing the wrong words in sentences, as if she's reading the material for the first time. She also makes odd choices for various voices, like American males, which she often made very low and slow. All in all, just an unsettling and unsatisfying performance of David's book.

I did actually finish it because it was my book clubs pick but I did not enjoy one bit of the experience for very similar reasons.as you. As I was listening to it I would get so lost in the "flashback" sequences I would forget what was even going on and have to restart whole chapters until I just stopped doing that half way through and just let it play on despite my utter confusion where it was going most of the time. Alas...

Thank you for always sharing relevant topics! I understand and have had great success with targeted email marketing. However, I wonder how to address the issue of educating people on all the library has to offer them beyond books. All libraries constantly hear: "I didn't know the library had that." Even coming up with titles for email categories is a challenge since people don't know what they don't know. Any suggestions on taking a combination approach to emails?

Dear Angela, a one-star review is not appropriate just because you can’t keep up with the book. This one was beautifully written and richly descriptive of a community and a time in American history. It is indeed a difficult book but also an important one. You may deprive yourself if you wish, but I encourage you not to suggest others do the same.

I agree that it's complex an sometimes confusing. But it's a novel, not a TV show. Just go back and re-read if you have to, take notes if you have to. It pays off if you invest a little effort.

We have a spreadsheet that all programming details go into (date, time, name of program, and a marketing blurb). Those of us who handle promotions, just use that blurb over and over again. Works like a charm!

What we have started doing is reaching out to other community organizations and have asked them to post in their space or announce in their newsletters. Like was mentioned by Angela, we consider the audience intended for the event and than target that audience accordingly. One thing we have not done and I have been considering is asking area churches to include events in their bulletins. I would appreciate your thoughts on that concept.

On my second read and catching so much that I missed first time around. In first read, I focused on the Octopus, because I just wanted to reach out and touch him, hug him and set him free. I got a little distracted, admittedly. Now that I know the ending, I can focus on all the subtext. Wonderful! Masterful.

The end, oh my, when the threads come together. And we find out who was the main character, around whom the others played supporting roles. Enough flesh on the bone to go back and reread. And, like most great art, find depth and shining details that didn’t quite come together upon first reading. I finished last night, and consider this among my favorites. Please give it another go when you have time.

I am sorry you couldn't keep up with the characters and focus. Maybe you should stick to simpler books. I enjoyed the book immensely and had no problems with keeping the characters straight. I agree with the commenter who advised you to keep away from Tolstoy. This book is great. I give your review one star!

As a solo librarian, I need to learn a lot of things re marketing/PR. One thing I need help with is how to connect our Facebook and Instagram accounts so I can easily post to both. I tried to follow instructions online but it wasn't very clear. I have no funds for marketing so can't spend money (except my own which I do occasionally do in a pinch). Thanks for this fascinating video---will have to learn about cinemagraphs....:)

Anytime we do a giveaway/contest. We ask for feedback or their favorite book we get 100's of responses. Which we can turn into content... top 5 responses etc. Unfortunately, the last few times, the post gets hacked. Any ideas to circumvent hacks are welcome! I know being hacked in these cases is a sign of success (high engagement) so win/lose.
