In Phoenix, they said Dumbledore had been removed from his position as Chairman/Supreme Mugwump of the International Confederation of Wizards, as well as Chief Warlock of the Wizengamut. You might recall the line that Dumbledore said he didn't care as long as they didn't take him off the Chocolate Frog cards.

@@kadindarklord I doubt. By being on Chocolate Frog card, he's being known to every wizarding population. Even more importantly, wizarding kids are getting to know him as a wize and good guy. The power of such publicity is that most wizard will naturally accept Dumbledore as a personl to follow when they grow up.

Maybe in future movies they'll do somethign because they kept hinting with something with Jacob and i thought when he met that old woman at the german minersty and he said the that man looked like his uncle i realy thought they would do ATLEAST hint more on jacob's real background.

Okay after having watched this movie so many times over (I am so in love with it) I have a theory. The quilin did bow to Newt it just wasn't the children but the mother. If you look very closely Newt manage to walk back to the mother after her first child is taken. There he finds the twin and you can see her glow as her second child crawl into Newts arms. Even as he speaks to her she keeps glowing till she dies. I'll theories this was her bow to Newt she was just to weak to do it in full but she bowed to show her daughter she would be safe with this human and honor his true heart.

I think it should have bowed to Newt or Jacob. Newt because it'd prove that he is just as good hearted on the inside as he shows on the outside. No that there was any doubt, but it'd be so awesome to see that this is why he is so loving and understanding of magical creatures and why they're so receptive. As for Jacob, it would be so cool for the wizards present to see that even a No-maj has value to a creature as prevalent as the Qilin. It'd prove that no matter what anyone says, non magical people are just as valuable as wizards.

Yeah, with their conclusion of the qilin basically using that logic to determine who was worthy it makes me think that he imbued the mirror with qilin blood or something.

I was reminded of his “justification” of having the Elder Wand. He claims it’s to keep it away from bad people or something which is a lame excuse.

@@natashamariano2790 well Dumbledore keeping the elder wand is million time better than some like Grindlewand or Voldemort. And someone weak like Harry or Newt who don't have the ability to protect it from getting into wrong hands. Because elder wand doesn't make the wizard unbeatable.

I appreciate Dumbledore as much as everyone else does but I was unbelievably frustrated when the Quilin bowed to him. He's definitely selfless and good but power is his greatest weakness and the Quilin would sense that. This moment felt like it was made for the bigger cinema audience but not for the fans who are deeply familiar with the details of the characters.

They doubled down on Minerva McGonagall being a professor at Hogwarts despite the fact that she shouldn't have been born by the time the movie was set in. Unsurprised they went for the bigger, more casual fandom than the more diehard ones.

I think both minerva and the qilin bow are crumbs for the next 2 movies to wrap up... like when we heard about mundungas fletcher ar least 2x in the 3 preceding books before we met him. Mrs figg was more than Harry's cat lady neighbour/babysitter... but we didn't know that till book 5.

Personally I feel like it was a quick write... I thought it would have been more interesting if the qilin bowed to newt... his character is the most whole hearted, but since the hp timeline has already been placed WB has to work with that timeline and not create a multiverse aspect by veering from said timeline. So I feel options were limited on who the qilin could bow too. It's just frustrating when there has already been a story written.

Well seeing that the Qilin could sense and was in fact a seer I think it made a sentient choice by picking Dumbledore. He has the good qualities and some grey for sure but he was probably the best option to lead the wizarding world against Grindelwald.

I disagree, I think it was perfect for the Qilin to bow before Dumbledore. Precisely the act of him not accepting the fact that the Qilin chose him, despite his power and his ambitions, is what categorizes him as pure of heart. Who else, in Dumbledore's shoes, with Dumbledore's power, skills, knowledge, and ambition, would have not accepted the role if the Qilin bowed to them? I can't think of anyone. This scene is at the very heart of what Dumbledore says about not seeking power. Dumbledore is pure of heart, is a capable leader, but does not trust himself to carry out that role.

I had hoped there'd be a twist where it would bow for Jacob. I mean, imagine it. That could've been quite the change for the wizarding world if he'd been chosen. Plus, the man definitely would've done a good job. He had a good heart and was so smart when he needed to be. And he'd have had Queenie by his side to help him. That could've been such a kickass ending.

I assume that if it had bowed to Jacob they would just go back to voting instead of using the Qilin. I love Jacob and even though he is pure of heart he still isn’t a wizard and thus probably shouldn’t lead

That seems like the type of thing that would drive people back to Grindelwald. A muggle ruling them? They can't even may a wizard or witch in the US at this time. I'm also certain that would already be disallowed in the requirements to run for office.

Thank you for pointing out Dumbledore’s moral grayness. The fact that he can be so easily swayed into a Big Good or a Big Bad is one of the best aspects of him. He’s not perfect. He tries to build up others, for the most part, because he knows he can’t fill that moral role.

That's kinda the price of being in his position though, take for example the fact he knew very well he had to die. He openly welcomed death from Severus as to protect Draco, and while Dumbledore didn't do everything good, everything he did was for the greater good. His whole plan which I don't believe he planned on Severus dying, was solely to stop the greatest threat to everyone, however he couldn't let anyone know besides his most loyal and trusted follower (at least it seems that way) Severus Snape so that his plan wouldn't be revealed.

The quilin could have bowed to jacob, newt, and queenie even and it would have made a lot of sense. Also not only did santos remove the curse from jacob, she was also the only person who did not shoot at grindlewald as he made his escape.

@@matejmatuska6700 - Newt is 35, in this film. Which is technically old enough to run for president, in the USA. The reason he seems so much younger, is due to Eddie Redmayne interpreting the character possibly being autistic. There is actually a deleted scene, that would have foreshadowed another potential candidate for the bow…. Newt’s brother, Theseus. Which was subtly still alluded to in the final cut of the film, the morning of the election. When Theseus cradles the Qilin, while helping Newt lower her into the case.

@@matejmatuska6700 While Jacob could never lead it, his selection would likely provoke controversy in Grindlewald’s reign. Imagine a moment if a man or woman ran for president of a country, they’re prejudiced and hope to create a society that eliminates or largely causes suffering for the people they believe are lesser when all of a sudden a homeless man from that faction of people puts his name in last minute. While there’s no real chance for the homeless man to win his entry would cause people to second guess themselves.

I think it was alluded to when Newt says, "Lally said something earlier about most of us being ultimately imperfect. But even if we make mistakes, terrible things, we can try to make things right. And that's what matters, trying." And Dumbledore does try.

Just a quick side-note, Supreme Mugwump might not be Dumbledores CURRENT job, but a past one. You often call former politicians by their title even after they leave office, as a form of reverence and honor. Dumbledore could be the retired leader of the UN equivalent for wizards.

yeah but if so the form of address is wrong. For example Obama might address a letter 'President Obama' but he wouldnt say in a list of titles 'president of the United States'. This infers current titles. I think they just changed what supreme mugwump meant and what the ICW means to the world. They seem to be a body simular to the UN in the HP books where they dont have any power over national politics. So if dumbledore was the president of the UN he wouldnt have any real power over the UK governments policies. If instead the ICW was the supreme power over the wizarding world why wouldnt they be involved in both wars against voldy?

The most unbelievable part of a movie about a secret magical society holding an election which involves a wizard know as one of the worst of all time and only being stopped from gaining total power by the twin of the magic dead enchanted deer bowing to their ex lover is that the magic deer deemed a politician pure of heart.

I wish we saw more of the politician that people were rooting for. Because she seemed like she could start out as pure of heart and grow corrupt or she could be a third party candidate everyone neglects until now. I don’t know. While I agree with you, it would be fun to see if politics ran differently in the Wizarding world where they do good to do good. But that is the idealist in me.

Hey guys, I'm surprised y'all didn't think of this but I looked at the bow like this: It was confirmation that it wasn't Albus who killed Ariana. As we know, he never recognized it throughout his life. The quilin can see the soul, and if you kill it damages the soul. His soul is intact and whole and pure. Anyways, that's how I saw it. Maybe I'm way off base. Excellent video as always fellas!

Now that's an interesting idea! But I think the whole killing damaging your soul thing means intentional murder. If Dumbledore cast a killing curse during the duel at all then does it actually matter whether or not the curse hit Arianna?

I'm from Brazil, and both the actress who played Santos on the movie as well as the character herself are brazilian. Brazilian Harry Potter fans were absolutely thrilled by the idea that we would finally see the first brazilian wizard on screen, so the film was very much waited in our country for this reason. It was a huge deal for us. So, it was kind of bummer that she barely spoke during the movie (but this is what usually happens with brazilian actors who play a part on hollywood movies, no matter how talented they are...). But at least the first brazilian witch is pure of heart! So, yeah!

@@mabibarros This is the worst most lip service representation they could have given her though. The movie barely gives her a name, gives her no memorable lines and just arbitrarily puts her in a position of power by the end without exploring her character at all despite it being one of the closing plot points. You can't really blame SCB for joking about the character, even the movie makers barely recognized her existence in their own film.

I invite you to watch some youtube Brazilian channels, like Caldeirão Furado or Observatório Potter to see for yourself how proud we are to watch Maria Fernanda Cândido as Vicência Santos - both channels have English subtitles. Representation matters, even the tiny ones you (or SBC) don’t judge worth it. Anyways, thank you for your kind answer and contribution to the discussion.

I dont think The Qilin's blood can show The future. I think The movie seems to show Grindelwald's visions in reflections, as it did with The Qilin's blood.

I've seen many people argue that it would've made more sense for it to bow to Jacob or even Newt and I agree. While some people exaggerate the whole "Dumbledore is evil" thing, it's a real stretch to call him pure 💀

According to Chapter 5 of Order of the Phoenix, Dumbledore was removed from his position as Supreme Mugwump when the Ministry denounced him by refusing to admit Voldemort's return after the Triwizard Tournament. This means that he wouldn't have had the power override Fudge when he is attempting to throw Harry out of Hogwarts for casting the Patronus in front of Dudley and all of the subsequent issues that occur during Harry's 5th year at the school with Dolores Umbridge. At that point, Dumbledore no longer had his position of power. He re-entered the Confederation after the return of Voldemort was confirmed and Fudge resigned, but he did not assume his previous position as Supreme Mugwump

I love the suggestion that Jacob should have been chosen by the qilin. In addition to the points you made that would also mean that purity of heart does not have to translate to political leadership; it would mean that democracy should not be "outsourced" to a fantastic beasts, but rather the magical community has to make their own choice and be accountable for it. Having a creature make the choice for you seems to defeat the purpose of elections!

I have never thought of the Supreme Wugwump as having much power, I think of them a bit more like the Secretary General of the United Nations. I think that the position would carry a lot of influence, and is, in a sense, the leader of the magical world, but only in the sense that they try to find a direction that the members of the international confederation of wizards will be willing to follow. More like the chair of a meeting than the president of the world. This explains how Dumbledore can’t order Fudge around, and it makes it much more likely that Dumbledore would accept the position, it also mirrors the way that international organisations work in the muggle world, I don’t see why this would be a change that Dumbledore makes. You might then ask, why is Grindelwald so keen on taking this position in SoD then, it’s already established that Grindelwald has a ‘silver tongue’ and can be incredibly persuasive, speaking with the perceived authority of the supreme mugwump would surely only boost that, not to mention allow him to reach a much wider audience, the position doesn’t need much hard power to be effective, Grindelwald has shown before how well he can use soft power, oddly similar to Dumbledore in that way actually.

I think there should be a deleted scene where it bowed to Jacob and no one else saw it, maybe not even Jacob himself. But I think that Dumbledore's acceptance of responsibility for his actions and his willingness to turn down power make him worthy of the Qilin's bow.

We know that Albus sees himself as being unworthy but maybe what makes him worthy is the fact that he believes himself to be unworthy, and people are allowed to have misconceptions about them but they may not be true.

And Dumbledore is truly pure of heart because he is able to recognize the effects his choices have on others ability to make choices in their own agency. Most people don't notice this and this is why most that seek power don't deserve it. Dumbledore learns this and comes to fully understand it over time and the qilin knows this about his past present and future, which is why the qilin recognized the pure heart within Dumbledore. Because grindelwald's line "for the greater good" is from dumbledores letter to him at durmstrang but grindelwald's and Dumbledores perceptions of this statement are polar opposites.

Imagine that much power with unmatched opponent not even grindlewald and voldemord, If he wanted then he could have life he wished for himself, stil he foUght the love of his life GrIndlewald, drank that Torturous posion in half blood prince, even sacrificed himself to save Draco Malfoy (towhom he saved from getting lost In the Dark path) all these for juatice and for well being of others. Yeah dumbledore is a mortal man thats why he often made mistakes thats what makes him more human tgan any other persons .... I personally think i have never seen any character as strong as him as if like he always has something in his sleeve to show in any moments , Dumbledore's presence is the reason why we have harrypotter and fantastic beast series this interetsting. Just watch harry potter 1 to 7 all dumbledore scenes, evervyone will know how imperative Dumbledode was to the magical community.

Absolutely. I hated the way Michael Gambon played Dumbledore-like some mad scientist. He never read the books and therefore TOTALY missed the brilliant nuances of Dumbledore and his character. Dumbledore was a brilliant, charismatic, humble, eccentric, funny, loving, empathetic, kind, gentle, powerful, and a warmly appreciative man with solid boundaries. He accepted nothing but the total truth from everyone, including himself, no matter what that truth may be. He never shirks from his responsibilities, holds no prejudices, accepted all magical creatures-no matter what their origin. He protects those who don’t even know they need protecting. He never ever passes the buck on to someone else to face the consequences of his actions. Dumbledore is resourceful and he earns the trust and loyalty people put in him. He is simply one of the most multi faceted characters in literature. I loved in Fantastic Beasts how when the Ministry of Magic came to his classroom and they told the kids to clear out, in unison, they all looked to Dumbledore for instructions. These big scary guys with official badges come in, and the kids only see Dumbledore. The quillin chose him because he is a natural born leader. And a good, trustworthy person to boot.

The blood lets you look into the future? I thought this was just an artistic choice to show how Grindelwald is looking into the future. I think I remember two other scenes where he looks at something reflective and sees the future in it.

Agreed. He needed to eliminate the only qilin he knew of and put it under his control. He doesn't need the blood to see the future. Plus it was too confusing to think he had painted the windows with qilin blood just so he could keep seeing the future.

I also thought the Quilin might bow to Jacob, but I wasn't super surprised when it bowed to Dumbledore. Though both Jacob and Newt are people who are very pure of heart, when they were explaining the Quilin, it seemed they were referring to when they're born, a powerful leader was going to be needed/called upon or something. So it bows to the one who is pure of heart and a leader. Neither Jacob or Newt are leaders, even though they are pure of heart. Dumbledore is a good leader.

I think the bow is meant only for those who are interested in leadership. Quilin can see the future, and that's why it's just telling who is the most worthy of the mantle. You have to want to take the lead to be a leader. It's not just about the pureness of heart, but also about wanting to make the hard decisions.

This would also make sense with when Dumbledore basically said "there must be someone else here" that the qilin then went on to select the 2nd best leader. Like it went "ok, this person's turned it down, who's next?" And it didn't go to another random person, but one of the official candidates.

I feel like originally the qilin was meant to bow down to Jacob but then they changed their mind which is why it seems to be set up but ultimately doesn't happen. I think this is because how can Grindelwald's 'greater good' argument is defeated if a muggle can be so pure of heart that they could theoretically lead the wizarding world

Dumbledore also believes one other thing that these sorts of magical things (the sorting hat, this new creature) don't seem to account for: people aren't static. An 11 year old sorted into Slytherin won't always be the embodiment of ambition and cunning. Someone like him, who made bad decisions before, isn't locked into being terrible. Or good.

I totally agree it should have been Jacob. I think you're forgetting one small thing with the title of Supreme Mugwump with Dumbledore. Every former president of the United States is still referred to as President Reagan, President Carter Etc. Just because it says Supreme Mugwump in his title does not mean he is still Supreme Mugwump. It just doesn't have the word "former" in front of it.

I think it has much more to do with the soul. Dumbledore does ultimately only wish good things to happen, but he's willing to do morally grey things to win the battle. So, i still think he has a pure heart, but his soul might be troubled.

When you start to consider what "pure of heart" implies in a leader, it makes a very good fit for Dumbledore. As he is aware of the consequences and the sacrifices neccessary, and he goes the extra mile to let the person themselves volunteer for it, rather than use force or other means. He leads by example and he tries to be what he wants others to be. You can never not have done anything bad, but your heart can hold on to these deep experiences and feel guilt over insecurity to help guide you to be better. And honestly I believe this is where Dumbledore "learns" this valuable lesson that power is best bestowed on those who do not seek it, but is chosen to wear it. Where he is finally confirmed in the fact that he is doing what he should be doing, and thus accept more responsibility on his judgement. Now he has realized what it is most important about being a person in power. Also the quillin can't have any idea about the tremendously conveluted plan Dumbledore would have to execute some 40 years later. It judges him on that day, where he stood and what he desired right there. And yes it is probably also the inspiration to his hiding of the Philosophers Stone in the Mirror of Erised.

Lol, this is a bad take in one regard. Dumbledore manipulates everyone worse than littlefinger does in game of thrones. Just because he doesn't use force doesn't mean he doesn't exploit literally everyone around him so that they can't say no to him. It's not a choice if you're making it because you don't understand the full details. Dumbledore manipulates children for years so that they have no choice but to want to do what he says and he lulls them into believing in him almost exclusively by lying and limiting their information. Them "volunteering" is totally irrelevant. Just because he doesn't physically threaten them doesn't mean they have freedom of choice.

Dumbledore has very high Machiavellian tendencies and does manipulate people though it is in order to achieve what he believes is the best for magical society. He never could really have properly functional interpersonal relationships, but this ability to remove ones own desires and emotions could be a very important quality in a political figure or leader. Honestly i havent even watched this movie because i dont really like any of the new material that came out after the books or original movies, but my take on dumbledore is that he is doing what he believes needs to be done and is the right thing to do for "the greater good". His intentions are pure in a sense, but he uses dishonest means to achieve them. Hes a really interesting character. I wouldnt glorify him, but i just think the gray area of if he is he a good person or a bad one is fascinating.

If that was the case then the qilin would be awfuly tired from bowing all day at the many pure of heart magical people and also children and babies who are the purest of heart. I always thought the international confederation of wizards was like the UN, or maybe even more like the League of Nations. So Dumbledore wouldn’t really hold any true authority over Fudge. If it was like the League of Nations than it was pretty powerless over any country’s ministry of magic.

I thought that too, but then why was Grindlewald so keen on the position? I suppose it might give him influence, or easier access to the heads of the magical world (or in Europe, anyway) but it wouldn't give him any real power. I think there are simply a lot of very, very thin plot points and large plot holes in this series and that's it, honestly.

Exactly this. The ICW is essentially the UN/LoN of the Wizarding World. The Supreme Mugwump may have had some authority to pardon an international criminal like Grindelwald but they were certainly not directly interfering in the ruling of the member nations.

The only thing about bowing before Jacob is, if that had ever happened, it most definitely would have been mentioned somewhere in the HP books. Even if the muggle was unnamed, if there was ever one elected to any Wizarding seat of power, it would have been a major contention to purebloods for the rest of time.

The Qilin doesn’t decide who gets the seat of power, it only decides who is pure of heart. It’s up to the wizards to actually vote who they want as leader. So even if the Qilin had bowed to Jacob, it wouldn’t have made him the leader.

I saw it as even though he had indeed wanted to come out of secrecy and rule over the muggles his intentions was never to be cruel and rule with an iron fist but more bring them out of the shadows and into the light it was Grindelwalds ideas that warped his mind for a short time until his sister's death brought him back down to earth and he is in fact pure of heart and would be the best to lead them it's just dumbledore doesn't trust himself with that sort of position because of what happened with grindlewald

That's EXACTLY what I thought. They even put in a scene where they were explaining to Jacob about the Qilin being able to tell if one was pure of heart or not. I think it was a big missed opportunity for the story for the Qilin not to bow to Jacob. Of course, I think the first movie was the best because of Jacob, the second movie was Okay, Jacob pulling it up to be Ok, and the third was a little better than the second because of the phenomenal ending for Jacob and Queenie during which I started to cry. Without Jacob the second and third movies wouldn't have been worth watching in my opinion.

Oddly enough, according to a deleted scene, that is alluded to the morning of the election. The Qilin is actually bonded most with Theseus, who is in a leadership position as Head British Auror. Which was something, in the deleted scene, that surprised Newt.

The Qilin picks out of availability & actually potential. In using the Qilin in other magical elections it doesn’t walk away from the wizards running for the position, it choses one of them. This was a very unusual situation when the Qilin walked into the crowd & picked Dumbledore out of actual potential & of a good heart ♥️

Making this comment during the opening logo sequence. Dumbledore's motivations are pure. He wants the greatest good for the greatest number of people. It's part of why he avoids taking political power. However, he doesn't avoid power, altogether. He put himself in a position to influence generations of young wizards and eventually forms his own private militia to combat Voldemort. He's also literally the smartest man in nearly any room he enters. He's compelled to lead for these reasons. Sometimes a leader has to make hard choices to enact their plans. He's trying to avoid personally benefit from his actions as much as possible. I think there must be more than "pure heart" with the qilin. After all, "pure heart" doesn't seem like the only qualification for a leader. It might not even be the best one. Of course the term can be highly subjective Newt may have a pure heart, but does he really have what it takes to be a political leader of any sort? He doesn't even want to lead the little band of misfits he's part of. Tina is more suited to leadership than Newt, in fact.

It's probably more along the lines of who would actually be a good leader and has pure intentions in terms of leadership- that's sort of the impression I got in the film and would make sense with it choosing Dumbledore. It's just the way it's phrased in the film really obfuscates it.

It is explicitly stated they only bow to those with pure hearts. The wizards adopted that to mean that those with pure hearts are suitable leaders. The only thing the qilin judges is the pureness of the heart.

I noticed this during my watch in the movie theater: if you watch Credence’s hand as he ascends the stairs to the Qilin event near the end of the movie, he places it on a “wooden” pillar. But his hand makes a dent as it comes in contact, which shows it is actually fabric that he’s leaning on.

I would argue that while he does raise harry that way harry is the only person we've met with a more pure heart then Dumbledore. Newt I have a feeling while completely good is to mistrusting of humans. Dumbledore understands his flaws while actively working towards the good of all. Willing to get help when needed and if necessary able to sacrifice what is needed.

Dumbledore is pure of heart. He makes questionable decisions, but he always ends on a pure note. He sought power with his bf, but he realized the toxic relationship and went against his love even tho it’s lw killing him inside. He raises Harry for slaughter, but comes to care and love Harry. Being pure of heart doesn’t mean you can’t do wrong.

I agree with you! Only just one thing about Harry - he didn’t raise him for slaughter. He probably didn’t even know that Harry was a horcrux until the latest HP books. And even then he knew that Harry will survive. Albus never sacrificed Harry, but Harry couldn’t know it at the time. This moment is misinterpreted a lot.

Snape himself was horrified upon learning that, as Harry sees in Snape's memories. Yes, it was possibly later in the series, but the most powerful wizard of the generation involves himself in the care of the infant child who survived an unsurvivable curse, you know he's going to have theories about how that happened, especially over the intervening 15 years. He already suspected about the Horcuxes between books 5 and 6, because he goes after the ring, he just needs Slughorn's confirmation in book 6 because he needs to know he's not going to get Harry killed in vain. And while he needed Harry to chose Horcuxes over Hallows, Dumbledore himself was well aware of where the all the Hallows were in the year preceding his death. He said in the King's Cross station he *hoped* Harry would put it all together and have a chance to survive, but he didn't know for sure, and he could have taken greater care to make sure Harry had the Hallows if he put Harry's survival first. He put stopping Voldemort above the life of a teenager. It worked out because of Dumbledore's plans and Harry's selflessness and plot armor. But it doesn't make Dumbledore blameless or means that he knew he wasn't taking massive risks with Harry's life.

@@lisalivesay9084 Harry didn’t survive because of the Hallows. He survived the second time because Voldemort used his blood in HP4, and because he was willing to die. It was the combination of these two factors. Dumbledore knew (strongly suspected) it since HP4. I believe Albus realized during books 4-6 that Harry is a horcrux himself. But this mistake that Voldemort did gave Harry protection. And the reason for him surviving the first time as a child was always clear, it was Lily’s protection. Therefore, when Albus talks to Snape, it LOOKS like he sacrifices Harry but in reality it wasn’t the case. He just needed for Harry to believe he was truly going to die. And that willingness to die was precisely what saved him. So basically to help Harry survive Albus needed to pretend in his conversation with Snape so that Harry’s sacrifice will be sincere and so that it’ll work. When Harry talks with him in Kings Cross, he understands it all. He practically says it, these exact words. That Dumbledore knew that he will survive. Also, Harry made a lot of choices and accepted those risks himself. He is a hero. He was destined to face Voldemort. And Dumbledore helped him prepare for that as best as he could. He definitely cared about Harry, and did his best to make sure that Harry will survive and win.

Newt, or Jacob make sense, if she hadn't joined another candidate I think would be Queenie, she fell for Jacob almost instantly, and helped Newt see he was a better match with Tina (a giver), rather than Leta (a taker), as well she only joined Grindlewald because she wanted equal rights for wizards and muggles. The only thing other than joining the wrong cause, is using Amortentia on Jacob, the reason behind it was only to control his actions, he loves her either way. If the Qilin were in the HP creatures I know for sure some characters that deserve a Qilin bow.

I have a feeling they were tracking and keeping an eye on Newt when the Grindlewald's followers knew he looks for Fantastic Beasts thus they found that Qilin.

Considering Dumbledore did not defeat Grindelwald for another 13 years, in the FB timeline, there is still plenty of time for people to grow to hate him. Plus, Rita Skeeter was not exactly slandering him. Since, what she wrote was true.

I just thought it was a Oracle-and-Socrates type of thing. The Qilin doesn't need to choose Jacob or Newt, because they are humble, but it challenges Dumbledore because of what is yet to come. This leaves a lasting impression on him for years to come. Influencing several people's development, like that of Hagrid, McGonagall, and Snape... who would not necessarily be where they were and how they were if not for him ... even pre-Harry Potter.

Personally I think the Quilin would deffinetly how to harry and Newt. Also I think it's interesting that the two students that Dumbledore admires most are the ones who don't care about power, they just do what they can to help others even if it means bending or breaking the rules. As Dumbledore said "perhaps those best suited to power are those who don't go looking for it"

5:20 . . . Grindelwald can See The Future (You just reminded us on it). He could have seen Newt founding it. So therefore he would have know where... and apparition and stuff is a thing in the magical world. Otherwise - Yeah and Why wasn't it more heavily guarded - is a bigger question. And Or Actually Actually (not having seen the whole video yet... this video) I Also thought it might have bowed before Jacob. Then one of the other 2 (who ever they now are and stuff)

After all these SCB years, still love hearing "Alas, Earwax." And I certainly agree that Patty Santos is absolutely the way to identify her character. One of the main things they could have done to really make a splash (and justify a previous theory) is somehow introduce that JK is the long lost descendent of Hufflepuff. Alas, earwax.

Except Supreme Mugwump is probably more like the leader of the United Nations. Has power to mediate between two or more countries but doesn't have the power to directly enact things within another countries borders. I would assume that generally the Supreme Mugwump is also a Minister of Magic within their own country like the German one was. The fact that Dumbledore wasn't and didn't immediately step up to become the Minister of Magic (and as the Supreme Mugwump it would likely be almost automatic that he would get it, as it would grant your country a lot more barging power) is likely why Fudge was always so scared of Dumbledore taking his job.

I think the only thing we know for sure, is that based on how the first 3 movies have gone so far, Santos will not be important or even in the next movies (if there is any). Every single movie seems to shed the characters and plot of the last. as for the Dumbledore being supreme mugwomp thing, I think the chocolate card lists his achievements, so at some point Dumbledore was Supreme Mugwomp but has since retired from that roll. It doesn't seem to be stated in the movie or series anywhere how long that position is held for. The guy who currently held the roll in this movie does not seem old, or sick, or failing in any way, in fact most people seem to like the guy, but he is still stepping down from the roll. So it could be like a President roll where no matter what you can not exceed a certain amount of time in the position. So my best guess is that Something happens to Santos, everyone remembers the Qilin bowing for Dumbledore, and either before or just after beating Grindlewald he is elected to that position until a new election can be held in which he does not run. Sorta like how Kingsley was named Temporary Minister of Magic in Deathly Hallows.

I was really hoping and thinking that Jacob was going to receive the bow, and if not Newt. When Dumbledore was saying there should be another, I thought for sure it would go to one of them at that point! As for who the Qilin would bow to, Harry would be one, for obvious reasons, along with Luna, Neville, and I’d say Hagrid, cuz all of those are pure of heart if you ask me!

The more you want power, the less deserved you are. I love the setting of Qilin is fitting its Chinese mythology origin that they only shows before someone who deserves to be the ruler of all.

Thanks for addressing this issue. It would have made more scene if Jacob was the one "Pure of Heart." They'd been hinting at it earlier, so Dumbledore seems like a random choice.

They never let qilin met Dumbledore throughout the story so that the bowing won't come. Even newt and Jacob met qilin b4 except Dumbledore. So yeah he was the only one left for him to be bowed by the qilin....

I think, the pure-of-heart argument with Dumbledore would probably boil down to two points, selflessness and self-limitation. He knows that he could be corrupted by power so therefore doesn't seek it, and he is willing to do things others would consider immoral because he wants to help others. I think that his purity of heart is about accepting and living with his flaws, not simply lacking them.

After seeing all these videos and reading all these comments, I feel as if I am the only one who thought, hoped and knew it would be Dumbledore. And I was quite happy it was him. He is wise and always seeks to do what is right and true. Dumbledore finds those that will stand for the cause of always doing what is true and right and leads them on the fight for the good. He also has depth and wisdom beyond all. Not to mention, being the most powerful wizard and yet stays humble and meek enough to not abuse his powers. Dumbledore always keeps his greatness and power under control. I think people mistake pure of heart with perfection. Nobody is perfect, but God. Neither Jacob, nor Newt were perfect. They had flaws and made mistakes as well. People tend to see and hear, what they want to see and hear and often take things out of context. You have to see depth, too many only look on the surface and believe what they want and get deceived. People are too quick to judge and often can't see evil, when it is happening in their own world, right before them! There is a lot of deception out there and the battle of good and evil goes on spiritually everyday right before our very eyes. It is a spiritual warfare, and nothing matters more than the choices we choose to make. Our choices define us and our character. Always do what is right and true, no matter how difficult!

So true! People are blaming Dumbledore for not revealing to Harry that he was a Horcrux for most part of his life. Most people think he raised Harry as a pig for slaughter! What people conveniently forget is that Harry was just a child. Imagine the trauma he would have gone through if he knew all along that he was a horcrux! Dumbledore always encouraged Harry and he was the one who told Harry that it does not matters what abilities he shares with Voldemort rather what matters is the choices Harry made which made him stand apart from Voldemort. PS- Yes Dumbledore had been power hungry but he realized his folly. Realisation is a virtue which not every man has!

New theory the sorting hat is made from qilin skin. It can read people to determine their heart and it decides who's worthy of wielding the sword. It's an enchanted qilin skin hat.

Excellent question! And it highlights the stupidity of the whole ritual in the first place. "Purity of heart" is not heavily correlated with aptitude for leadership, or wisdom, or effectiveness. They need three fantastic beasts to select their leader: The qilin to detect "purity of heart" - so the leader will be honest and ethical. The rilin to detect "courage of conviction" - so the leader will actually get things done and not forget his purpose. And, The silin to detect "clarity of mind" - so the leader will be smart and know what needs to be done. But yeah, how does anyone know what a qilin bow means? Ten guys stand around a qilin and it bows to one of them, and not any of the others. Why? What's the correlation?

My guess. King's used to keep rare magical creatures as a status symbol. Eventually people noticed that the Kings the quillin bows to were good king the ones it didn't weren't. Real world supertision have started over less (think the ground hog of ground hog day)

The thing is even though Dumbledore was tempted by power, he never wanted it to hurt others. He was fooled by grindelwalds plans, and are we saying those pure of heart can never be fooled? And we've been shown time and time again love conquers all magic, so it's possible his love for grindelwald overrode any pure of heart. Flash forward to Harry's years, yes he raised Harry for the slaughter, BUT had Dumbledore not done that Harry would have never sacrificed himself. So in some ways Dumbledore took on this pressure and the possibility of looking cruel, because he knew it was the best chance at defeating Voldermort. That's a heavy toll to take and only someone with a strong heart can live all those years carrying so many burdens but always *trying* to do the right thing.

Remember that when Harry put the snitch to his lips before going to voltemort, it opened, the resurrection stone floated out and TURNED THRICE (3x) before settling into his hand. Dumbledore had cast a spell for it to do that so that Harry would be able to " come back from the dead" after the killing curse hit him. His parents, Sirius, & Lupin were always with him in his "heart" as lilly always says (and Snape mimicking her) saying 'Always'. So Dumbledore knew Harry would not die then, but also be able to willing believe he was making the ancient 'love' protection for the friends and defenders of Hogwarts protection from the killing curse, (Bellatrix really didn't miss jinny with avada cadabra, she was protected by Harry's selfless action). Plus Neville survived the same way. Dumbledore knew he couldn't tell this to snape when snape accused him of saving harry to die at the proper time, because if he had, then harry would have known the truth that he wouldn't actually die thus not being able to cast the ancient 'love' magic of protection for his love ones & defenders of Hogwarts.

I would like to point out that Dumbledore was the one who started using the phrase ‘For the greater good’ in a letter to Grindelwald. Yet another reason why having the qilin bow to him was an unusual choice.

I think all the Dumbledore slander nowadays is a misinterpretation of his motivations in the original Harry Potter story. Yes, he is very manipulative, but he literally HAD TO BE in order for the good guys to win. At least, that’s how the magic is explained at the end. If Harry had known the full truth, the specific magic at play wouldn’t have worked for him. Also, we never see Dumbledore manipulate for bad reasons, only good. If Dumbledore had acted 100% morally white, then the good guys would have lost. So he did what needed to be done. But we never see him, as an adult, act with malicious intent just for the purpose of being malicious. THAT is why he’s worthy of the Qilin bow.

I agree with you a lot! He never manipulates for his own personal gain. It’s always for the greater good, for the win of the good guys. He does expect a lot from people but he sacrifices a lot himself and untimately gives his life.

I feel like it bears mentioning that Albus wasn't actually trying to manipulate Harry and actually planned to tell him everything, and only refrained in order to prolong Harry's happiness. It was only after the events of year four (once Dumbledore knew that Harry would survive due to Voldemort having taken Harry's blood) that it became essential that Harry not know the full truth, because he could not have broken Voldemort's power with his sacrifice if he didn't mean to die, and you can't mean to die if you know you'll survive, and of course he still refrained from telling Harry that he would need to sacrifice himself because he wanted to spare Harry the pain of that knowledge. He wanted Harry to be as happy and as carefree as he could be for as long as possible. Whether that decision was best for Harry is debatable, but the intention was undeniably good, and it irks me that people vilify Albus for caring too much about Harry's wellbeing and happiness.

On the whole how did credence track the Qilin, you said it yourself that grindewald could see glimpses of the future. He easily could have forseen the qilin and identified where it was then sent credence and a couple others to fetch it but because he only sees glimpses he doesn't see the twin Qilin

When the Qilin bowed to Dumbledore, I whispered to my friend "I have 7 books at home that prove this is BS" - but now I'm not so sure. Power is his weakness, but he himself is aware of that. He keeps secrets from Harry, sometimes even withholds crucial pieces of Information, but it's for good reasons.

In HP 1, Dumbledore knows there is an unusual connection between Harry and Voldemort due to all the scar stuff. In HP 2, Dumbledore learns of the Horcruxes and hypothesizes there are more than one, which leads him to suspect Harry's connection might be because he is a horcrux. In HP 4, Dumbledore has a look of triumph when he confirms Voldemort used Harry's blood to regenerate. I would assume he has been searching for a way to allow Harry to survive this whole time, and now he has found it. In this moment, He knows Harry can live. Now, the "manipulations" of Dumbledore are done to help Harry grow into the person he becomes. The person he needs to be in order to make the "sacrifice play" in order to save everyone... including himself. I would not call that morally gray. He is giving out just enough information to everyone for the best outcome to be achieved. Harry "sacrifices" himself, but survives because it was selfless. And in doing so, puts a protection on everyone just like Lily did for him. If Dumbledore had been up front about that, it never could have worked and Harry would not have survived the removal of the horcrux. Just because he lets Snape think he raised him to die at the right time, does not make it true. Dumbledore is a boss.

That is the most brilliant comment ever. I agree with your assessment completely. One of my favorite lines was when Dumbledore tells Harry that the biggest problem with his plan was that he didn’t realize how much he would come to love Harry and want to protect him-which is why he didn’t tell Harry what he needed to know sooner. To know Harry is to love Harry, and Dumbledore clearly loved him. (That quillin would have totally bowed to Harry).

Love it! Almost cried, this explanation is so beautiful. I was always wondering about Dumbledore, his motives et cetera. Also that quote of his, i never thought about it this way. He is pure hearted and learned the hard way by loosing Ariana. He probably doesn't see that his own quote refers to him so much! This video made my day and gave me some closure on my mixed feelings of Dumbledore, at least for now :)

i love how when we speak about purity, we forget that pure evil also exists, or pure indecisiveness. purity just means the absence of impurity. it doesnt say anything about being good
