When I first understood "theme" in writing - truly understood it - it blew my fiction wide open. If you can figure out your theme, and bear it in mind while writing, it can elevate your novel or short story from good to great. I'll also touch upon how to write a theme (or themes) into your story, and how it'll keep you on track.

I usually start my projects with themes because all my stories stem from a question. Themes come out of the question and shape the whole plot. You did a great job describing theme :)

I think that's a great way of tackling it! If we know what we're trying to say, or what question we're looking to explore, we can build our whole story around it. And thank you, I had fun talking about it :)

Ben, You've finally convinced me about theme. I write middle grade and for me, up until now, theme wasn't important to me. It was adventure that was my primary goal but for the current book that I'm writing, theme is very important. I don't want to preach to my young readers but I can now see that theme will give me a framework to work with. You have really made me think.

This is great to hear! I thought the same way about theme for a long time. But it can actually be a lot of fun to wrestle with, and I think it often results in a stronger book.

I never work out my themes until it comes to my developmental editor and she points them out all the time whereas I just don't see them!

That's very often the case! I hardly ever know what my theme is until I finish the first draft. In the drafts after that, I try to bear my theme in mind, as it can really help bring everything together.

Superb video - what an interesting insight! Already subscribed. I believe 'The picture of Dorian Gray' is pretty worth reading in terms of exploring a theme as well, and any Orwell book too. Keep it up! Kind regards from Spain xx

Hey, thank you so much, I'm hoping to make more videos with this kind of format. I have The Picture of Dorian Gray on my shelf but I'm ashamed to say I've never read it! I certainly will now - thanks for the recommendation and thanks for the sub :)

This was good. I found it quite helpful. I was wondering how the theme influences how the characters act, so I'd like to know how theme ties into character motivation. I'd appreciate the help

This is a great question. In my opinion, it's a good idea to have a cast of characters who each have a different "take" on the theme. For example, maybe the theme is to do with fame. It'd be great to have a character who really wants to be famous. A character who already is famous, and loves it. A character who is famous, and hates it. Maybe a character who used to be famous, but no longer is. A character who doesn't care about becoming famous. These different facets of the theme can help to build a well-rounded story. And each character's facet of the theme will motivate how they act. For example, the person who really wants to become famous, they'll be actively trying to become famous. The person who is famous and hates it, maybe they distract themselves with drugs and alcohol. Knowing what someone WANTS will almost always influence how they ACT. I hope this helps :)
