In Japan's northern region of Aomori, the locals regularly eat bear meat. But why's it popular and how does it taste? We travel across Aomori to try 5 dishes and uncover why it has the shortest life expectancy of any prefecture in Japan. (And no it's got nothing to do with the bears!)

NOTIFICATION SQUAD: On our 200km journey around Aomori we ate our way through five local dishes. WHICH ONE do you want to try the most? Also, don't miss Ryotaro's absurd rap. He truly outdid himself this time. Jokes aside, it's good to be back on the road together. I always enjoy these little excursions and I hope you guys enjoy coming along the ride! (ESPECIALLY now Abroad in Japan is in 4k). Right, I'm off for a liquor breakfast.

If the love for salty and sweet foods, love of sake (for it is cold there), and love for instant ramen (for it is cold there) results in a 2-year shorter life expectancy than the rest of the country, I will say it is all worth it. I will say kampai to it with 4 ounces of Aomori cider in the morning.

I just noticed a bunch of similarities between Aomori and where I'm from, Austria in Europe. We have a famous apple pie (Apfelstrudel), we have a lot of different kinds of alcohol (especially wine), there is all kinds of meat (including deer - no bears though), traditional food is often quite salty. And our life expectancy is 81 years. You might like it here! ;)

This is literally the real "Black Bear Diner", I guess. Aomori is a hidden gem. There are museums (Towada Museum and Aomori Museum - That's where artist Yoshitomo Nara is from), Osamu Dazai Museum if you like Japanese literature, Shuji Terayama Museum if you are into Japanese avant-garde poetry. If you wanna talk to your dead Grandpa, you can go visit Osorezan to see a Shaman. Ultra crystal clear Towada Lake is also a great spot to visit. Needless to say, seafood there is AMAZING. BTW, Aomori isn't the only place you can get bear meat. It's called Gibier in French (local "wild game meat"), and you can still find some exotic food throughout the country. It's not that popular, but if you find one, you should definitely try dear, bear, boar, etc.

I've actually fought a deer. As long as you stay clear of the antlers and move quick you're probably going to get away with minimal injury. If unarmed, go for the neck and wrestle it down while kicking the legs out from under it. If you have a fixed blade knife or even a hatchet, stab/hack at the sides. Deer get pretty aggressive in mating season and a lot of them go through the big graveyard I used to hang out in, so I had to wrestle one to the ground before the fucker gored me for getting too close to a Doe.

My father worked as a chief and the restaurant he worked for hosted the local fish and game banquet. They had some very rare meats there. Such as cougar (usually shot because it was aggressive towards humans and wasn't willing to be relocated. That was one of the most popular meats, my dad would bring leftovers home for us and he only once brought cougar. I was too young to remember the taste, but apparently I liked it. They would also have things like porcupine, bear, deer and moose. I ate deer and moose quite a bit when I was young and I like it better then beef

@@rapthor666 Don't a lot of Nordic countries have work week caps of 30-40 hours, or is that a myth? And don't they get mandated lengthy vacation/holiday time? I wouldn't trash Italy too much for "not working hard", not exactly the everyday person's fault that unemployment is so high. Nor should working ourselves to death be something to take pride in.
@Aqnde
@Aqnde 3 жыл бұрын
@@peep3616 That's only Norway. In Finland standard work week is 40 hours(actually 38) and there is a maximum amount of overwork you can do per year. For example I worked 14 months last year. You pretty much have to do overtime to have a decent standard of living if you are of the working class(everything is expensive and the taxes are high). Average life expectancy for men seems to be 78 years atm, but I don't expect to live even close to that long considering the nature of my work.
