👍IN THIS EPISODE
Have you ever heard of Moldova? Do you know that the capital is Chisinau? Neither did we. Why visit Moldova? Because nobody goes there, that's why..., Moldova is the least visited country in Europe (that is not a micro country). Any country that is rising from the former USSR and is developing a personality of its own is worth visiting for us. We were so impressed with how this place is so unique.

I've now visited Moldova twice in the past two years. The first time, I stopped and stayed a few days in Chisinau while en route from Kiev, Ukraine to Brasov, Romania, and the only reason I had placed Moldova on my travel itinerary to begin with was because a friend back home came from Moldova. I knew virtually nothing about the country except that it had a long wine history and that it was the least visited country in Europe. But after that visit, I was smitten. Its capital Chisinau might not be as grand and vibrant as many other popular European cities -- in fact, in places the city is quite rough around the edges, with many streets and sidewalks in obvious dire need of repair -- but, the city still has its charm. Echoing what your guide said, the people really make the difference and make one fall in love with the place. And like you, I had the same positive experience with the Moldovan tourism center. In both of my visits, they were helpful beyond belief and so warm an personable. I never would have made it to Brasov without their help. I was so enchanted with Moldova from my first trip that I planned a second visit so I could be there for a week during Moldova's National Wine Day this past October. This time I roamed beyond just Chisinau, including stops in Transnistria in the east and Soroca in the north. And this second visit did not dull my enthusiasm for the place. During the festival, I was happy to encounter other tourists who were likewise both surprised and pleased by what they found in Moldova. I'm sorry you had a unfortunate experience in Tiraspol. I visited Transnistria with a wonderful local Moldovan guide who not only provided that little extra security but who was also a delight to be around. In addition to the tour of Tiraspol and Bender Fortress, we also stopped to buy fresh fruits from locals on the roadside, went to a huge 'hyper' mart to get cat food, had lunch at her favorite place in Tiraspol (which was really very, very nice), made an impromptu stop at a winery, and even picked up a couple of bags of wood pellets for kitty litter for her cats. In other words, the day was more like a day out with a good friend than a day spent with a paid guide. And now I look forward to a return visit. For a country that many have sneered at as being not worth the trouble to visit, it sure has me hooked.

Wider awareness of this amazing country is to be welcomed. Living and working in Moldova as an English person is a privilege. Moldovans are incredible people and to know this country through their eyes and experiences is a privilege. This is a young country but an ancient nation. I understand the premise behind your travel vlog and pleased to see that you found the beauty, energy and spirit of this country, but it would have benefited from more substance behind comments on history and the current political situation. Tourism is needed here but not the type of cheap mass tours of western Europeans looking for cheap alcohol and stag/hen weekend experiences such as happened in Tallinn, Prague and Krakow. The beauty of the countryside, the intellectual cultural life, the agriculture and viniculture is unique and needs care as Moldova inevitably changes and becomes more prosperous and more well known. Eco-tourism and a balanced approach is needed rather than the mass influx that has blighted other Eastern European countries. You didn’t fall into the normal hackneyed script of Moldova ‘wine, corruption and poverty’ but Moldova has problems it needs global solutions to especially losing its people. Countries like Ireland, Wales and Armenia can show a way forward in utilising diasporas and creating jobs, infrastructure and hope for young people. It is why I am here working in education. Next time you are here would love to show you other places.

Hi Rob! We have been to Tallinn and Prague and I completely agree with your assessment. In addition, I think that the way that foreigners exploit the cities and the cultures that had been built up over the centuries has left a bitter taste towards the tourists by the locals and has created an environment where the tourist are looked upon only as a pocketbook as opposed to an opportunity for a true cultural exchange. I really hope that Moldova does not get exploited although I can see how that is easily possible. It is a great country with very welcoming people. I hope it stays that way. Not exactly sure when we will be back, but we would love to see it though your eyes next time. All the best!

There is truth behind the tag, " wine, corruption, and poverty" given to Moldova, although its also true of how a beaitiful and young country is struggling to make it happen for the better, being the younger generation its biggest and most worthy asset. Same as in saying that the massive cheap tourism brings more damage than benefits to any country, and this type of trashy cheap tourism in europe is courtesy of the english tourists. So Rob, you seem to really appreciate Moldova, and its interesting and quite positive to see people like you, that through education can make a change in society. I ve spent some time in Moldova and believe in its bright future, and regarding tourism, all it needs is an older, wealthier crowd, and more investments from abroad, to make it appealing to the wealthier crowds, perhaps 3day wine tours, more bed and breakfast facilities, and health spas, just a thought.

@@rogerduke6651 skin colour is not important, mate. We, Romanians, despite our multicultural history, still look weirdly at Asians and Blacks, especially the older people will eyeball you because we have been on these lands since ancient times and we are just not used to seeing people of other skin colour than ours (well, again, I am speaking for the older generations, usually the ones living on the countryside). But, we are not racists, we just need some time to get used to, and adapt to the new. And if you're a well mannered and educated man / woman you are more welcome in here than my own Romanians who are arrogant, ill-mannered and aggressive. I will always welcome you more than Romanian ruffians, so feel free to visit more... or even settle in here if you wish. Just please, do not shit on our culture and traditions. Romanians have never conquered anyone, and we are one of the oldest races on Earth and we like to preserve the traditions because - God know - we are a heavily cultured nation. There's more and more evidence each day that most latin-speaking nations on Earth have once spread out from these lands, so we are older in traditions and culture than most people know, or like to admit. But it's true! Anyway, enough bragging! I am glad you've enjoyed our country and hopefully you will settle here. And yes, I consider Moldova our country because both Moldavians and Romanians share the language and traditions. It's the Soviet Union who had torn us apart and tried to sovietize us, if I may say so. But we are all Romanians by roots

Enjoyed seeing a different side of Moldova than what I recently viewed from another KZfaq (was more of the underbelly of Moldova and stark contrast to what you saw). Unfortunate that that the post Russian politicians basically bled the country dry of it's monetary resources and glad to hear that the young are looking to invest in their country and work towards bringing it back. Hope one day it will join the ranks of must see countries. The monastaries look fabulous.

Moldova and many Eastern European countries need a fair chance to recover from past wars and...... What's more these countries are poor. I hope oneday everybody in the world has a clean flushing toilet, basic shower, enough food to eat and a form of shelter. Just basic needs. No wonder many of them want to come and work in Switzerland. Although they are not wanted here. If working here they are shocked by Swiss prices. Also as they do not speak good English and one of our national languages so they earn peanuts. Either cleaning a house or kitchen work. This video was very interesting. Thanks. .

Hey interesting video I've been to Moldova beautiful country I went to Chisinau my favourite parts of the city were the arc d triump square and gardens, Stefan cel mare park, Valea Morilor Park, Soviet memorial, then went to Old Orhei love that place favourite part of Moldova really beautiful gorges, caves and Russian churches and then went to Transnistria which was really interesting a throwback to the USSR Tiraspol and Bendery were really cool I went on a day trip from Chisinau as I don't speak much Russian haha, such a strange place Transnistria how you have to go through border control. I really enjoyed Moldova I'm glad you shared your view of the country in a positive light I liked it as it was just so different to anywhere I've been before plus no ones heard of it. I'm actually going to Ukraine in a couple of weeks as well as Latvia, Ukraine is another country that isn't visited as much should be fascinating I'm going to Kiev and day trip to Chernobyl exclusion zone

While I would love to go to Moldova, as there seems to be so much to see and do and taste and drink. People to meet. Rich in history and culture. I see the deliciously appealing pastries stuffed with cheese or potato. Looks so buttery, flaky and delicious and you liken it to and actually compare a traditional dish of Moldova to Waffle House hash brown in bread????? You were joking right? The entire video was so unprofessional, which I actually loved by the way. Little teaser snippets of food, wine, traditional clothing, art, religion, the people the carpets. And then... you compare a local traditional food to Waffle House fare. Thankfully Moldovians, at least 99.9999% of them, have absolutely no idea how much this was an insult. "Reminds you of grandma's home cooking?" Sure. But Waffle House? You can't be serious! I am so thankful the remaining content was so beautiful I am still inspired to visit. Thank you so much. And I mean that seriously. Waffle House, really? No really? I had to go back and watch again just to make sure... and... you did. So 100% did compare it to Wawful House. I went to FL. 3 years ago, and just for white cracker-trailer-trash nostalgia reasons, I went to a Waffle House. I couldn't even eat it. It was crap. I apologized to the waitress and told her I wasn't feeling well. It is what it is and there is no sense in complaining about the quality as there is none. Left her an outrageously large tip. Please go back to Moldova and apologize to those beautiful people. ...........Wawful House.

Moldavians are our brothers from north. They speak Romanian, so they're Romanians. But the USSR (Soviet Union) - in the ugly fashion in which big empires behave - have stolen Moldova from us, along with Basarabia and Bucovina. All of these territories have spoken Romanian since the beginning of time, but with enough deculturalization and psychology you can turn brother against brother and make child murder his parent. It's harsh, but it's true. I am from Craiova, but I consider Moldavians north Romanians, nothing else! Hopefully, one day, we will be whole again... Also, I enjoyed watching your video. Hopefully you will make a return to both Moldova and Romania, cause there's plenty more to see in here than what's presented in travel guides.

Moldavians are NOT romanians. Moldova is 550 years older than Romania. I have read the history of Moldova, with simple research anyone with a brain, will notice that Romania was first a province in north turkey before 1800, as you can see here official map made by historian Mathew Carey. There was no Romania in Wallachia, Moldova, or Transylvania. Ottomans have invaded Wallachia and occupied it for more than 400 years, changing its name to "Tara Romaneasca". Romanians immigrated, stole the part of Moldavian Land and the Moldavian language, and called it "Romanian" language and rominian state only after 1881 It is MOLDAVIAN language, It is called MOLDOVIAN since 14 century for your knowledge. Rominians share the MOLDAVIAN language since 1881 because Rominia annexed only part of a Moldovan territory with Moldavian language, and Valahia with valahian language, where Rominia and rominian language were born by Rusia at 1873 -1881. Actually, the Republic of Moldova is another part of MOLDAVIA, is an independent country with MOLDAVIAN language. Go to school and study more MOLDAVIAN Constitution, art.13, and legislation, my dear mate...
