We have always wondered if the Disney Dining Plan would be right for us so I did the math and figured it out! I'm sharing all the places we're eating for our upcoming trip I why I DON'T think the Dining Plan is right for us this time. Do you like the Disney Dining Plan?? Let me know in the comments!

DVC members don’t get discounts on prepared food. We are members and were there last weekend, so unless it’s changing in the next month you won’t get it in prepared food. Not sure about annual pass-holders.

DVC members do, actually, get 10% off at many sit-down restaurants at Disney World! The complete list is on the member website. I hope you had a great trip!

We get it every single time and we buy the deluxe dining plan. We are a family of 6 and one thing it is nice to know that everything is paid for upfront so we do not have to worry about saving money with an unknown amount to save towards. Second we get the deluxe because we like to sit and rest and we are the family that it at the gate an hour early and leave with the staff so the only rest we get is sitting down to eat. It is also need for our little ones ages 2 and 8. Also we like character dining and use those credit up quickly at Cinderellas Castle and Be Our Guest which is 2 each.

I have finally joined the "i love the dining plan" crew. It happened that we had a day and half staying off property this last trip. We have had the Dining Plan going while we stayed on property, and then ended the trip with our off property stay. We still went to the parks on those days, but we just didn't stay at our Disney hotel. For that time off of the Disney Dining Plan, we were met with such sticker shock that it was almost all we could talk about all day long. For lunch that day, we went to the plaza restaurant which we had never been to before. Between my daughter and I and one more Children's meal that her two-year-old twins shared are lunch bill was about $78. For lunch. The meal was fine but it wasn't anything special... And we just found ourselves with sticker shock and regret for the rest of the day. It's not what I want to be thinking about. A problem I have with the current Dining Plan... is that I do not drink alcohol. I am not happy that we don't have a choice of an appetizer or a dessert but instead my allocated value is given to a mixed drink that I know that I absolutely won't be having. I really wish that the alcoholic addition was an option rather than the given. I would much rather my dining plan include the choice of an appetizer or dessert versus a mixed drink.

You bring up a really interesting point - it IS very nice to have it all paid for and being able to not even think about what you're ordering. I TOTALLY get this!! When we all 5 go my twins have a tendency to order the most expensive thing on the menu so our next family trip I'll do the math again and it might work!! Thanks so much for watching and commenting! I love the differing perspectives.

I read somewhere that you can get a milkshake or something similar instead of the alcoholic drinks. That may only be for children but you should check that out as an option.

You are AWESOME! 1000 subscribers already!! You go girl! I love this topic! We've had "free dining" before and felt that it was TOO much food on the regular dining plan. We didn't get the dining plan this past trip and mostly shared meals and snacks. It isn't worth it for us to get the dining plan. It can be for people that like character meals though! Great tips!!

We love the dining plan. We love the “all inclusive” feel of it. We always get deluxe and we eat as expensively as possible so we do come out ahead. We’re two adults who are foodies. That’s the best part of our trips, the food. We don’t like breakfast, so we eat an early lunch and then we do signature dining for a late dinner. We do get alcohol with our meals since they’ve added alcohol.

We use the dining plan on the majority of our trips if we plan on having a lot of table service meals. If we are doing mostly counter service or a short stay, we usually don’t bother with it. It just has been kind of easy to send the kiddos on their own way without worrying if they have enough money for food and snacks. ~ Cathy

I am not a vegetarian... so I go for the most expensive meal on every menu with the regular plan. Boom! Simple. I like that I don’t even have to think about anything else after that. My only gripe is that you get too many snacks and they add up at the end of the trip, unless you force feed Mickey ice cream bars on your kiddos all day.

First, congrats on 1K. Well deserved. Second, like you I prefer to work out my plans for the trip then decide if one of the dining plans make sense for that trip. I do like the dining plans because I like prepaying for as much as possible, though it doesn't always make sense. The one that would be really hard for me to justify is the deluxe dining plan. That one only works I think if you are planning a lot of signature restaurant meals. Maybe for something special like an anniversary trip.

Great analysis! I have only used the Disney Dining Plan once (when I was a CM, we had a good offer). I totally agree that answering "Is the Disney Dining Plan a good value?" is not cut and dry! Totally depends on situation. That being said, if you have young kids (under 3) and they love characters, BOOK THE DINING PLAN FOR SURE because you get a lot of food, the character experience, and "paying" for only the adults.

Jen Lefforge Honestly the transportation thing is my biggest conundrum! I'm Canadian and live in BC so there's no way I'lll drive to WDW. But I'm not sure renting a car is a good idea. I'm big on the the freedom of driving on your own schedule but the cost of parking is so high, especially now that they are charging for parking at hotels. Any insights?
@JenLefforge
@JenLefforge 6 жыл бұрын
YES! Take advantage of Magical Express from the airport (free) and then use Lyft or Uber when the busses aren't cooperating. They are IN ABUNDANCE and very reasonable (less than a rental car). The only time I take the Disney buses is to Magic Kingdom because it drops you off right in front which is easier. Or you can Uber to the Contemporary resort and walk from there. It's what we've done our last few trips and it worked out great! They both have an app for your phone and it's super easy to use.

Jen, such a great video! We just got back last week and you helped us decide against the dining plan. And I think it was the right choice. I went thru the same exercise of looking at what restaurants we would be eating at and what we would most likely order. I've saved all of my itemized receipts so I can see how close I was. But really it was your point about the lack of flexibility with the menu or needing to cancel that sealed the deal. I dont like to eat a lot in the summer and I have a 6 yr old who is a super picky eater. But something else I wanted to mention, our departing flight got canceled and we lost our entire first day!! 😭 We had a dinner reservation that night. Disney didn't charge me (thankfully) but had we paid for the dining plan we would have been out another $200. Your videos and content are fantastic! You really do a great job, Jen! Thank you!!

Great video! My family and I had a dinning plan once in Disneyland Paris which was included as a promotion with our stay. The package included the resort breakfast, one meal at a quick service or sit down restaurant and two snacks a day. Breakfast and some snacks certainly saved us some money. But for us it would not make a lot of sense to buy this as we generally do not enjoy eating too much in the parks and we always stay in a cabin where we can make our own fresh meals (at least one cooked meal a day). We had a lot of snacks remaining at the end of our stay. However, it did encourage us to make some restaurant reservations (which we don't normally do) and I have some good memories from those meals. So I think personally a discount on our trip would have been a better value than the dinning plan, BUT it did give us experiences we otherwise would have skipped!

Your videos are an absolute pleasure to watch! I don't run AT ALL and I still love your videos. I actually went back and watched every one over the weekend....maybe I shouldn't admit to that, LOL. We haven't used the dining plan in YEARS for a few reasons. One, I don't always want dessert and most times would rather do an appetizer and entree instead, if that much food at all. Two, my wife is vegan, so definitely not ordering the most expensive items on the menu. Thanks!

We find the Disney dining plan works great for us! We love the character meals and traditional offerings! One tip that I haven’t used, although I’ve heard of....if you have a scheduled dining reservation but find that at the last minute you’re unable to keep it, instead of paying a cancellation fee you can modify the reservation to another day or even another restaurant (a bit further out), and then cancel that reservation. That would save you the cancellation fee. I’ve just recently found your channel and am enjoying your videos!

Great video & suggestions! Have a great trip! In case this is helpful for others, I wanted to mention that someone could also use the 5% off Disney cards from Target to pay for the dining plan. And another thing to consider is that tax is included in the dining plan price but it is not included in the menu price, so be sure to add that when comparing total prices of both.
@JenLefforge

You're so right! The other thing I didn't mention is that the Dining Plan can be rolled into your package and many people who have Disney Visa cards take advantage of the 6 months zero interest - which obviously wouldn't work if you were paying out of pocket. Thanks for mentioning it!

Great information. We like to get the dining plan so we can budget our trip. It is easier for the two of us than tryiing to figure out the cost of each meal and comparing to the plan. Several years ago we got a dining plan that you paid a certain amount and you had to keep up with what you spent so you didn't run out of money. The new dining plan is a lot better.

Me, too! To be honest, there's a strong possibility i may spend more but I'll get different food - sushi and appetizers and snacks that don't count as a credit like the big pretzels in Germany - so I get what I WANT not what the dining plan tells me I need. So much better! Glad you found me!

LOL- they stuck our folio under the door at AKL last March :) Good stuff, that's how we usually crunch our numbers, we anticipate for our November trip, 4 nights total, 3 park days, one night Disney Springs, about $600 OOP, the DDP is $1200 LOL. We don't drink alcohol, our kids eat like birds and we sometimes share meals. Doesn't make sense at all for us. We also don't like being so boxed in and constrained.

Here's the thing. We travel from the UK, and we get the 'free dining' options (I know it's not completely free, but the cost uplift is really not that great for us). For us, the food is as much a part of the holiday as the parks are. We were blown away by the quality of some of the food we had, and it was *great* to go in not worrying about the cost of the food. We picked what we wanted to eat, without worrying about the cost. Because we weren't worried about cost, we tipped much better that we would have done (I usually tip 20%, but some times we were tipping closer to 40% when they absolutely nailed service). We ate some great food that we'd not have tried without knowing it was so damn cheap that it really didn't matter if we needed to grab a snack later because we didn't like it. We had the regular dining plan and found it to be a good balance - no WAY could we manage deluxe dining plan, mind. That's a crazy amount of food. We're going back in a year or so. If free dining is a thing, we'll be doing it. If not, then I'll pay OOP, and it'll be an interesting comparison. Just our experience, YMMV, etc..

This a great video! My best friend and I are doing WDW for the first time in April 2019, and we decided to save on the hotel and splurge on the dining plan. We went for value resort, and deluxe DP, but we are also planning a ton of 2 credit meals to really make the most of our experience, we shouldn't need to pay any extra for food outside the plan and pre-paying (when we booked so far in advance anyway) just makes it feel less expensive. I think if I was in your situation I'd have done the exact same as you though!

Enjoyed both videos about DDP very much. Totally agree. I’m myself a big breakfast person: I like having a good breakfast and would probably skip or have a light lunch during park days, and that’s poor use of dining plan’s points, usually. I’m also an international traveler, so we usually stay over seven days and like to visit places outside DisneyWorld in our trips. Also, both me and my husband aren’t big on snacks (if we get something, we share), and my kids are usually okay with sharing too (okay, maybe I’m the one who forces them to share, but, you know, easy on the sugar there, children!). I love a good table service restaurant as much as the next exhausted mom, but we definitely don’t eat enough food, as a family, to justify the dining plan. Anyway, great videos. Very informative. Will certainly follow the channel.

Hey Jen! Another great video! I really like the Disney gift card idea. The regular Disney Dining Plan has always worked for us, we usually break even or come out ahead. But this year will be our first trip where our son is an "adult" (he turns 10 two weeks before we go). While he does eat some adult-y things, I'm reasonably sure he won't eat his $75 worth every day. This is a great option, thanks!

We are also DVC, and we mostly don't do the dining plan because our 16 year old daughter is a tiny girl with a tiny appetite and children's tastes in food, so on the dining plan, we'd have to pay for her to eat adult meals, but she really mostly orders kids meals. We only have to pay for her as an adult at family style or buffet meals such as Ohana or Hoop Dee Doo. In that case, we just have to pay it even though she'll eat very little.

For clarity we're staying at Pop just to see the refurbished rooms, and staying 5 nights. The difference between a room only discount and the "free" dining was 400 more for the free dining - however, that means we got the dining plan for 4 people for 400 for 5 days. We also upgraded that to standard dining. So really for us *this* trip it really made sense to grab it because our kiddos are really into character meals and so at $50 per adult for most of those its a no brainer.

We have always used the DDP, the deluxe plan in December, but we also have no other discounts like AP or DVC and we saved $300 during our last trip. Our next trip however, I'm going to buy an AP and TIW card b/c I think that will trump the savings of the DDP and it will allow the flexibility that you talked about that is always my biggest fear with the DDP. Also, don't know if anyone else mentioned this, but a pro tip regarding cancelling ADRs: Instead of cancelling it outright, just modify it to another day or two in the future and if you're not going to use it, you can then cancel it when it's a full day out without being charged the cancellation fee.

I 100% agree with you on the flexibility. I too like to sometimes order an appetizer and side - I have food allergy issues - and the DDP just doesn't allow it. I'm also not a person for sodas or speciality drinks, I mostly drink water, so the refillable mug and drinks included are not an added value. I've priced it out several times and for me it just never works out to be a benefit cost wise. Not to mention that it would seem to force me to eat far more food to get my money's worth than I really want.

The Disney Dining Plan is a must for my family. We have three teenagers that LOVE to eat and drink soda. My husband was previously “vocal” (understatement) scrutinizing their meal choice price and made them drink water. He was like a different person the first time we used the dining plan~ everyone ordered what they wanted and he was so much more pleasant. It also helps him to relax with a beer at the meal and to know that it is paid for 100% (other than TS tip) before we go helps tremendously with budgeting.

the deluxe one is the only one I found value in, and that's only because I ate at all table service no quick service. Ironically though it only was of value because my cast discount and my AP discount didn't apply to most of the restaurants I was eating at. Once you apply those discounts you end up paying more for the dining plan.

Our last day was at Animal Kingdom and it was a million degrees...on our way out I was pulling people aside and buying them food and drinks - people were looking at me like I was crazy and looking around for a hidden camera or something. It was pretty funny :) I think on the next trip we will skip the dining plan :) I think I would like the flexibility as well. Most of the time we were too hot to eat much.

It worked for us when we were a family of 4 when they first offered the free dining in 2005. We did quite a few character meals that I wouldn't had been wanting to pay for out of pocket, and we tallied up $650 in free food. Now when we go in Sept. of 2019, it will be me and my 2 kids, my son will be 21 and my daughter 17 and if free dining isn't offered, then we are paying out of pocket for our meals. I've gotten 2 different quotes when I have called in to inquiring about just the regular dining plans you mentioned, and one was almost $1,000 more and the other quote was almost $1700 more....not sure about their math, but we are definently NOT eating that much food. 6 nights and 7 days for our trip this time.

Dina, I'm going to do a video on it soon, but when we got home from this last trip I added up our receipts and the dining plan for sure would have cost us money and we wouldn't have been able to eat some of the places we loved, like the wine bar in Italy (Tutto Gusto). Also, there were many days when we didn't eat lunch at all and just had a snack and a large dinner. Another tip I've learned is that the kid's meals at a lot of the counter service places are plenty of food for me and anyone can order them:).
@dinabailey8111
@dinabailey8111 6 жыл бұрын
Jen Lefforge I believe it all depends on your family on how much members would eat on if it's worth it. We do enjoy the characters meals and even with the those meals added up, we still don't come close to what it would be if we paid for the dining plan everyday. Most of the meals we've chosen so far are breakfast, so those will cover us well into the day, plus we're bringing snacks, and then a counter service. My daughter and I aren't big eaters, where my son is a bit more of one but this will work for us. If we are able to land the free dining, then that would be great cause that's less we have to spend, so we'll see come winter/spring time if I can land on it. Look forward to your video and counting down our days! 😊

I am currently looking at the dining plan for my first time, last time having used a gift card(the three meals and a snack I had came to a little over $150 I think, three table service and a snack from a flower & garden kiosk), and the main thing that has me on the fence is the meals include desserts, something I am not fond of. However, I do enjoy sit down meals(and usually pricier items) as well as alcohol with meals. I do think, like many here, Disney should allow the option of an appetizer or dessert, though the deluxe for 2019 is appetizer, entree, and dessert, but that is too much food unless I am specifically doing a foodie trip. I would definitely use the mug, refilling it at least once a night(due to a preference of keeping something to drink close at hand). I do think you made many good points in this video.

I go to Disney a couple times a year with different friends. One of my friends is great at paying things off and not so good at pre-saving money. When I go with him we always get the dining plan and I eat based on Disney's meal rules. I also go with family and one other friend whereas money is abundant and we don't like to follow meal purchasing rules. When I go with either of those groups the meal plan doesn't fit our personal style. Appetizers and a couple drinks at Jiko is my absolute favorite, there is no meal plan for this. In the end it's such a group to group personal choice. When I go with my first friend we always order the largest counter service breakfast and split it, and do the same for lunch. Happy vacationing to you and your son. Your videos are delightful to watch and informative xoxo

No, this is a think, Kris and it's why a lot of people love it. They don't have guilt! I always tell my kids they can get (or not get) whatever they want on vacation but your perspective is really common. I think it's also why people like cruises - hey, I paid for it already I'll get what I want! Can absolutely make it more fun. Thanks for watching and for sharing that!

+Brian Rota no, tips are not included with the dining plan so you pay those either way. Thanks for watching!

Interesting and informative video. I've been wondering about the dining plan as I've been doing research towards a future trip (not booking anything for a long time yet, but planning is part of the fun). I'd be a solo visitor and I don't think it would be for me. A big part of it is feeling restricted to certain types of food/restaurants. For instance, i'm not a fancy restaurant type of person, but I would want to have one maybe two table service meals. For the novelty & setting more than anything. Otherwise a more on the go counter service method of eating is much more for me. Also I don't want to go ahead with the counter service plan, and on top of that pay for two table service meals out of pocket. Doesn't seem logical to me. I'd rather, in the end, just have the freedom of choosing what I eat whenever I choose. :)

Exactly! I like having flexibility even if it costs me a little more (but in this case, I don't think it does).

True. Also I figured that seeing as I'd like at least 2 table service meals then I would have to go for the plan that enables you to have them. But at every day and with having to order high priced meals to justify the cost.. Well it's better off just not bothering. For me that is, because 90% of my food would be snacks/counter service anyway. The thing I like about it is the feeling of having meals covered already. But not when it'd work out more than I would actually likely pay :)

I agree that the dining plan doesn’t work for everyone. On my 7 night 8 day trip in mid-October it worked very well for me. I don’t have the discounts available like you have. For me the deluxe dining plan was perfect. Because I like dining at the signature restaurants for lunch or dinner. Plus the convince was worth it as well. I even used it for getting 2 appetizers one night. No priblem

All correct points. Especially the discount and flexibility. I understand how people want to pre pay. But you can still with gift cards Dining plan isn't designed to save you money nits designed to make Disney money.

We LOVE the dining plan...when it's free! First time we went (family of 4 w/2ad & 2 teens), we looked at the prices on the menu and thought, 'we'll NEVER be able to come again if we have to actually pay for food'! But daughter (16) and I went with/no DDP and I added it up when we got home from a 6 nt trip, we spent about $37 per person per day. We like one TS and one QS/day. We could usually split meals, or do one entree and one or two apps/sides and it was enough. I can't justify the expense of the DDP. We also had purchased the Tables in Wonderland card so got that discount as well. I'm not sure if our savings will make the expense of that worth it (have a 9 nt/3 person trip coming up).

I thought about TiW for the trip we just got back from BUT we got 10% at most places for "free" because of our annual pass so the math didn't work. And yes, free dining can work GREAT especially with kids that qualify as Disney adults!!

We used a dining plan calculator and it came out pretty much even. BUT when I did our calculations for out of pocket I didn't include specialty drinks or alcohol or as many snacks. I think we'll actually get them if they are already paid for but not if we're paying out of pocket. I think the value is best because we have 2 kids under 10 (4 and 9). If we had 4 adults I'm not sure the value would be as good. I got discounted gift cards at Sams Club, online using ebates so I got that extra discount. I'm paying off my entire Disney trip, over time that way. It's worked great so far. I should end up saving $300!

You bring up a GREAT POINT that I really should have touched on - if you have kids that Disney actually classifies as kids, you really should consider the Dining plan! Sounds like you guys made the perfect choice for your family!

When I was on the (free) dining plan, didn't like how many desserts were included.... desserts at every meal. So many times I wanted to order an appetizer instead of dessert, and the answer was "no". Plus most of the snacks at Disney are on the sweet side. I like dessert but everything in moderation!

I really do try to watch how much sugar I eat and you're 100% correct. I don't want that much dessert!! I've heard sometimes they'll give you an appetizer instead but it seems to be hit and miss (and rather arbitrary!). Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!

We've done the math and the dining plan isn't cheaper for us. However, we are doing the dining plan on our next trip. We received free dining (and I know it's not really "free"), but the value was higher than the room discount, so it is the best discount for this trip.

That's why it's so important to run the math each trip, right Cheri? Sometimes it absolutely works out! Thanks so much for watching. When is y our next trip and how exciting! We are 29 days away. Not that I'm counting it down or anything (lol). Thanks for watching!

I think you replied to someone else already, but you didn’t factor in tax to your calculations. Once I did that, I realized that we did actually save money with the DDP. Not a ton, but a save is a save! :) I will say it was awesome not thinking about pricing (in fact we actually chose the most expensive options everywhere we went!), but it was just too much food. We had to trade in 2 CS meals for snacks at the end, which was disappointing. And by the last day, when we had breakfast buffet at Boma, we woke up still stuffed and bloated and didn’t enjoy ourselves as much as we would have if we weren’t eating so much the whole trip. I think DDP is a great option, but I can’t say I will do it again (though maybe the most basic option would fit us better!). Great video as usual! :)

Yeah, the too much food piece is real. And we don't eat out a lot at home so that many restaurant meals makes me feel bloated and gross, too. Way more salt then we're used to!! Thanks for the kind words and for commenting!! Oh, and YES excellent point about the tax!
