Amazing that Common Core math complaints are about the Singapore math approach!
@BBC600
@BBC600 2 жыл бұрын
@@FlashToso My hypothesis based on my understanding, (and I could be wrong based on the fact I am not an American and only have a limited knowledge base) is that some of the Common Core complaints is the way it is packaged. Probably the straight up Singapore math is fine (that's an understatement) but when whoever picked it up and tried to transfer it outside of that setting it might not have worked so well. Also, I know (although, we didn't call it Common Core) when we switched from very old MathQuest books in elementary school to Nelson Math Focus (Canadian here) there were problems because the transition was just sudden for everyone. I think the teachers weren't well trained in it and the books were written from a perspective where it sort of assumed you had been using their curriculum since Grade 1. I think I was probably in about Grade 4 when the books switched. Mind you I've had nothing but issues with my math education. I liked this person's description of what their daughter was doing as I felt my head nodding in agreement. I feel I can sometimes recognize a problem and do the steps that were programmed for "in the event of x do y." But I don't know why I'm doing 'y'. When instead, there should be a deeper understanding rather than just an on the surface robotic-like overview. If that makes any sense.

@@BBC600 Common Core is standards or a list of skills to teach that allows locals to fill in the details to create classwork.. Singapore math is a curricula that made minor changes to create a Common Core version. Most complaints are about textbooks, not standards.
@BBC600
@BBC600 2 жыл бұрын
@@FlashToso That's what I said it's the way the math is packaged together (the way the textbooks show it and the teachers are told to demonstrate it) that gains the objections and causes confusion. We here in Canada have something called the WNCP that we follow for our math standards.

I started my 4.5 year old with the early bird kindergarten program for prek this year. Oh. My. God... Most of it has been ok but place value this past week/ last week has been a bugger. For a couple of days the whole homeschool day was math. I dare say, knock on wood, he's got 10's and 1's...
@HomeschoolwithJen
@HomeschoolwithJen 3 жыл бұрын
Place value can be tricky! So glad that you started early. I hope he has 10's and 1's for your peace of mind! Plus, once 10's and 1's are understood, other place value builds on it. We're working on decimal place value and I'm so thankful that we took the extra time to learn the whole numbers place values because it is making this so much more smooth. Way to go, Momma!!!!

I'm not too familiar with the primary school education (graduated more than 7 years ago) but during my secondary school, the trend was that math was shifting towards real life situations. I think it shifts away from the memorisation and trains (and in a way forces) students to understand how things work. But with this trend, primary school would probably have the same trend.
@HomeschoolwithJen
@HomeschoolwithJen 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I believe that the trend is shifting to how you mentioned. It is the understanding of how things work that I really appreciate now.

Thanks for your video! I want my son to understand the concepts instead of just memorizing it. And he has dyslexia and he can’t remember which methods to use what problems. I realized that he really really needs to understand the concepts. Memorizing the methods didn’t help him at all.. So I was thinking to start Singapore math.. My son is 6th grade, What do you think about starting 4th grade Singapore math with 6th grader and build the concepts and catch up slowly…? He actually solves math problems with his own understanding instead of the methods that I taught. -English is not my first language so please understand my poor English:) -

I'm interested to know your opinion about the US Common Core Math.
@HomeschoolwithJen
@HomeschoolwithJen 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching and asking the question. I am a proponent of the children understanding the materials. There are some children who can understand it through memorization. There are other children who understand it better by the way Common Core was designed to be taught. Then, there are children who are a mixture of the two. As a homeschooling momma, I believe that it's my responsibility to determine what works best for my child learning math and then approach it that way. There have been times when memorization has worked wonderfully. Then, there have been times that we have had to use the manipulatives, games, and other methods in order for the understanding to be there. In my opinion, that is the beauty of homeschool, to do what needs to be done in order for the material to be understood.

@HomeschoolwithJen

I'm so glad you asked this question as I have been contemplating such a video. So much input! My biggest question would be whether your 4th grader understands the concepts or has memorized the steps. I will work on the video to get out his month. Unfortunately, my opinion is so much more involved than a simple yes/no. Again, thank you!

I know you didn’t ask me but we switched to homeschool as well my student DID go down two years but I’m in a lot of Singapore /homeschool groups and that is REALLY normal. We started our school year 6 weeks ago and she now LOVES math. She’s also speeding through some sections that she already learned and then filling in gaps and moving slowly through other areas. It is totally worth it to do the placement test

@@jugemujugemugokonosurikire4735 Legit, I'd go all the way back to the kindergarten program. I'm doing the earlybird primary standards with my son and I just don't see how anybody could not be pulling every hair out of their heads without starting at the beginning. Parts of just the kindergarten level are frustrating enough. And that's kindergarten. Never in my life would it have occurred to me that kindergarten level math would be frustrating but it's place value and number bonds and we didn't do that in kindergarten. I don't drink but working my 4.5 year old son through groups of 10's and 1's place value has been trying and I wanted to. Precisely because he can't just memorize it. He actually has to understand it enough to think about it and problem solve. He's got it now but good Lord... I would imagine some very important principles would get skipped if you don't start at the beginning and one of the complaints I've heard is there's not much review with this. You're just expected to know if you've proceeded. I have a love/ hate relationship with this curriculum. My son will hopefully excel in math as every black hair on my head turns grey. I think it's actually a great program for kids that aren't naturally great at math because it teaches them how to think it through. They don't have to naturally be great at it to do very well if they put the effort in. To me, it's worth it...

It's a thing. You have no idea how bad at math Americans generally are. And honestly, I can see why. You're actually taught how to problem solve. We're taught to memorize steps and that's fine to a point but it only works to a point. By then, our brains are resistant to learning problem solving and only people that are just naturally wired that way or really work at it can do it.
