They had a chance to go hybrid with treasure planet, but it's become relatively clear by the historical record that they were out to completely can their legacy 2D animation department and so needed Treasure Planet to "underperform" so they had an excuse. Which marked them completely transitioning to 3D and abandoning 2D altogether. Meanwhile other studios and Japan especially worked through the teething stages of 3D with some figuring out how to combine it with 2D work to produce some amazing stuff.

To me, it seems that what's wrong with this is that Disney wants to cash in on the spideyverse style of animation without actually commiting to it to not alienate any viewers, keeping it in a lukewarm middle... They're not ready to fully lean into a stylistic choice, like the paperman short is, for example. They want to play it safe, yet want to participate of the animation renaissance
@skittlecornnation4323

To be fair... if they converted all the way people would say they're copying spiderverse, and if they kept their own style they'd be called unoriginal. I think they're trying to do something in the middle to get less flack from both sides.

@thevioletbee5879 paperman doesn't really hold up. And keep in mind Disney only wants to make blockbusters, and their signature style is what gets money. Experimental animation is too much of a risk. They want to test the waters with a new style but have to keep is grounded in case people don't like it. I think this is a good start, then they can see how the next one will look.

I'm an intern at ShiningIsle, a small, crowd-funded animation studio producing the Wingfeather Saga. The show is not perfect, working with such a small budget, but it is truly visionary with its style. It uses a gorgeous, hand-painted look with 2D elements. A lot of former Pixar and Disney animators work there. I was in a design meeting today and this trailer came up. They were... eh? about it. In their words, although it was cool that Disney was trying to break away from hyper-realism, it looks "unrendered." One of them went so far as to say it looks like the animated-character Tiktok filter. (This is, of course, just what seemed to be their first impression of the film, nothing deeper than that.) The faces, in my opinion, look just way too smooth and same-y. I think this is a cool new direction for Disney, and I hope they try out more of this experimentation, but I just wish they would lean into it more. I can see it, but if I squint, it still looks like any Revival-era 3D film.

Hi. Professional 3D animator here. I’ve seen this trailer at work along with some peers who worked at MacGuff on stuff like the Minions, Sing and Mario, and even our animation lead who worked on Arcane at Fortiche and more recently on the TMNT movie. You’ve mentioned this movie’s style, and it’s important to make the distinction between the “art style” (character design, backgrounds, render, compositing...) and “animation” (movement, timing, spacing, body-mechanics...). For me the general art style relatively fine, having traditional chara designs with a graphical, cel-shaded render. (In fact the yellow Luma thingy is kinda cute ngl). But some of my peers while praising the BGs they still felt the character renders were a bit flat (especially the shadows). Our biggest gripe however comes from the animation department, with some shots having some spacing and arcing issues, and even some run cycles looking a bit broken (with maybe some parasitic leftover keys). I’ve seen a comment here from an animation intern who said his coworkers found it “unrendered”, and I think part of this reasoning is that there’s no motion blur. And despite it being a deliberate artistic decision in order to have a more stylized look (even though Arcane has motion blur), it amplifies this lack of animation polish (especially considering the animation by itself is pretty traditionally splined, unlike Spiderverse and TMNT where it’s technically a HEAVILY refined and drawn pass 2 of blocking). Heck if they kept motion blur this would hide a lot of those issues. Bottom line is, if they released it as a low budget Disney+\TV original this would have been fine, but as a big project with a theatrical release, the animation lacks polish in this trailer. And the fact that some people felt something was off proved the importance of this polish.

Hi, Storyboard artist here. My feeling with Disney is that they are trying very very hard to not be anime. Not speaking for them, just having my concern. Turning Red was not very sponsored by Disney per sé, in the comics side they ABSOLUTELY want to avoid manga with all their power (if you read something about W.I.T.C.H. genesis, you know). I think this new trend which is CLEARLY taking from anime is putting Disney between a rock and an hard place. They want to jump on the ride but they have this internal policy of avoiding anime at all cost. Sony, Dreamworks, Illumination, Riot, Paramount just really don't care about it and are going for it. If Disney is not going to adapt to the trend, I dunno. I feel it will stay in the shadows.

I have a problem with Disney's animated faces, and I don't know if it's a consistent style they've adopted or if it has something to do with 3D-animation itself. But it seems to me as if all the female leads have exactly the same face nowadays. For each film, they take the same face and maybe add tiny differences, making it just a bit wider or just a bit longer, making the eyes just a bit bigger or smaller, but nonetheless it's always the same face. Each time I think "Oh, it's Elsa again, except with dark hair. Oh, it's Rapunzel but with curls. Oh, it's Mirabel but with dreads. Oh, it's Moana but blond." That, and (here's where lots of people will probably disagree) they all seem to come with the same basic personality. They're all optimistic, bubbly and driven. The only exception to this rule is Elsa, actually, who was a troubled, timid recluse consumed by guilt and self-doubt, and it was really refreshing. I don't know, perhaps Wish will do it differently, but I'm longing for a female lead with a different character and story arc. Give us a girl who is arrogant and learns humbleness. Give us a girl who has done something terribly wrong (and not the "oops" kind, something actually significant) and is striving for redemption. Give us a girl who is shy or cowardly and learns bravery. A girl who is a control-freak and then turns into a chaotic trickster. Or just give us a static female lead who wrecks the conventions of society from beginning to end and inspires change in others. I don't know, something new and interesting.

So I'm worried that the end is gonna be portrayed as a happy ending with everyone getting their wishes with the obvious problem of people wishing for bad things.

When i first aaw the trailer, I was excited for the style change but now, seeing the clips over and over, certain scenes look kinda like they're from a video game (in a bad way). Still, cautiously optimistic about an original story with a villain, and glad Disney is trying different things animation-wise. Backgrounds are beautiful though, it's just the characters look a little uncanny in some shots. Paper man still holds up as a beautiful short though.

I definitely miss 2D animation & in a time of revivals, I wish more studios would bring back 2D! I can't help it, I grew up during an era of phenomenal 2D films like The Prince of Egypt, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Treasure Planet, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, Thumbelina, Anastasia, Ferngully: The Last Rainforest - seriously I could keep going! Like you said, I'm cautiously optimistic about this upcoming film, but I rather welcome this than another live action adaption of a perfect Disney animated classic. A lot of people slept on Disney's Meet the Robinsons, but in the spirit of that film - *KEEP MOVING FORWARD!*

A lot of people are talking about the animation but one thing I'm getting burnt out on is the typical 'Disney Princess Style'. This is no dis on Glen at all given a lot of what we love about the modern (and by modern I mean Little Mermaid and on. =P) look of the Princesses but maaaaan. When you realize other studios CAN vary their designs from series/feature you start to miss the days when Disney did that and they do....but just with non-Disney Princesses it seems. When you remember how movies like Lilo and Stitch, Atlantis and even grandfathered in 'Disney Princesses' like Mulan, Pocahontas, and Brave looked you just go where is THAT type of flavor? For a company that keeps screwing up the older Princesses and saying how they need to change, they don't seem to want to experiment with the general character designs so we can see that sort of change. And tldr, story is important too. VERY important. Disney ain't cutting it anymore.

Everything looks great except for the humans. Unlike Spiderverse and other 2.5D animated hybrids that add small line details to the faces, Disney just seems to outline the basic shapes of the characters which makes the characters look even more plastic and blander than before. They should’ve gone full in on the watercolor aesthetic and used that in the shading and added more line detail to the characters faces because honestly a lot of the time it just looks like a video game.

The Peanuts movie deserves so much more credit then it gets. Designed like the comic strip and cartoon, it successful took the things that people don't like about Charlie Brown (that fact that everyone is mean to him and he feels like he fails at everything he does) and shows that those things is what makes him charming and gives him moral fiber (in that when he fails it is because he is ambitious and is willing to sacrifice his success to help those he loves). It’s nice that they are “trying new things”, and I keep that between quotation marks, because that’s such an unpolished, timid, and clumsy way of “making a new style”… it’s just some “line art”, with some watercolour looking texturing, and lower polygon elements in the environment, on top of their existing character style. I don’t really have much hopes for it, but I’m ready to be surprised. It could be so much cooler with an actual watercolour and ink style, like Glen Keane made for Tangled’s artworks. They're only trying that new style because other studios did an amazing job using it. They're not trying to be sentimental. They saw movies with such style (Bad Guys, Spiderverse, Puss in Boots and even a show like Arcane as a bit more of an adult series) succeed and they thought "lets copy what they're doing" without thinking for a second longer that maybe it's not about visuals. They fail to realize that people could give less than two shits about the style of animation if the story is good if there is an actual passion behind those stories. I do not doubt that people who actually work on them have so much passion for delivering a good and beautiful story but the executives of disney are limiting them. It's the same what happened to last 2D animated movies. They were amazing and they would've done so much better at box office if the people who are responsible of running this goddamn studio cared to give those movies the advertisement and care they needed. Instead they shoved them aside and went "yep 2D animation isn't cutting it anymore". Just like they did with strange world recently. I had no idea it was a movie till it literally released. You know what they probably said "yeah maybe people don't want gay characters". I have so much hetrage towards this goddamn company. There is so much love and care that people who actually work on these movies have for these films but the "product" part is just ruining everything.

You now what else I'm tired of? All the main characters in modern Disney films all look basically the same. Same usually heart shaped face with small chin, big round eyes, little gently sloping button nose, (usually) full lips, usually long flowy hair... and it's getting visually boring. Think Rapunzel, Anna, Elsa, Moana, Mirabel (except she actually had short curly hair, which I loved, it was refreshing), Isabela and now this character (although she has braids, but it has the same effect). Characters like Megara with her sharp features and unique hairstyle, Ariel with her big poofy hair, Luisa with her bigger athletic body shape, Dolores with her curly bun, Pocahontas with her unique face, Tiana with her curly hair, Snow White with her smaller eyes and short fluffy hair, Mulan with her Asian eyes and round face, Merida with her wild red curls, all of those are characters that look different and distinct from each other to me. Their character designs are unique and fresh. Most modern characters may have different skin colors, hair and eye colors, and slightly different heights, but their facial features look more or less the same. If you change the colors of their complexion, they look very similar. I feel like I'm seeing the same character over and over again, but with slightly different hair eye and skin colors and slightly different hairstyles. They're a little better at making the male characters more unique and distinct, but too many of the modern female characters have the same kind of character design. I want something fresh and different. Gimme chubby cheeks and a double chin, a sharp, prominent nose, a tooth gap, bushy eyebrows, square faces, long, slim faces, freckles (kudos to this character's freckles), wide-set eyes, close-set eyes, small eyes, hooded eyes, flat noses, wide jaws, more unique hairstyles sometimes etc. I just want more creativity in the character designs. It feels like they're recycling the same template. Anybody notice this too or agree?

There’s just something about the style where sometimes it looks like a beautiful shot from a classic traditional animation film, and then other times it looks like a video game cutscene with lazily rendered lighting. It’s the inconsistency, man

the comments made me realize that no matter how much effort u put into a certain project or work, ppl will still find it hard to give appreciation to it and point out negative things they can think about

With Disney leaning so heavily into nostalgia bait these days, I foresee the possibility that in the not-so-distant future Disney might actually make the decision to create a 2d animated movie like the ones they used to do. People have a lot of nostalgia for the Disney renaissance era of films after all. It might be wishful thinking, but hey, a man can dream.

i wish they would make 2d movies again. clearly they can do it, and princess and the frog was gorgeous to look at. and there's a market for it, given that a lot of people love 2d films. there's a reason why anime has a lot of fans, given that it's one of the only place we can get 2d at all these days. disney (company) says they want to push through and make new things but now they just fall back to the safe, same-y things because it's safe and because it's disney it will generate money for them.

Oh god. I hope this “Spiderverse” comic book style doesn’t become another trend that we get sick of, just like how the 3D Pixar style was the previous trend. I want each studio to try new things, not copy each other. Spiderverse was great but I don’t want to see copies of that film, there being only one Spiderverse is what makes that movie special. I would like to see another stop-motion Disney film in the style of The Nightmare Before Christmas

I’m really exited for this film and I feel like it has a lot of potential, but seeing the trailer I had a hard time putting a finger on WHY the animation, while aesthetically pleasing, felt a little off to me. I feel like this video put it into words really well, so thank you for that! I can tell that a lot of love and hard work went into this movie, but as with all things experimental, it may take a while to perfect a new technique. I’m just happy to see Disney trying something new and I hope it’s the start of a new era for them. That being said, Wish isn’t even out yet so it’s way too early to judge it. Once it’s in theaters tho, you bet I’ll be there to check it out!🙏💕

Disney here trying to fool us and make us believe that hybrid animation is just putting black lines around the characters like? Lol, I’m so tired of their incapacity to make distinctive characters that can be recognized by their sillouette, voice, and mannerisms. All of the characters in this trailer look like someone using the Disney filter on TikTok and calling it a day.

Besides paperman, there's also Klaus. They could have gone for that feel,a 2D movie that feels 3D, instead of a 3D film that feels 2D

Disney should also make a movie in the style of Klaus.

It seems like Disney originally was going to animate this in their more usual 3D realistic style but then wanted to cash in on the cool spider verse style and decided to throw a shitty Snapchat cartoon filter over their whole movie

disappointed, I thought this was going to be fully 2d animation :( and you put it perfectly with how it feels, it just looks off. they did not do a good job at following the Spiderverse style smh

(warning; I make long comments) If they want to pay homage to a century of the company's history, I really want them to go all out. And that applies to all aspects of this film: the artstyle, animation, writing, music and score, character designs, you name it. The saddest thing here is that it seems like, ironically, there's *too much* of "the old ways" they're trying to harken to. We have what looks to be a "traditional Disney princess", but she didn't really grab my attention. The animal sidekick is inoffensive(?), but I almost scoffed when I realised they're potentially another comic relief. The premise of "a place where wishes come true" has nothing else to its description(apart from villain setup). And speaking of, he just looks like a guy with fancy clothes. None of these feel like real characters The trailer also seems to be presenting the classic "I Want" Song, except I couldn't glean off the singer's personality from it. Which would have been greatly appreciated, because the rest of the trailer did have anything in the way of characterisation either. In fact, I don't think it was introducing _any_ character, as all but one is unnamed(Valentino the goat). To me, they're all being presented as traditional fairytale roles then real people I want to root for/against. And then the writing. Obviously we don't actually know the plot yet, so I instead have a suggestion: that if they still want to have a sympathetic villain, that they go for the "understandable, but nonetheless evil" route. Villains need proper motivation that drive them to do evil. And those reasons could be understandable, but still lead them to perform terrible acts the story denounces them for. And as they seem to have a form of magic system, they can also invoke the Deconstruction of old systems being outdated, but Reconstructing and creating a new system while honouring the original intent behind the old way. Like how real world traditions and cultures adapt and change alongside the people who practice them. Plus, in a metatextual sense, it could represent Disney moving to a new era, allowing itself to evolve and grow while keeping alive the spirit of its old works. Like the video speaker, I'm cautiously optimistic, but personally leaning more to "cautious". In my eyes, they're not really selling me on the whole "a century in the making" bit, because you can't say that without incorporating those elements _equally_ . It feels too much like they're trying to do the bare minimum of "modern era" and that's a hue turn-off for me. There's takeaways from both extremes, not even considering whole exhibits' worth of nuance in-between a hundred year's worth of animation history. And I'm not one to favour picking a side unless it's a deliberate (artistic) choice that makes sense for the work.

I'm glad they're doing something different at all, visually. Some of the shots are unique. It looks like something straight out of a children's book.
