Did you see the New York Times article that came out last week: "Why Do Women Gain Belly Fat in Midlife?" (Here's a link in case you missed it: www.nytimes.co...) I'm going to save you some time and spoil the article: they don't know why women gain belly fat in midlife. Yes I'm serious, the thesis of the article is that they don't know. But as someone who works with women over 40 to help them lose weight and feel amazing, I know how to help women achieve their ideal weight, regain their health, and feel amazing again. The one thing I do agree with is that you can't exercise your way out of belly fat. And adopting a whole food plant-based diet has been shown by peer-reviewed studies and papers to reduce midsection weight in midlife.

I realize there may be many reasons for middle age belly fat, however you did not describe any possible reasons. If you are exercising and eating the same foods as your diet has been, what makes belly fat all of a sudden start i=to increase. Obviously, it is hormone changes but you did not describe this or any other reason.

Great point. As we get older, our digestive fire dims. We don't process food in the same way we did when younger. You can get away with a lot more when you are in your twenties and thirties - you likely exercise more, have a stronger digestive fire, a stronger immune system, etc. Everything can break down as we get older. We become more stressed (sandwich generation), more sedentary, and often start comfort eating (nighttime eating) and all these incremental changes can pile on the weight. Not just belly fat, but fat in areas where women tend to store fat biologically (belly, thighs, arms etc). Our modern food system and lifestyle (and stress) is not in our favor. Hopefully, that makes sense.

Our metabolism slows down as we get older. We need to stay busy and keep from sitting too much. We also need to eat more fruits and vegetables and less junk food.

@@joannmclean6406 I understand the metabolism slows with age, the exercise and diet benefits. I am asking what changes in the body are happening at a metabolic level that says to deposit fat into the waistline instead of the hips, buttocks, and thighs? What is happening that changes many of us from the traditional pear shape to the apple shape? To me, the only difference metabolically is the balance of hormones have changed with menopause. But which hormone is saying 'stop depositing fat in the lower half of the body' and 'increase fat around the middle'

​@@debbiepollard3980I agree. But I believe what we eat can influence the hormones for better or worse. And stress maintenance as well. So there are some things in control but not all

I eat chia seeds every morning that have been soaked over night. They are not ground though, How do you eat the ground seeds ? In a drink ?

You can eat them in the same way - stir them into a smoothie, cereal, oatmeal, plant-based yogurt etc.

I was in another program where it was suggested high fat, moderate protein and very low low carbs. Any thoughts on that to reduce belly fat? Intermittent Fasting is not helping at all for me😢😢😢

I have found (as have the studies) that high fat and animal protein is the worst strategy for sustainable and long-term weight loss, and particularly for losing belly fat.

Low carb didn't work at all for me, but that's only my experience. Try the advice on this channel, it worked for me. I've been wfpb since starting menopause 3 yrs ago and feel amazing! No menopause symptoms other than no cycle (which rocks). I'm 5ft6 and 128lbs and feel amazing. I encourage you to give it a try. Good luck!

It's a very serious problem for some women with visceral body fat. I have seen women ignore this, and a year later they have a massive wake-up call (heart attack, stroke, cancer, etc). I would argue that ill health is one of the biggest issues we face. Over 70% of Americans are overweight, and over 40% are obese. This is crippling the health care system and causing pain and misery in families. I would say that's a pretty "serious" problem.

As someone who lost a few family members to heart disease at an early age, I would argue that this is an issue we can't ignore. I agree though, we are capable of focusing on more than one thing. We can serve others while fueling ourselves healthily and for more years if we follow this advice. ❤
