Keep in mind that 150, 200 years ago, we weren't constantly bombarded with music (TV, movies, radio, ambient musack, and so on) the way we are today. It was not possible, as there was no recording/storage/playback technology available. You could go weeks, months or even years without hearing any type of music! Three hundred years ago, someone may have only had the opportunity to hear Beethoven's 5th ONCE in their entire lives. Yet, I can sit here and replay it over and over, whenever I want, wherever I am.

The past still had lots of music. They and/or their families just sang or played it themselves. They also had community or village festivals and shows. It doesn't need to be fancy or rich.

I think there's a reason there are so many working songs (by field workers, sailors, etc). We love being surrounded by music. And people could do that by themselves even before Johnny Inventor figured out how to record it.

People would hear music in church every weekend in most of western history. Singing and storytelling have been core aspects of human community as far back as we've had language, think folk tunes and working songs. If anything, the modern access to music at all times has resulted in a less musically-inclined society, as people become exclusively consumers without developing any performance skill of their own. Back then, if you wanted music you'd have to play, tap, whistle, sing, or hum. Nowadays you could go weeks, months, or even years without *making* any type of music.

Music is one of those weird things that you can have a craving for, but also overdo. I like to mix up my routine without music. Leave my headphones at home for my morning walk. Or turn off the radio during the commute. Mute the BS workplace pop music for a bit. If you're lucky, you'll catch that strange noise your car has been making. If you're unlucky, you'll learn how many people haven't figured out how to close their lips when chewing, cover their mouths when coughing, or breathe through their nose.

Love your stuff. I’m an old guy (graduated high school in 1974) and i find your work entertaining and informative. I studied music composition in college and have always used music to help me focus when doing a task. It feeds my brain with a stream of tangential information to help keep it from wandering as well as acting on my emotions. I will alter the style of music depending on my needs ( do i need to speed up or slow down?) Good stuff, man.

Music has been the best part of my life as a coping mechanism…..my parents had a good stereo they listened to many albums, country, classical, musicals blues, etc. Despite growing up in a trailer park music and books were my escape. One of the best jobs I ever had was working at a record store. Thankfully these days I can down load my music from my collection onto my headphones and I can listen to whatever music 24-7, at work at home, out for a walk whatever…as I tell my other music has charms to soothe the savage laurie 🙃 btw my plants like it too….

Same though for me it was more of a conscious decision, at some point I was quite interested in tracking how I spent my time and found amount of time I spent on discovering and judging music high for how little I seemed to get out of it. Also I happened to read somewhere that music tends to make you perform worse at whatever task you're doing like any multitasking tends to do.

Definitely!! I almost constantly have music running through my mind: jingles, songs, melodies, and parodies. I have "Musical Ear Syndrome" where a lot of times, I "hear" music when none is being played. I long ago learned that's just the predictive element of music and my brain. The AC is making a subtle, strange noise? My mind focuses in on the frequencies and pulls up a song with a similar note. I used to listen to music a lot when I was young, but now I find it much too distracting and jarring when my own mind is making music on its own lol

With whatever purpose you listen to music, that purpose will be increased. For instance: there will be a concert given for the poor and unfortunate, and if you go there thinking of the aim, the music will increase your compassion and generosity. This is the reason why music is used in war. And so it is with all the things that cause the excitation of the nerves. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá (Bahá'í Writings)

Plus people singing the same known song brings them together...there may be a survival strategy, such as gettkng everybody in the group on the same emotional level, maybe weeding out the undesirable for whatever reason that the song is bringing you together for....war, hunting party, religion, pub crawls, nationally known songs that bring the locals to tears. Some children with learning disabilities have rythme problems. They can be educated in most cases. It has been recognised (or at least considered) lately as instrumentational to language learning, as each language has a certain rythm to it. Thanks for the video

Actually a good point. As I former Catholic and current pagan music is a binder of people and a way induce patterns. The feeling of being uplifted or enlightened or in awe by a chant or whatever is a pretty rather universal thing. It can help through collective trauma or stroke people to action good or ill. My favorite personality are old work songs. That sense of drive is palatable and makes the mundane an adventure.

Interesting... When I am in the kitchen, either cooking a familiar dish or a new one, I need soft, instrumental music playing - its quite relaxing ESPECIALLY when trying to figure out or follow a new recipe. For the most part, though, I have a random show playing on the TV when doing house chores, I just need background noise. Your videos are great, by the way, loved the little dancing kid in this one! Onto another one....

Great video. Just stumbled upon your stuff recently. As someone with a BA in Music, I'll chime in. I don't necessarily NEED music to be playing. For me, silence can truly be golden. Not absolute silence. There's always some kind of background sound and our brains are pretty good filters of it. I've always known this, but now that I've also had my channel since 2009, I'm more "in tune" with sounds other than music since they can ruin a video. Anyway, I've always enjoyed times of "silence" throughout my life. Like right now typing this long comment. With that said, music does evoke emotional response. You're absolutely right that the right kind of music can set the mood, or entice us to donate to a charity, can make or break a scene in a movie, etc. It can be soothing in times of stress. And it doesn't have to be music that is "calming," as I have several non-musician friends that listen to heavy metal and similar to calm down. Even I've done similar. We each have styles of music to improve our mood and reduce out stress levels. It can also energize us. Get us pumped up for a workout, to do something challenging, etc. It can help pass the time and break the silence while doing tasks or driving in the car. And it can help us focus. I'll use it mostly for this in my wine studies. But I'll also use calming music when sleeping sometimes. In relation to syntax - pattern, predictable, meets expectations, we call that Music Theory. At its most basic level, a musical phrase will have a pattern (chords and melodies along with rhythm) that we've been trained through our cultures that needs a resolution. We inherently "know" that resolution and derive pleasure when it does resolve musically, therefore meeting out expectation. Composers will usually resolve the phrase in a predictable rhythmic and/or melodic pattern. i.e. in a set number of measures based on the style of music. However, sometimes they will play around with these patterns and intentionally keep the phrase unresolved for longer than expected, only to finally resolve it. It creates tension. Call it a musical tease. Or when the beat drops as the kids used to say, I guess. The most common or best example I guess would be what has been called the "Amen chord progression." It's been extremely common in church music for centuries and tends to happen when we sing "Amen." There are other similar chord progressions that result in a resolution. But like I mentioned before, we also have unresolved chords that make us uncomfortable when we hear them. They are much less common, especially in popular music of all genres. However, certain styles of music will more likely have them. Then there's improvisational music, like Jazz, that an earlier commenter mentioned. At some point a musical phrase will resolve, but we can be taken on long, meandering rhythmic and melodic journeys that can last many minutes before there's a resolution. Other forms of modern music really jack with our notion of tension and resolution with dissonance and other things. In the end, however, we grow up innately understanding when a piece of music just works. Whether it's the latest formulaic song for the masses or something more "serious." We use our musical lexicon to make sense of it. What's even better is when we broaden our exposure to music from cultures that are outside our own and learn their language, aka theory. Not unlike understanding other cultures as a whole. A couple commenters mentioned the 440 vs 432 Hz thing. The Cliff's Notes version is that until somewhat recently (like since the 18th century recent), orchestras in Western Music didn't have a standard tuning. So you could listen to a piece of music in one city and it would sound "off" in another. Eventually it was decided that 440 Hz would be "Concert A" and the rest of the notes would be evenly spaced (known as equal temperament). There are plenty of videos out there that can expertly explain this. There's also some deep conspiracy/new age rabbit holes to go down with these and other frequencies and I'll let you have fun with that. Hope that helps explain things in a more musical way. Again, great material.

I can't relate. The only times I ever listen to music while doing something is sometimes during long drives in the car, and maybe a couple of times a year while working (which is more accidental than intentional). I don't feel the need at all. I did grow up with music everywhere, but it's faded away over time. When I listen to music, it's 100% for the music itself. I don't do anything else while listening.

Great video and presentation. As a life long percussionist, I've been around or had music going most of my life. But it goes beyond playing instruments or just liking tunes. So much of what we do everyday can and is rhythmic. I'll be walking and find myself stepping to the beat, either in headphones or just in my head. I'll have beats or songs pop out of nowhere from a phrase, a sound, or any number of suggestive sources. While a lot of comfort comes from those old songs you've listened to for a long time, ie the expectations, the comfort, etc, I think there's also a base component that rhythm and flow are a time immemorial part of life. Music is an audible embodiment of it. Keep up the good work.

Speaking figuratively here, the heart is the seat of emotion, and the brain is the seat of calculation. While they can and do work back and forth, things usually work out better when the brain is in control. One way to reduce the brain's influence on behavior is to use music. That's why most video is accompanied by music, to remove a person's thinking capacity and increase the influence of emotion. The emotion will then drive the behavior. Please see, first, Jeremiah 17:9. It describes the default condition of the heart. The brain, or mind, should be used to protect the heart. Please see Proverbs 4: 7-23, especially Verse 23. People should be mindful of allowing music to influence them. There are all kinds of instances where music is used to lead people to perdition.

Bruh this is the funniest thing bc I was just thinking abt this literally a few hours ago bc I kid you not, I was listening to songs on Spotify from the Irish brigade, Elvis Presley, bo Burnham, and kind of military song things from like the us army chorus or smth, while I was practicing piano. And the worst part, is that I was practicing fantasia nr.3 by Mozart, so it's not even like I was playing music similar to the other music I was listening to. And I'm not going to lie, it was a really good practice "session" (for lack of a better word). I fixed up a lot of mistakes I kept on making lol. I was also like vibing to the other music I was listening to so it's not like I was tuning out the Spotify music, like bruh I can't tune out anything for the life of me. Music is like the law that overrules all the other laws to the point where efficient multitasking is possible

I love music but I can’t stand listening to music while I’m working. I can’t concentrate on my job if I’m listening to music. And while I’m driving I play podcasts or turn on a long KZfaq vid and listen to it.

I prefer silence and having to put up with others' noise drives me nuts.

You're dead on right. I say all the time, "No music, no work." Even beyond that, I don't care if the wheels are falling off my ride, it HAS to have tunes. My unfailing go-to for mundane tasks to relaxation to even social events? MUSIC. It takes me to good and helps me through bad. It reminds me but can distract me. I've said a million times, if it weren't for music, I wouldn't be living.

@3:58 one of the biggest reasons I got a DAP aka an Mp3 player. Phones are lame. Also becoming an audiophile now prevents me from playing music everywhere I go bc hardware. Now I end up playing KZfaq videos everywhere. Perhaps I can solve the issue by becoming a cinephile 🤔

interesting. I rarely listen to any music, which isn't to say I don't like it. I just don't go out of my way to listen to it.

I barely ever listened to music. I don't get people that have to have constant noise. Like just sit alone with your thoughts for 5 minutes people.
