Tubeless tyres have been around for a while now, especially in the MTB scene, and they're becoming more common in triathlon, too. We show you how to install them onto your bike, and answer some of the most commonly asked questions about using them.

I'm a roadie and been tubeless since 2016. I'm 66yrs old,(I live in Jersey the American one)and tubeless is way easier then tubes, zero flats since 2016 how easy is that?

This video makes it look easier than it really is, I have experienced lots of issues like: rim tape not adhering properly, leaks around the valve. The biggest issue is not every tire seats correctly. Note: not all sealants are compatible with CO2. Lastly if sealant doesn't seal a puncture, it can be a large effort to get tire off on road to insert a tube.

tips and technique to get the last 20-30% of the tire over the rim. How do you use the tire levers. We just saw you do the last bit, but I've fought for many many minutes trying to get the last little bit on the rim.

I love tubeless setup. I also think you were very lucky and made it look too easy. I've spent HOURS trying to get the last section of tyre onto the rim with lots of cuts on my hands and lots of 🤬

I have tubeless ready tyres and wheels and yet I’m still using inner tubes 😅 I just can’t seem to summon up the courage to make the switch despite all the benefits offered. Maybe one day I’ll actually do it rather than just threaten myself that I will😹

My wheels came with tubeless, and honestly it was more hassle than it's worth. It wasn't too long before I got a puncture that it couldn't seal, despite the puncture looking really small. And at that point it becomes really messy and awkward to deal with. I was really excited about the potential of tubeless, but unfortunately I just don't think the tech is there yet.

I’ve been running tubeless on my MTB for years. It’s a blessing on a big chunky tyre that gets smashed on rocks, roots and nasty stuff on the trails. On the skinny tires of a road bike I’m not so sure. I run latex inner tubes which are very light. Since my rims are not tubeless compatible that’s the best option for me anyway.

A brief tutorial on using the tubless tire plug would have been useful at the end. Otherwise great stuff. I switched over a year ago and won’t go back. The lower tire pressure is a game changer.

Yes. A toughie, hough i once saw a Campagnolo technician on a ride with us seal a hole, with a plug, in about 45 seconds, including finding the plugs! A work of art!!

Got all the kit to convert, have compatible tyres and rims. But stuck with ultralight tpu inners - as the wheels are for racing only (and being that, only used a few times a year) the sealant will need to be replaced / topped up as it will be standing for weeks not used. Or am I over thinking it?

I’m fully tubeless and haven’t looked back. I can see where I’ve had punctures and the sealant has done it’s magic without me knowing most of the time. I’ve had one puncture that the sealant couldn’t help with, and that time I just put a tube in.

I have done an Ironman 70.3 and the Escape from Alcatraz on tubeless tires. I train on them too. They work great. If your scared, just pack a tube with you, like you would have done anyway, and go ride.

@@crowlern Oh man, YES!!!!!! I put in for the lottery this year and last year and didn't get picked for either. The event is amazing and i miss it. I will enter it every year and hope I get picked. I selfishly want to tell you to skip it so I have a better shot at the second round drawing lol. Hope I see you on the S.F. Belle mate.

I’d always try and refrain from using tire levers to install a tyre - can result in puncturing the rim tap and having to start all over again or can cause rim damage especially with carbon rims!

What about storing tyres over winter does sealant set? I have nice summer wheels and swap to training wheel set for indoor winter season ( too soft to ride in rain and cold dark nights!). Can I just leave summer wheels with tubeless set up in shed for 4 months and pick up and use straight away?

my issue / thoughts also! things like a race day only disc wheel used 2-3 times a year, seems like a lot of hassle...

I have tubeless on my road bike and I love it. I haven't converted my TT wheels yet because I'm unsure about flying with tubeless. Is there anything to consider in that regard?

I would advice those safety inner lace for tubeless tyres, those prevent you from crashing if the sealant doesn’t seal the puncture

What if you don't ride outside often? I do the majority of training inside on the trainer (especially in the winter), so might go as long as 2-3 months without an outdoor ride. Will tubeless and sealant still work then?

Perhaps set the tubeless up when you return to riding outside. You're not going to see the real benefits of tubeless inside. 🤷‍♀️

Yes. NB: Whenever you fly tyres must be deflated.

Yep like a normal tyre, follow the pressure instructions on the the tyre you are fitting 🙌

Been running tubeless for the last 12 months and covered 3500km. No punctures. I’m converted. Normally would have experienced 2-3 punctures per year. Carry a tubeless repair kit and emergency CO2 canister but not needed it yet. PS: it’s ‘lose’ pressure not ‘loose’ pressure.

Tubeless tires are okay until the sealant dries and you refill with more sealant making the tire system weigh as much as a twenty dollar city tire. Don't get me started on how bad an idea hook less rims are.

There is no free lunch when it comes to tubeless. Most carbon bikes sold these days are all tubeless by default. The amount of cyclist with bikes like this not having a clue they have to maintain or what to do with a real flat is a bit frustrating when you meat them on a trail. So now you might have less flats but you also have less people who have a clue on what to do with a flat. Not sure which is better/worse.

To prove how dangerous and ridiculous these are, they even have 'hookless' tubeless rims. The cycling population will have to buy 3-D Printed Carbon Coffins and Tombstones along with insurance!

Tubeless is great, It's been adopted by many pros and can really save you from the headache of punctures. It's not for everyone but it's worth considering. Have you every tried tubeless? Hookless rims are a different kettle of fish 🙌 Thanks for the comment.

@@gtn schwalbe pro one refused to seal after a puncture, two attempts at repair were unsuccessful. A lot of time and money wasted, feeling quite bitter about tubeless on road/tt bikes.

Poor video. Any of the remotely difficult aspects of tubeless fitting are skipped over or blurred and covered with annoying music. I learned nothing from this video. Way below GTN’s usual standard.
