Peak Toyota. The mid-00s were one of Toyota's peak periods. Their cars were functional and run forever (2.4L notwithstanding). The designs were clean if unadventurous. I always liked how these looked.

Hey Zach, I have a 2005 Toyota Highlander Limited 4WD in the same color as the one you reviewed, with the 3.3L V6, and I absolutely love it, mine is modified, it has a 1.5" lift kit with some all-terrain tires, and its a blast offroad. While it ain't no 4Runner, it still is quite the capable little SUV. 158k miles and still kicking ass!

My wife and I bought one here last year. Our Chrysler minivan, hardly 7 years old started rusting and had a dreaded transmission fail on us. Basically after American cars most of my life I said enough and my wife spotted this classic in Gates Toyota lot and we took it for a spin. Absolutely beautiful condition, and has the way better 3.3 v6 too. My wife loves the fact it's old-school and seems insanely reliable. The only items we've replaced is an alternator and drive belt. Sure, I would have rather bought a Toyota Sienna because we love going camping. But so far *knock on wood* this truck has served us well. It seems well built too. Driving it encourages confidence as it's nimble and powerful. Hint ours has a 3rd row and AWD. I wouldn't claim mine was "inexpensive" however. The initial purchase price was enough for me to throw up in my mouth. But given ours has under 150k and these with very little maintenance can easily make it past 300k maybe I'll come out ahead. Something I have never been able to do with our Chryslers.

My friend had a black 2007 4-cylinder Highlander which was his first car & was very nice. Rode in it many times & it had a very smooth ride & had plenty of room in the rear seat. All the later gen Highlanders are nice, but I still like this gen the best. His parents had a white 2002 V6 Highlander which I did drive one time & was a very solid feeling vehicle.

Let’s rephrase that the 2.4 is “unreliable” but at the end of the day it’s a Toyota. So even that 2.4 is going to be better than the garbage other OEMs make.

Hey there! I have a 2001 inline 4 highlander with about 155,000 miles on it and I have to say build quality is great. The oil consumption is not that much but I do put a bit of oil between every oil change just to make sure it is to manufacturer minimums. No big engine or transmission problems for now and suspension system was just changed after 22 years. Motors from windows are giving some problems but I don’t really care about that and catalytic converter is starting to give me some issues. I have to say it is a great car and if you take care of it it will last a long time

My mom owned a Highlander of this era, it was 2WD with the limited trim and the V6 engine, she sold it in 2007 and traded it in on a brand new 2007 Yukon XL 4x2 SLT (which she is still driving 14 years later believe it or not), it has 169,000 miles on it. She sold the highlander bc me and my sister were outgrowing the booster seat/car seat, the highlander was a good car nonetheless

I was looking at old Toyota Highlanders, and they are expensive lol. Im not surprised, because these suvs are very reliable, economical and can last long. Some of these Highlanders can go for 10k if they have 100,000 miles. (Update I bought a 2008 Highlander Sport)

Driving one with a 3.3L V6 and the 5 speed automatic makes it feel like a completely different vehicle. I had a 2.4l 4 speed and it just lacked so much power and smoothness. IMO though if you have an SUV it has to have a V6.

Just picked up a 2007 4 cylinder with 163K well maintained and serviced miles from an elderly family member. I was looking for a small pickup as an extra vehicle and this seemed to be a better choice. Lot's of room! It had a very minor misfire, cleaned the spark plugs and now runs very smooth. Then detailed the engine engine bay. Swapped out the 4 yellowish halogens for LED's and that was a game changer as far a night illumination. Just received a new Curt trailer hitch and will install that this weekend. I'm also researching for tires which have a slightly more aggressive tread pattern that doesn't resonate lots of road noise. Maybe even going to a slightly taller 225/75/16 instead of the OEM 225/70/16.

@@ThewizzzleLove it. I ended up purchasing Rocky Mountains tires at America's Tires. Great tire! Other than it being a 4 cylinder, I have no complaints about this little SUV. Don't get me wrong, the 4 cyl. has plenty of pep. I just thought down the line I may want to pull a small camper but no biggie. Owning 5 series BMW's, I just love the simplicity and reliability of this little gem.

The 2.4 with the oil burning issue was first introduced in the 2007 Camry. This highlander gets the one from the 2006 Camry that doesn't have that issue.

Exactly. If you have a pre 2007 2.4l engine and it’s burning oil, it’s burning oil for a different reason.

Let's say the average age of the buyer of this car was 30 years old. That would put them being born in 1977. Those buyers would still have tons of cassette tapes and would still want to play them. Young people were not buying Toyota Highlanders.

So I have a 2007 toyota rav4 base. And wow toyota is strange. Because the two suvs are very similar. Yet the rav4 has better features. It has CD not tape deck with aux. The rear seats fold down with taps on the side of the rear. The storage in the rear is way deeper. And come with small one on top of that one. I love my rav4

I have a 2005 V6 3.4l and she zips loaded or not. The biggest difference is the steering is heavier and gotta take hard turns slower when it's full of people and camping gear, but you really don't notice much of a difference in acceleration surprisingly.

Worse motor they ever made. Had one in my Camry. They “fixed it” and then told my my crankshaft was worn, totally unrelated so not covered. Sold it for nothing with a shot engine and left the Toyota family because of their handling of it.
