I feel streetwear is at its best when it piggybacks on another element of street/urban culture (punk, hiphop, skate, motorsports, basketball etc) rather than when a brand just exists to exist.

The european market is currently flooded with so-called 'sustainable' and '100% organic' brands. None of them has a real identity besides that 'cool scandinavian look' which is basically the epitome of being boring (u'd actually just be buying basics). So yeah, I can relate to the topic. And either all of these brands fail miserably, or u folks r gonna be able to identity a european even better due to plain & ugly knitwear and cheap boots (all vegan of course!!).

Eco-friendly and ethically made. Don't forget the muted desaturated pastel colors. Not just a trend in clothes. I wanted to buy a toy for a new born baby. Everything is pastel now, colors are bad.

streetwear isn't dead, what is dead is the creativity, u don't need to create something new, u just need to make a trend, do marketing that allows your product to bee seen

na. i doubt your point. you are right. the creativity is dead. But you can not evolve only from a hype. except you do another yeezy or whatsoever. even marketing budgets have it's limits. what trend didn't we have? "Creating" trends is not easy. if you have a lucky shot, how will you sustain? His point is right. streetwear is soulless. no image, nothing to stand for, everything is kind of the same. creators tell in "about us" what crazy ideas they have. but their instafeeds, ad's, drops are replaceable. all moods are the same. they have no identity nor do they have a culture.

I feel like the oversaturation would only really be felt from a fashion insider perspective. On the street in Japan I'm constantly people seeing people wearing from new brands with different aesthetics and personalities. As long as the market supports it I enjoy seeing so many brands pop up and appealing to different niches.

The market doesn't support it though. New labels constantly fail. EVEN in Japan! Marea Erre, Hombre Nino, Doubtful as Double, the list goes on.

Most of culture exists online now whereas in the past we had Skateboarding, Punk, Raving, Hip Hop underground subcultures where people went out and actually did stuff. And so fashion was very much attached to these experiences. But now everything is so rehashed and diluted that it feels like there is no unique culture out there.

Absolutely agree and appreciate this video. Thought it was crazy for my brand to be more conceptual but this validates that starting with my why and purpose was the right way.

It seems like the only people "gatekeeping" or care about the cultural aspect of clothing are either terminally online or suburban kids with rich parents. The only place I hear about the culture and message behind clothing is in online forums like Twitter and Reddit. No-one outside could care less.

That's because most of the "culture" doesn't need to be spoken. Try making a label without a clear defined community if you want to and see EXACTLY how that goes. Wait, you've already seen it with the countless terrible brands that don the title "streetwear".

​@@THECASUALco My point was that people outside the internet who buy clothing because they like it aren't thinking about the mission statement or messaging of the company. Though there's nothing wrong with getting to know the culture behind your favorite brands, that's definitely a sentiment shared among the minority. Smaller and more local labels/brands often turn to more globalized business models because keeping your brand secluded to a designated community is often self-destructive and will lead to the collapse of that business. The globalizing and expansion past your core consumer-base doesn't necessitate the sacrifice of your mission/purpose as an apparel company either. How do you think the most successful apparel companies become so successful? The labels that are donning the "streetwear" title aren't directionless and without purpose, they are explicitly marketing to a consumer-base of people who want the "street" aesthetic without paying a premium. You can criticize that industry all you want, but it's not going away anytime soon. I dig your content and super respect your presence as a fashion outlet on KZfaq, but begging people on your decently massive platform to not pander their label as "streetwear" sounds like a massive cope.

@@basivic What you just stated was stated in the video when I mentioned Stussy, "It started as a local brand and metastasized from there." That's the whole point. Brands DON'T start global they start local and spread but the only way to do that is to have purpose. You've seen it time and time again. Brand is small, has a few followers, someone of note picks it up or its spreads further, and it hits critical mass (sometimes). I'm not begging, I'm asking people to follow EXACTLY how it was done in the past. If you watch this outlet then you know, I've worked with those very big brands that started small. It's my job and every marketing manager I've ever spoken to says the same thing "All we have to do is get our core group excited enough to talk about it". Brands don't become successful simply because of accessibility, they become successful because the RIGHT people care. If anything I'm saying focus on the right people instead of trying to portray the image you THINK will work.

​@@basivic but the thought that goes in to it gives it branding and concept that ultimately sells it, even if the casual consumer isn't thinking that deeply. in a sense the brand does the thinking for them so they don't have to.

I also hate the term “Streetwear” but there’s this 2nd life it’s taken on that makes me like the word just not in THAT way, ya know? Idk how to explain it but I like saying street fashion better than just “menswear” or “fashion”.

Im tryna start clothing brand. its streetwear high fashion about the trip back home. the story is about building home where you thrive, where you’re at your best not just where your born. cuz no place feels like home now adays. and the designs are like luxury streetwear like bape bbcicecream but with a middle eastern traditional twist. What yall think yes no any feedback

Streetwear reminds me of tattoos. An industry saturated by young ppl who dont care abt the culture and more abt notoriety, fast fashion, fast money and poppin bottles in the clubs. Sex, drugs and rock n roll paid for by cheap non creative hyped up clothing with expensive price tags that will end up on Grailed, Ebay and Posh in 6 months.

well the thing with making a lifestyle brand is that if you wear it (let's say a skatestyle brand, like thrasher) and don't skate you get absolutely shitted on for not skating. congratulations, now you are called a poser for liking the design of a piece of clothing.

Not necessarily. Stussy was a surf lifestyle brand, Supreme was a skate lifestyle brand. Things take time to spread but having that "loyal" group of initial followers are EXACTLY what you want. Despite the negatives that come with that.

A different interpretation, if there's a million brands out there, why would someone pick yours? Streetwear isn't a cohesive enough group to drive people to buy something.

The "non-counter" fashion perspective isn't one of small brands, it's of fast fashion (H&M, shein, etc), at least from the perspective of someone starting a streetwear brand. If you're not trying to do like, higher quality basics or something in that DTC kind of direction, having a perspective is key.
