Buying a PVS-7 is one of the worst NV investments you can make in 2021. Here are a few reasons why I would steer clear of investing into the -7 system. If you already own one.....this video doesnt apply, so try to not get too wrapped around the axle about it.

Nice! I don't understand why SilentSolutions hates on the PVS-7. His point about it having the none of the advantages of a mono or bino system is completely null, as it has the cheaper price tag of a mono but with none of the headaches from a mono, among other things. Not to mention parts availability. Wish I could get one.

So let me get this straight... The reasons we shouldn't is based on your own opinion of the system? But I think Uncle Sam would disagree that it is antiquated and useless.... This is what we used in Operation Desert Dust pt-1 and Desert Dust pt-2 the adventure continues, and we whooped Iraq's ass using them both times.... It's still in use today by a lot of military units all over the world... So far from antiquated and useless.... And the PVS-14 still don't give you depth perception either, so how is that better? If you need to see the lighting conditions then flip them up and back down or wear them further forward and look around them.... Any double eye piece system would have the same problem, including dual tube goggles... If you have issues aiming then get a PEQ-2... And you can get the tubes all day long on ebay... Every problem you outlined as a problem here is not really a problem at all and is fixable with common sense... Including the fragile mount.... Most of what I see is user error and lack of training and familiarity with the unit.... Mostly it isn't what one person likes so nobody should have one.... That's what I got from this video... But I find it funny your bashing the pvs7 for being from the 80s when gen-3 technology was developed in the 1980s.... You're using "antiquated technology" despite it being the newest $8,000+ unit with upgraded housing and fancier decals.... It's all the same crap that's just assembled differently and hyped up as "new tech" to get fools to shell out ungodly amounts of money.... But in the end, just because someone swears by it doesn't mean you won't swear at it.... It does no good to get a new over priced unit that is all the rage now but will be "antiquated" in 10-15 years if you can't use it correctly or at all.... Get what works best for you....

I have 4 AN/PVS 7's and 2 AN/PVS 14'S. The PVS 7's have a more rugged housing and Delta image tubes. I ran over my PVS 7 with a jeep one night gunning hogs across the pasture and it just got a couple of scuffs on the body. The PVS 7's are more comfortable for me to use and I don't get the headaches like a ice-pick in my eye like with the PVS 14'S. Yeah the PVS 7's have been around since 1982 and the DOD has spent hundreds of millions on upgrades over the past 40 years. Some people claim neck strain and that is why you slap a Mohawk on your helmet to counterbalance and upgrade your pads. I have 4 more 3rd Gen image tubes for the PVS 7's and complete shell kits are $800. When I need to see at night I leave the PVS-14's at the house. I might buy a bridge for the PVS-14's but I'm not in a hurry for it. Head to head the PVS-14's and PVS 7's have the same image intensifier tube performance and battery life. There is a reason why the DOD does not agree with you about the PVS 7's. Plus best of all there are 40 years of PVS 7 parts out there unlike the PVS-14 which has been a bitch to get parts for over the past 2 years.

Only reason why the pvs-14 was adopted was to provide a cheap form of passive night aiming when used inline with the m68 cco for the average infantryman who wasn't issued a dedicated weapon night sight. Even after the pvs-14 was adopted, the pvs-7 continued to be issued to vehicle crews and personnel already issued a weapon night sight. Why someone would choose a comparable pvs-14 over a pvs-7 is beyond me. Even once you spend enough money to make a 14 outperform a 7, youve put yourself in the price range of a good set of true bino NVGs. Can we please finally collectively leave the monocular NVD concept in the early 2000s where it belongs?

3 reasons why I chose a PVS-7 in 2023: I have had extensive experience with the pvs-14 in my army days. My brother owns dual-tubes as well as a wp pvs-14, so to round out the collection we needed a pvs-7. The price of my gen3 pvs-7 was less than the price of gen2 pvs-14. Not used- there isnt a scratch on the device. I like the "tactical taliban" or "gulf war cyclops" look. But the biggest reason why you may choose a pvs-7 is because this is America where NVGs are legal and you dont need to explain yourself to anyone as to why you chose one device over another. Are pvs-7s worse than other devices? Yes. Objectively worse. Are pvs-7s useless? Not even a little bit. They work great. They arent "just as good" but they still work great. It's like someone busting your balls for buying a Nissan Rogue over a Ford Explorer. One might do it's job better. But at the end of the day, they will both get the job done, and it sure as hell beats walking.

I have both dual 14s and 7D. 7 is way better than single 14 any night when it comes to dept perception and dual 14s is better than 7. 7 does gives you a headache if you look for side to side peripheral without moving your head as long as you stop looking for peripheral vision the headache stops. It's a habit.
@DaveSmith-cp5kj
@DaveSmith-cp5kj 2 жыл бұрын
@@bolshoibooze8010 The 7 actually doesn't give you depth perception at all. Both eyes are seeing the exact same image. In truth, binos don't give you depth perception either, it is somewhat of a misnomer because our ability to judge distances is largely determined by the intersection of each eye's sight. With night vision both eyes are looking straight ahead, so we can't actually determine distance any better than we could on a video or a picture. The main benefit of the 7 and the binos is that you see green (or white) in both eyes than lit on one eye and dark on another. This may cause you to have eye dominance in one eye that you may not want (this is the same reason why both eyes open shooting is not always a good thing, especially if you aren't using an illuminated reticle or a high contrast sight picture such as looking through a scope at a bright sandy terrain). That said, just as you can train for eye dominance, you can train to use the 14 as easily as the 7. In my own experience, it takes people about a month straight (~40 total hours) to really have good mental control over the image, which of course is a major time sink that most people don't have available to them.

Just got a gen 3 PVS 7. I had a cheap digital head mounted one before. Which has the same single image for 2 eyes. Got pretty used to it. But ranged was limited, and it had very low resolution and had an IR illumnator. I tried using it only one eyed. Mimicking a monocular. It was pretty uncomfortable. Considering the cheapest PVS 14 style optic was a gen 2 for 1600. I decided a surplus gen 3 thin film autogated PVS 7 for 1300 was a better choice. PVS14 of same spec would be atleast 1000 more. And 1300 was already greatly stretching my budget.
@Nathan-jh1ho
@Nathan-jh1ho 3 жыл бұрын
UPDATE I walked around with the PVS7 for few hours and held it tilted, to mimic a monocular for ~30 min. The ability to see with one normal eye is pretty good in places with streetlights around, like a suburban area. I can "switch" eyes to see, and when there's enough light, I can see with both images which get fused together by your brain. It wasn't as uncomfortable as I thought it is, relative to viewing with both eyes. Didn't get migraines or anything, but I felt some eye strain after 30 min. Slight fatigue would also happen from using it normally. Although in complete darkness monocular wasn't better, and eye strain was worse. With the PVS7 it just feels better, it's like you can mentally focus more. But you do lose awareness of ambient lighting. I found I just had to be aware of how many light sources are around. For depth perception, it's not that bad. The ocular distance is just one of many ways we perceive depth. I had no problems running up to cover. I didn't try stairs though. I'm not an "operator". So I don't really intend to use this device in urban/suburban areas with streetlights. I'd prefer to use flashlights. In complete darkness, where I intend to use this, I think the PVS 7 is better, especially for a long time. Though factoring in compactness, weight, ability to aim, and theoretical durability (moving parts) I think I actually slightly prefer a PVS14. BUT when factored in cost it's no brainer for me to choose PVS 7 over PVS 14 The cheapest Gen 3 PVS 14 is $2800, which is more than doubled $1500 more. Don't even know if it's at the level of Omni VII. I'm already stretching my budget greatly. Also, I have no plans to upgrade anything.

Interesting take, where most of your points are wrong lol. 1- yes it’s 2021(4 now), when I was in Iraq in 2006-08 we used M2 50’s on our trucks that were made in WW2. Age doesn’t inherently make something bad or outdated. 2- I don’t think most people care about swapping out tubes. Never crossed my mind. My Tacoma’s engine is proprietary, doesn’t bother me because I wouldn’t swap it out. 3- yes, a biocular isn’t a monocular or binocular. Plenty of other things it isn’t too. 4- most valid point you have, not sure it’s a deal breaker level issue for most. 5- I picked mine up for $1200 used. There’s nothing of this quality level for anywhere near that price. If you have a bigger budget then sure buy better, but not everyone can afford or needs to buy a new Ferrari. Doesn’t mean they don’t deserve to drive.
@atacorion
@atacorion 3 ай бұрын
Couple of counterpoints to your argument There isn't an M3 HMG that makes the M2 obsolete, so you're stuck with the M2, there are a lot of PVS systems that have made the -7 obsolete. You were issued the gear you used, this is for folks buying into NV, so you missed one of the points I was trying to make entirely. Its not about swapping tubes into a -7, its about swapping the tube into a newer better more modern housing which a lot of people do with 11769 and 10160 tubes these days. Again you missed the point because you probably don't have as much understanding about NV as I do, based on working in and around this industry for a decade now. Your Tacoma's engine is the same engine as the 4runner and some models of the Camry. Again, I am speaking about buying a new PVS-7 not a new one but for $500-1000 more than what you paid, you're in PVS-14 territory and the -14 absolutely destroys the -7 in every way. Given the small price difference save up more money for a little while longer. IF you like the -7 keep the -7, but the people I see with -7's after only a 2-night NV class offload their -7's shortly thereafter. People who use their gear understand this, people who were issued and used it 20 years ago and don't know any better don't. The -7 is the 1911 of NV.
@BamaPewPew
@BamaPewPew 3 ай бұрын
@@atacorion lol I carry a 1911 at times too. I’m not going to re say each point, but to be pedantic there’s no Camry with a 4.0 V-6. You say $1k more as if that isn’t TWICE the cost. The average user isn’t changing their tubes into new housings, or kicking in doors for that matter. I suppose you’d rather people have nothing, but there’s value in the PVS-7. So long as they still turn on they always will have value, btw I could care less if you have ten years of experience, any argument to authority is a weak argument. “I’ve been doing this for years” means I should be quiet because the pro is talking, which is for people like Fauci, not the 2a community. There’s a huge market for people who don’t want to spend used car money on, let’s be real here, a toy they will never actually need.

The 7 isn't terrible, practically speaking I don't think you will be bad off if you can find a gen 3 7 for $1,500k or less, which are out there, you just have to scour the net daily for about a month or two. One of the best "proving grounds" that are accessible to a civilian are milsim events. Lots of people still using 7 and they can still regularly spot and take out dual tube users. The 7 is just not a good purchase if you plan to buy one device to be the end all be all. The 14 is nice because it is kind of modular as you can buy one now, and buy another later to have duals which you can split with a buddy if necessary. A lot of 7s are overpriced and so comparing a $2,500 7 that you might find on optics planet doesn't make a whole lot of sense when Ebay 14s are $2k, and TNVC sells really great ones for 3K. If you aren't planning to actually fight IRL with them (like you aren't making a decision for a rapid response LE group like SWAT or something), go for the 7 if you like the charm of it. If in some wild emergency you end up needing to seriously use your 7, you aren't going to be that far behind anyone else. Just having any gen 3 NVD setup is like 90% of the advantage. The rest comes down to training, your tactical knowledge, and the strategy applied to the situation. A game example is a milsim event I took my friend to last year involved him staying behind with other people who didn't have night vision to hold our campground while I and other users went off to hunt other players. The opposition night vision team pimped out with dual tubes came to wipe him out, but rather than splitting their team into two elements, they approached from a single direction and just assumed they were in shadows, and so my friend who only had a flashlight was able to see them coming and mowed them all down before they could react. Night vision is a major advantage, but like anything, the returns on investment taper off past a certain point, and it won't guarantee success in your endeavors just because you buy what everyone else has. So don't think just because you have a 7 that you have a game breaking disadvantage. It's workable, it's just not the best bang for your buck if you can afford better and care only about pragmatics, not just fun.

@@DaveSmith-cp5kj thank you for your answer, well i must say i talked to other nvg owners and they recommended the pvs7 to me, i also tried a binocular and honestly the only difference i noticed it was the perception of depth, unfortunately for me that I live in Italy it is almost impossible to find a pvs7 in good condition for so little, third generation binoculars cost a lot and I don't like monoculars, so even after trying a biocular like the pvs7 I definitely decided to re-evaluate it and buy one and then mount it on norotos facemask.Unfortunately my team plays very little at night but I want it out of pure nvg passion and I will use it at night for walks in the mountains and countryside.
