This probably has no basis in any real physics, but I feel like delaying the flick works because the board becomes more and more “weightless” when it nears the peak of it’s upwards momentum (or maybe it's losing it's upward momentum?), making it easier to flip. At the same time, the flick needs to come up with the board rather than kicking into it against it's upward momentum - that’s why the best kickflips seem to flip upwards into the feet instead of barrel rolling down towards the ground. So basically delay the flick, but make sure you are still flicking on the way up. Also, one thing that helps my technique/form is to think bout the relative position between my knee and foot. I try to slide up with my knee ahead of my foot as I go up, and then swing the foot out past the knee like a pendulum during the flick.

I think that would be correct in terms of physics, the board has most momentum close to the ground and slows down as it it gets closer to it's peak height then accelerates down. If your timing is good and you flick at the peak it would definitely be more weightless at that point

Thank you for this. Definitely need to work on not flicking down on my kickflip. I got good timing and that little delay. It’s just that I flick down. Definitely post again when I got it 💪🏼

Elastic exercise band between both feet is good to work on flick. I struggle to get my flips higher as when I wait longer between pop and before I flip, I then find flips go too fast and I get one and half or one and primo
@mstunameow
@mstunameow Жыл бұрын
I have opposite problem, the higher I pop/longer I wait, the harder it is to fully flip the board before the tail hits my back foot. The pop height feels so satisfying but then I just half-flip..more fine tuning timing vs flip speed needed I guess

I learned 2 years ago, that my bad flick was because of my shoes, I was skating nike blazers back then, good flick only lasted for like 1 week of skating and after that i couldn't even kickflip properly. Switched to adidas superstars and my flick has never been gone after that.

Na I disagree I feel like blazers have some of the best flick there is . Superstars are good tho if your just starting out with kickflips because of the toe

Great content topic and breakdown, yo! I'm looking forward to see your suggested exercises. I'm in the gym quite a lot as I've been recovering from ACL reconstruction. Banded, sideways crab walks is my go-to at this time for flick. Flick is initiated from the hips, so the area around the hips has to be strong, mobile, and responsive.

Super useful video i was actually looking for this topic on your channel not so long ago and here it is :). I have a question though. I feel like my "fast flicking ability" is always decreasing depending on how many sessions I have in a row. If I haven't been skating for like 3 days and jump on my board again, my flick is going to feel fast precise and effortless and i'll be able to flip into stuff. But if I skate like let's say 5 days a week ( 3 days on the board, one day resting and 2 days on the board again), the fifth day is going to be terrible when it comes to flip tricks. I will still be able to do them but the flick will feel feeble and unprecise and my ankles stiff. As a result my flip tricks are going to feel less reliable and I'll lose confidence over them. The weird part is that i'll still be able to do the rest of my skating fine so it doesn't seem to be related to my general fatigue. Have you ever had this issue ? Is there anything I could do for that to regenerate faster in between sessions? Sometimes I'm so stoked on skating a lot that I don't wan't to chill for days just so it can recover :D Have a good one and thanks for your content.

Nyjahs kickflip is exactly how I setup for my switch flip. More or so the way Shane Oniel setups for switch flip.
@mstunameow

I have to very self-consciously focus on pop and flick speed before I actually do it or I just get sloppy dinky flips, I guess the muscle memory just isn't fully there yet. Especially have to focus on being like robot fast with the flick, and not just the flick out, but moving the flick foot back over the board. Like a frog's tongue

Only been skating for 2 years but I have learnt so much. The snap of the tail seems to be the deciding factor on how good my flick is for any trick, in fact I think it’s the deciding factor in so many scenarios, building that pressure in the skateboard. A crisp deck and fresh legs are key for me but that’s not always the case 😂
@TheDailyPush

Yeh man, creating pressure/tension in the board is key for so many tricks. Every time I put on a new board I skate so much better and always think fackkk why didn't I do this before

I know why, it's getting new decks with new grippy griptape every week and getting new shoes every month or so. I here skate the same deck and shoes for 2 years with hot glue, duct tape, patches, and super glue on my shoes to keep them skateable. My griptape is never black or shiny, it's always dusty. And it gets silicone inside the griptape itself so my griptape is never grippy. Skateboarding is a huge money sink, and I cannot afford it. I just bought an entire full setup, and my shoes are fucked after 2 months. Honestly if you don't have a lot of cash laying around, don't expect to get good skating. Because you will keep needing to buy new stuff. I am considering to quit skateboarding atm. I had landed kickflips before like 8 years ago, but I never unlocked them because it always rips my shoes in a day. I unlocked kickflips with my new setup, and can even consistantly do one footed varial, hard and treflips, but I always feel like I need newer equipment and it is very frusterating.

In 10 years I have only had 6 decks, and I used them untill they had 0.00001% pop left with crazy razor tail. I could still ollie a traffic cone, but I would struggle. I even stopped skating rough street spots to prevent my deck chipping and razor tailing. I only skate tennis courts or basket courts with slick ground.

Doesnt seem like you’re very passionate about skating. I would just quit If I was you because everyone knows decks cost money but the fun and enjoyment is what makes it worth it to the people who actually enjoy it.

@@MuzluPattes16 where do you live because skating only cost me like $35 a month average. Get bigger wheels, meatier trucks, don’t replace bearings as often, decks are the only part that need constant replacements every 2-3 months, make sure you skate both kicks too. Buying a new complete wouldnt be the best financial move if your old board still had wheels and bearings that roll, and trucks that grind, bushings are cheaper to replace if the trucks just didnt turn as well anymore.

Someone else also left a similar comment. I actually didn't want it to be 2 videos but ended up being so much longer when I filmed it, so felt like people would have got bored with a super long one and preferred 2. Would you have preferred one longer video?

Haha ohhh if only a 10 min vid gave me a decent amount of ad revenue. For the record though, with vids longer than 8 mins you have the option of mid-video ads which I always turn off.
