If you enjoy Tai Chi partner practice, you have probably had the experience of enjoying how to stay relaxed and using your Tai Chi to redirect forces or move someone effortlessly. And you may also have experienced where when someone resists in certain ways, you encounter much more difficulty.
What could be causing this difficulty? It can initially seem like it's just the magnitude of their force, and perhaps more skill will help you overcome it. Often times though, it's not the strength of their force, but how the psychological pressure of that makes you tense up and abandon the essential tenets of your Tai Chi practice!
So what is the key to maintaining your intention and awareness that is completely aligned with your Tai Chi practice, and how does this help you to overcome any strength and resistance that you might encounter? Let's explore it in this video!

This is great. I've been waiting for someone to explain how it actually works. I practice Yin Bagua and we use the fascia in a different way, but it's interesting that both arts rely on fascia.

Very cool about your Bagua practice and fascia! One reason fascia is important is because it is the physical structure that connects the whole body together, as well as where much of our energy meridians reside. And that means when used well, it is capable of so much, is it not? Welcome and thanks for your comment!

After you allow his tension on you to flow over your body (fascia), it appears you use muscle to move him away. Sometimes it is hard to tell watching a video. At the moment you touch do you create a bridge between you, a connection? With this connection, open joints and fascia energized you could move him with intent yes? I am still a beginner in all of this. Thanks again for doing these videos.

Wow this is a great comment and observation. Yes for the sake of illustrating the importance and effect of using Yi to guide this tension over my body surface, I am purposely NOT using any Qi or offensive Yi when I move him. This is to show how vulnerable their balance is to even just muscle force once you apply your Yi and Kao. And you would be right to think that once you master this, in real usage you would follow it up not with just muscle force, but with intent and Qi quality control through the connection you have established. You say you're a beginner in this but you see through my demo to where the future can take you and that's wonderful. It shows you have a good intuition and a perspective that see beyond the immediate and obvious. 😃

So pretty much any pressure you receive you redirect it to your elbow with your yi?
@phoenixmountaintaichi
@phoenixmountaintaichi 18 күн бұрын
Yes you direct it to your outer surface, can be your elbow or your back or any other part on the outside of your body. The elbow is useful to focus on because it has a close relation to activating your Yi.
